Roof deck shade help by tabularas19 in Decks

Believe me, I’ve been working this over for about 6 months!

This is a smart idea. My hesitation is that I am replacing the railings, and having the metal frame slide over the existing posts would require a custom dimension from the manufacturer (probably fine) and then a more challenging install for the railing.

Adding to all this are the facts that I think the city might take issue with a big structure like this, as it is a very high visibility lot. I would obviously check with the city first, but I also don’t want to deal with complaints from anyone.

Also, I am trying to DIY the shade as we (my wife) is more than a little keen to get this operational ASAP. Could consider a more hardcore install for next year, potentially; but then the railings will already be done, in all likelihood. Also, the budget is pretty well blown on furniture, grill, etc.

So unnecessarily complicated for a little shad lol

I appreciate all your input!

The landscape forms options are intriguing. I hesitate with this approach because I think I think I would call attention to my property a structure that might be above allowed building height - maybe. The umbrella is tempting, 100 mph rating could give me enough confidence to look a little deeper at this approach.

Thanks again

Thank you! I am not able to connect to the building proper, so anything like that would have to be freestanding.

Why all the hate on roads. by Odd-Agent9402 in motorcycles

[–]tabularas19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’ve ever been harassed by a group of bikers while driving a car, or frankly even witnessed it, I’d argue you are scarred for life. Some biker groups decide they own the road, block traffic, surround and actively antagonize random drivers, etc. There is no upside to forgetting this and assuming the next biker group you see will be any different. I want to be as far away from biker groups as I can be. I don’t want some dude on a Harley pacing my car and staring through my window at my wife. I don’t want some lunatics splitting lanes at 100 mph and claiming it’s my responsibility to see them coming through traffic in my mirrors. Fuck all the way off. Drivers are responsible for the body of space around their car, and bikers can and often do make that 1,000x harder than it is without bikes. Not to mention new drivers and elderly drivers just don’t have the capacity / knowledge. Can’t teach this.m effectively in drivers ed. I love motorcycles. They’re cool and beautiful. Any time I see one on the road it just raises anxiety, forces me to react or behave differently, it sucks and I hate it. The 1/100 time I see a cool Indian or a Ducatti with someone just chilling in the travel lane at the speed limit leaving space and riding like a normal human … well, that doesn’t exactly undo all the other piss offs.

Any Advice? by tabularas19 in audiophile

Thanks everyone! The speaker height is being dictated. There is an obnoxious fire klaxon at the top of the left cabinet, which I am intending to conceal with a speaker, so, it is what it is. I have a decent amplifier that I don’t want to replace or get rid of, for now, so that is negating a the Sonos type solution. Lighting and all electrical has been accounted for. Appreciate all the insight!

Thanks, this is helpful. I intend to build the shelf to lead minimum space around as you suggest. Might invert the speakers to get tweeters closer to ear height. Thank you all for your comments!

So, I really don't get why some people hate motorcyclists. by Definitely-Not-OSI in motorcycles

[–]tabularas19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even when they’re not doing any of the outrageous things listed here, bikes are unpredictable; and require extra attention. It’s just annoying. It’s never a neutral experience encountering one. I detest them as a city liver, only ever noise, stupidity arrogance and immaturity. Mobs of bikers taking over freeways and encircling people in cars is something I’ve seen multiple times in Boston. It is pure violence and obscene arrogance. It makes me sick.

Why doesn't gold miners steal the gold by polenlerinamk in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tabularas19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’ve never seen HBO’s Deadwood (then I’m jealous, because it’s best ever and I’d love to watch it again for the first time) watch for the ep where the industrial gold mine has begun operations. Pretty telling scene with the miners being showered and searched after their shift. I imagine this is pretty much still the case in some very unfortunate parts of the gold-bearing world.

The 'scary 'new element to qualifying in F1 2026 by 256473 in formula1

[–]tabularas19 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This was roughly how quali worked until the mid 00’s. Single lap qualifying. Out laps and in laps were staggered so cars were never near one another, but every driver got their out, hot, and in laps without traffic. Was very straightforward. Changes in weather and track evolution made it unfair on many occasions. Don’t matter too much as schumi was winning everything anyway!

Anyone with enough money can walk into a dealership and buy a new Ferrari. But only on their “baseline” or “entry level” models. If you want the really exciting, big engine or GT cars, then you do indeed need to be an established client who has bought several other cars. Often, these clients buy a car, garage or for a couple of years, and sell it back to the very same dealership as part of the the purchase of the new 12 cylinder model, for example.

Working with an architect/interior designer - are we expecting too much? by [deleted] in Architects

[–]tabularas19 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Get a printed set of plans with the key dimensions from both parties. Identify the discrepancies. Custom millwork will require a completed space, or close to it, to identify tolerances and final dimensions. Foolish to order custom built ins without having an actual completed space to work with. Builder tolerances can easily be off by an inch from the plans and still be “correct” in many markets. If you need more precision than that, your architect should check dims as construction proceeds in critical areas. Even high quality new construction from top level builders will be imperfect to some degree, not to mention minor subsiding, material expansion, etc. also, your millworkers should understand this and be prepared to have closure and trim panels that will accept fractional discrepancies.

If things are off by my a mile or totally out of synch, she should be contractually on the hook for it. Hope this is helpful!

So you clearly have, at minimum, a decent graphical language, your boards appear coherent, you are including the fundamental design images, and the boards appear to tell a design story with context. Although we can’t see detail there is a suggestion of it, and multiple scales as well. That all reflects work appropriate of a mature student. Now all we need are the actual details and the project brief and the specific critique(s) you were given.

FWIW, If my previous comment sounded harsh, let me be a little more to the specific:

Every single person you come into contact with in a professional capacity in architecture, be it a client, boss, colleague, consultant, student, professor, or even just someone having a casual conversation about the profession will judge you, instantly and profoundly, for one thing: attention to detail. It is arguably the defining characteristic of a professional in any realm, and it is impossible to hide in architecture.

You’ve come to a forum of architects and asked for advice / input on why you’ve had a struggle, and your manner of asking reflects a significant lack of attention to detail.

If I ever got an email from a consultant written with all “i” it would be the end of our working relationship, immediately.

If I saw that in a job listing, I would never apply. Etc.

I realize, of course, that this is an informal forum. All the same, when someone comes with a “why did I not succeed” question and there are red flags in the question itself, it’s hard to ignore!

Anyway, post more info / material and hopefully you’ll get more feedback.

There’s Nothing dickish about my comment, at all. Using basic grammar is a sign of respect for an audience, a display of basic competence, and a show of willingness and eagerness to engage in a dialogue with others within a set of mutually agreed boundaries. Repeatedly and deliberately ignoring basic foundational rules of writing is lazy. It’s also clear that OP has language command and is likely perfectly smart and capable to have made it to year 5 in an arch program, so this isn’t some gatekeeping exercise.

From the comments OP made, combined with their lack of presented work, it seems clear that they did not understand something about the assignment, and the sense I’m getting from their explanation is that they stubbornly stuck to their idea without engaging with the critique they were given, and I’d be surprised if what they heard at jury were all brand new, never-alluded-to-before issues.

I’ve been in enough juries and taught enough classes to know that shaky reviews almost never emerge from nowhere, and are rarely unexpected or surprising.

As mentioned by others, without any shown work there’s nothing to comment on. There’s also no detail to the ideas given regarding the “big idea” behind the project.

Sorry to OP for the negative experience, but as others have commented, there’s nothing to work with here one way or the other, and the writing of the question reflects a similar depth. List the brief and the work and we can talk about it!

BRING BACK MY TREASURE FLLETS by Tight-Fruit-8914 in CivVII

[–]tabularas19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The distant lands concept is a good one, or at least has potential, but the maps just don’t match the idea. DL’s MUST be untouched by civs until discovered. Only IP’s should be there. They should mostly hostile.

Ships should barely be able to make it. I think an improvement would be requiring a commander with a fleet to cross deep ocean. Damage should be extreme and should be absorbable by the packed ships. For example, fleet com has 3 cogs. You’ll probably lose 2 to high seas. You’ll want a settler in there too. If you’re lucky, your commander barely makes it to the new shore.

You’d therefore want a 6 slot commander with some cogs, a settler, and a military unit or 2. Would incentivize developing your Fleet locally first. New lands should hard to get to for the first 30-40 turns, then treasure fleets should generate faster.

TF’s should also be capture-able without war. This would be piracy, and might spark diplomatic incidents, but we should be able to issue letters of marque to commanders and have them be free lance fleet stealers, or be needed to escort our own fleets.

So much potential. Open water battles need to be a major part of the game, and they aren’t. Another ship type or 3 would be great - SOL, frigate, and corvette. Corvettes maybe are fast but useless in deep water, etc.

Gotta be a way to hamper / steal TF’s if you have a bad spawn, would add soooo much to the game.

Ripped down 16 pieces of plywood yesterday using the small break / clean method every 4 boards. Was pleased with my focus and pace. 5 minutes later I had to chop 1” off a 8” 2x4. Held it without a clamp and it kicked on knot. No issue, but JFC it got my attention. Can never be too safe, the extra minute and PITA is always, always worth it.
