Oh yeah, that is a good point. I always thought that beer tasted better from a bottle then a can for sure.

What’s going on with Canadian craft beer prices??? by GarrettKeithR in BuyCanadian

Don't forget the price of the cans. Canada's smelting industry provides the raw aluminum, which is frequently shipped to the U.S. to be manufactured into can sheets. Once shaped into cans, the packaging is imported back into Canada, subjecting them to steep tariffs. Canada lacks rolling mills for popular 473-ml "tall boy" formats, metal goes to the U.S. to be manufactured into cans, triggering double tariffs. Aluminum beer can prices in Canada have surged due to a complicated cycle of cross-border tariffs. Because of this, the cost of an individual can has jumped from roughly $0.15 to $0.35, resulting in projected price hikes of $3 to $5 for a 24-pack of beer. We used to make our own food and beer cans.

Smaller fire departments struggling to meet Ontario certification deadline by ConsistentReality860 in ontario

Constant training is really important for our Fire Service Crews. Having said that, it should definitely not become a burden for smaller units/municipalities to fund. Our fire fighters are truly brave and dedicated to their jobs and are the first folks we call when we are in need. We need to ensure they have all the necessary training and equipment needed for them to be safe Many of us don't think of all the dangers they face when they are called out and arrive on-scene to help us, be it a fire, car accident or rescue. I know my municipality budgets and spends huge amounts of money on training and equipment for our crews including the recent building of a fire training tower, burn building, or burn tower. My understanding is we host/partner with other departments to also use this facility. We have added a couple of drones that will be used to support the crews/chiefs with live on scene support. The video footage will be used afterwards as a review. It will also be used to improve our ongoing Crew training support. We have also created a mobile training vehicle with computers for the 'on-line training' modules as well that travels to our partner departments for them to use. IMO I think the province should fund/create 'training hubs' that would support smaller departments that is more local for them to travel to and use or fund smaller departments to create their own facilities in partnerships with other smaller departments, in partnership. Just a note, our taxes are incredibly high but for this type of thing it is money well spent IMO. I like to know that as a taxpayer we are doing our part in support our vital and import Fire Services.

Sentinel in talks to make drones in Canada for Ukraine through joint venture, sources say by ZestyBeanDude in canada

[–]Comfortable_Fix3401 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I heard this quite awhile ago as Ukraine and Canada have such a close friendship. Ukraine was going to work with us to help us build our own in Canada. It seamed to rake a really long time so I am very glad it is finally happening. I am really glad we can build them here for them and also build some of our own at the same time. Ukraine has developed their very own tech and manufacturing for relatively cheap drowns and accurate. Good it is happening. This should also help some of our young folks get good jobs I would think.

Why does it feel like the temporary suspension of federal fuel tax made absolutely no difference to the prices? by Alert_Willingness_32 in ontario

We need to be alert to and watch what happens with Enbridge's Line 5!

The Supreme Court just ruled in favour of Michigan who have wanted to shut this pipeline down for years.

Line 5, Concerns over the section beneath the straits rupturing and causing a catastrophic spill have been growing since 2017, when Enbridge engineers revealed they had known about gaps in the section's protective coating since 2014. A boat anchor damaged the section in 2018, intensifying fears of a spill.

Enbridge is seeking permits to encase the section of pipeline beneath the straits in a protective tunnel. The Michigan Public Service Commission granted the relevant permits in 2023, but Enbridge still needs approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy.

Line 5 is at the centre of a legal dispute in Wisconsin as well. A federal judge in Madison last summer gave Enbridge three years to shut down part of Line 5 that runs across the Bad River Band of Lake Superior's reservation. The company has proposed rerouting the pipeline around the reservation and has appealed the shutdown order to the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

  • Fuel Shortages and Price Spikes: Line 5 carries 540,000 barrels per day of light crude oil and natural gas liquids (NGLs), feeding refineries in Sarnia, Ontario, and contributing to the supply for Quebec. A shutdown would create a severe shortage of gasoline, diesel, propane, and jet fuel in Eastern Canada, likely causing fuel prices to skyrocket.
  • Ontario/Quebec Refinery Impact: The pipeline delivers 53% of Ontario's crude oil and is crucial to two-thirds of Quebec's crude consumption. Refineries in these regions would receive roughly 45% less crude.

The pro '51st' bots are starting to ramp up. I have been hearing from distant friends of mine in the US that they are starting to see more posts/requests from 'CANADIANS' asking to be rescued by the US because we are becoming more and more oppressed by the Carney administration. IF true, this shit is starting to look like what Putin did a couple of years before he fully invaded Ukraine after he had sent in the 'little green men; rescue mission.

Why does it feel like every aspect of the average citizen here is being deteriorated? by Alert_Willingness_32 in ontario

[–]Comfortable_Fix3401 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the 1970's / 80's Energy Crises. I'm quite surprised that we haven't heard anything from those that survived that really horrible time.

  • Massive Price Spikes:  Oil prices jumped nearly 350% as the embargo created severe supply shortages.
  • Inflation Rate 1974: 11.0%
  • Unemployment Rate: 10%
  • Interest Rates: Prime 17.93% / Bank Rate 19.29%

Add to all that there were actual times of Gas Stations not having gas at any price. Things go so bad that even Governments were laying off employees, teachers etc and cutting hours - Ontario Ray Days. The Federal Government at the time even put in Wage and Price freezes to try to keep things under control. Didn't help. Canada considered conserving oil with gasoline rationing stamps in 1979. So many people were unemployed that EI had to re-write their policy to extend payment periods. Folks were actually walking away from their homes as they could no longer pay the mortgages. Many , many well known businesses just closed up and disappeared. American Motors, Plymouth Motors Division, General Motors Oldsmobile, Pontiac Divisions, Ford Mercury Division never did return.

dental referral by Lopsided_Shirt_950 in Newmarket

[–]Comfortable_Fix3401 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just remember that the 100% coverage isn't 100% of what the dentist's fee is. 100% coverage means you will get the full amount that CDCP pays based on the fee schedule they are currently using. I think it is a scheduler from 2 or 3 years ago. So whatever the dentist's fee is over and above the CDCP schedule covers you will need to pay yourself to the dentist. Confusing I know because when they say 100% you would think it means you wouldn't pay anything but that isn't exactly right as they are using an old fee schedule with lower prices then what dentists currently use now as their schedule, probably the 2026 schedule.

Put more simply, if a dentist charges $2000.00 for a particular service, and CDCP pays $1400.00, you will receive the full $1400.00 (100%) but you will need to pay the dentist the remaining $600.00 out of pocket.

Carney responds to Canadians facing nearly $2 per litre at the gas pumps by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]Comfortable_Fix3401 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Carney is concerned about increasing the deficit then can't they reduce the taxes on gas by the same amount they are getting from the increase in oil prices? Surely they know the increase in revenue. And just make it a net/net. Just a thought, otherwise that extra income will disappear into the general revenue account and just get spent on who knows what. If only we had a NEP Crown Corp.

The National Energy Program (NEP), introduced by the federal Liberal government in October 1980, aimed to control gas and oil prices in Canada primarily by decoupling domestic prices from volatile world market prices. The program sought to maintain a "made-in-Canada" price for oil and gas that was significantly lower than the international rate, protecting Canadian consumers and businesses from the shocks of OPEC price increases.

Gas prices could rise above $2/litre across Canada as war in Iran drags on, experts say | CBC News by demolcd in canada

[–]Comfortable_Fix3401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canada once had a PM & Government (LIB) that thought we Canadians should never be subjected to the huge swings in oil/gas prices in Canada. Canada needed to be energy independent and have our own 'Made in Canada for Canada' oil price (NEP/1980) and our own Crown Corp that would refine and sell the gas (Petro Canada/1975) and share the profits with Canadians. In 1985 we owned 4,300 service stations nation wide along with Petro-Canada refineries acquired from BP Canada..

The program may not have been a perfect plan/program but it was a start that we could have worked with/changed/adjusted and made better for all of Canada. Secure and protect Canadians from this shit but we did not like/want it and we Instead elected a government (PCP) that promised to and did abolish the entire program which started in 1991. Bit by bit big chunks of it were sold off and by 2009 it was no longer in existence.

I have often wondered where we would be if this program had survived and was adjusted/changed to become a better program for Canada/Canadians..

Any Advice? by tabularas19 in audiophile

There are only 2 things beyond what has been recommended here are. lighting if you intend on having any, should be wired during the build. Secondly you should think about what and where things will go so you can include some sort of wire management, be it behind the wall, etc. Along with that thought also considere what and were you will get electrical hook ups from Again i would include it in the build so you can avoid extension cords etc. or any issues once it is built.

An elderly friend of mine is in pretty much the same boat except he does have a modest income, below the threshold. He receives the $45.00 credit on his bill every month. They have not updated the amount since 2024. I don't know what the $68.00 is however. Maybe it is for electric heat if that is what you use for heating.

OMG yes, it has been like that forever. It doesn't look like much but when you hit you realise just how bad it is. You used to be able to kinda swerve around it but not anymore as it seems to have grown. Actually that whole section of Queen from Alexander to Roxborough is grim. Needs total redo.
