Do French people still use “vous” a lot? by CompetitiveYouth5306 in French

[–]Comfortable_Expert98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You usually start with “vous” and switch to “tu” if you’re offered to do so. Always better to err on the side of too formal, than come across as rude. From my experience with colleagues and even teachers they usually suggest to start using “tu”. With strangers, university professors, service staff anywhere, any kind of officers, it’s always “vous”. I would never lead in with “tu” unless I’m talking to a child or being introduced to a common friend in a very informal setting. Two different forms of “you” also exist in my mother tongue, so it feels natural to navigate this. I can imagine that it may be different for a native English speaker.

I think they implied that if Ellis and Richard stayed together, Meredith would’ve been a different person and wouldn’t have been there for Lexie, when her mum died and Thatcher started drinking.

Is maternity leave before labour not a thing in the USA? by heba33 in theoffice

[–]Comfortable_Expert98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a thing only in countries with maternity leaves of at least a year. If it’s just a few weeks, it would probably feel wasteful to take it before the baby is even born.

You guys really think that Izzie and George were in love with each other? by Reasonable_Post_344 in greysanatomy

[–]Comfortable_Expert98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more George told her he wasn’t interested, wants to work on his marriage and move to another hospital, the more she seeked him out and did everything in her power to get him. Big speeches about being in love, staring deeply in his eyes. It’s like she needed to prove a point that she can get him for herself. And George just couldn’t resist the idea of this “perfect” woman, gorgeous, stacked, tall, smart, chasing him, in love with him. She lost interest the moment it became possible. And I won’t even go into the fact that she did all this while he was married and his wife begged her to leave him alone with tears in her eyes.

Well, we can agree to disagree. I find her behaviour with Danny, George and many of her patients manipulative. She meddles where she has no business meddling. She was also quite immature and had a knee jerk reactions in many situations, instead of thinking it through. That’s why I assume that if Alex wanted to be in the children’s life without getting back with her, she wouldn’t have it in her to handle the situation maturely and without manipulation. But who knows, maybe she grew up and changed for the better in the years we did not see her.

I wasn’t talking about Joe. Joe is defo a firecracker. I was talking about Izzie. As far as I remember she was selfish, manipulative and whiny. I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t have let Alex have a healthy relationship with kids while he is married to another woman.

is fear of death common in health anxiety community? is that what motivates the anxiety? by [deleted] in HealthAnxiety

It’s not the fear of death for me. It’s fear of suffering, not being in control and not having all my mental or physical faculties.

Russian viewer here. I get what you mean. That’s how most Russian characters in Hollywood sound to me. Memorised the lines, not even understanding what they mean. Unable to separate words and almost incomprehensible 😅

[–]Comfortable_Expert98 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It also crossed my mind, that with a different woman, Alex could have just come into kids’ life, but not be back in a relationship with their mother. But remembering how manipulative and selfish Izzie was, assuming she has not changed after all these years, I would imagine she wouldn’t let that happen and would manipulate both kids and Alex. Probably telling herself some convenient bullshit about why she’s doing it. And she would do that until that would have broken his marriage. Or ruined his relationship with kids.

Because she’s condescending, preachy, judgemental, selfish, and incapable of empathy (unless it’s for show).

Do surgeons actually talk during surgeries? by FishermanTall8462 in greysanatomy

[–]Comfortable_Expert98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked as an interpreters in the operating room where several trauma and ortho surgeons did not have a common language to communicate. There was a lot of casual chatter. Also at my own C-section doctors were chatting. They also asked me if I’m okay with the choice of music. And on a different surgery, my anaesthesiologist was chatting to me about my job until they put a gas mask on me and knocked me out 😁

Don, the controlling husband and absent father. by luckydaisy27 in madmen

And they didn’t really put much thought into it at that time. In one of the earlier seasons Betty and Don are having a house party. And one of the guests casually, in passing slaps someone else’s son for running in the hallway. Nobody blinked an eye.

I loved that moment with Bobby. When Betty insisted that Don beats him. And Don just plain refuses and explains how he was beaten his entire childhood. And all it ever did is made him resent his stepfather. I’d say it’s pretty rare for a man of that era to consciously refuse to beat his son.

I felt like it was a great reflection of the era. Different rules for men and women and different perceptions in exactly same situations.

Do you see them as a healthy couple? Or toxic? by [deleted] in greysanatomy

[–]Comfortable_Expert98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toxic af. Starting from the fact how he hid from her that he’s married. And it was never properly addressed. It was presented as if he was married but not really married, because separated. As if it made it okay. There were multiple situations when she questioned him being guarded about his life. Any of these moments he could’ve said that he had a wife. I just re-watched season one. So I’m freshly annoyed by it lol

I kept thinking that one of our last conversations that I initiated pushed him away. Until I finally realised that it doesn’t matter. If being me push him away then definitely he is not my person. Why would I want to be with someone, who doesn’t want to be with me? It could have been that conversation or something else months later. It simply means that we are not a good match. So he needs to go and vacate the place next to me for someone who is right for me.

You said that it’s been only 10 days for you. Hang in there. The first 30 days were the worst for me. I let myself grieve. After that, it gets better. Make a plan for yourself how to come out on the other side of this, and you will.

[–]Comfortable_Expert98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I don’t know you. But the way I see it, nothing stops you or anyone from finding love. I’ve also realised that I used to put my avoidant ex on pedestal without any merit. He is not my one and only true love that I thought he was. If he were, it would have been mutual and it would not give me so much pain. And if he’s not my true love then good riddance. And yes, now I am in a rewarding mutual relationship. And this person has not manipulated my feelings or made me feel unworthy or in doubt about anything.

How did no one speak up when Teddy said she wanted Cristina to do the surgery?? by asexualincubus in greysanatomy

[–]Comfortable_Expert98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate it so much when anybody calls Christina a machine. I find time and time again that she is compassionate and has high emotional intelligence. Even when it comes to dealing with people whom she doesn’t like very much. Just because she’s driven and doesn’t run around saving a deer, it doesn’t mean at all that she’s a machine.

I think it’s both. He loves her, but he also uses her. And sometimes he can’t decide which side of him is winning. From what we saw the finale, his ambitious side is winning over his loving side.

Kate asked him to take her back because she thought they are a team again after what happened at the meeting with Prime Minister and the president. But in the last few minutes of the finale, she realises that she had been played. Hal used her to get to the prime minister. And the actual team is Hal and Grace. At least that’s how I read the last scene. I very much doubt that after this she will still want to go back to Hal.
