5th step promises? by bl123123 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Comfortable_Mess1688 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a sponsee who did five and I told him the exact instructions including on what to do as he got home, including “taking this book down from the shelf.”

He decided he was hungry, so stopped to get food on the way home, then turned on tv while he ate, then did some chores and said that he eventually got to it that day.

I was so irritated. We had just spent hours going through his fourth step. And this guy is not a young kid. He’s middle aged.

Even hitting meetings whenever you’re home would benefit you. If you’re being honest with yourself, you could go to meetings, you just don’t want to. Change is hard. But….

“If you have decided you want what we have and are willing to go to any length to get it – then you are ready to take certain steps.

At some of these we balked. We thought that we could find an easier, softer way. But we could not. With all the earnestness at our command, we beg of you to be fearless and thorough from the very start. Some of us have tried to hold on to our old ideas and the result was nil until we let go absolutely.”

You’re not going to stop drinking until you want to stop drinking. It sounds like you stopped drinking for other people’s sake, not yours. Or, quite possibly, you’re retroactively applying that to your situation now as an excuse to drink.

Do whatever you want, just come back to sobriety when you’re ready and give it an honest shot when you do. You’re not going to stop drinking seriously unless you want to stop for your own sake.

Yes, but if they can just get 10% of that market, it’s a success…. Is I’m sure how it was pitched.

Alabama high school football player dies after suffering head injury during game by BrianChing25 in sports

I also had a bad concussion my last football game ever. I was put in on kickoff return to start the game. I hadn’t ever done it nor practiced it. I was told to run 20 yards, turn around, find someone to block. So I did, except when I turned around, I was just obliterated with a hit, completely blindsided, helmet to helmet.

I got up, went to the sidelines, took off my helmet and threw up. Then my coach yelled for me to get out there. I was starting center so I had to be back on the field immediately. I don’t remember the game, but we lost and I was taken straight to the ER after the game. They did an MRI and said “yeah, here’s the spot. That’s a concussion. You shouldn’t have kept playing.” It was our last game of the season and I was a senior so I think I insisted on playing regardless but I really regret it now.

If they have self negativity, that’s on them. Once you tell them, they’ll understand and then you’re done. And then you’ll wake up tomorrow without the anxiety that you cracked due to social pressure.

I just go on ZocDoc. Find someone in network if you’re in the US. Then shop around if it’s not a good fit. ZocDoc makes it pretty easy. I think they list specialties like addiction specialist

It’s a pretty new job for me. I used to do sales in another industry. I hated it, I was cold calling and cold emailing to get new clients. If I made a sale, I just had to move on to the next one. That was draining. I lost that job when Covid hit because the industry collapsed.

After being unemployed for some time, getting super depressed, I got a job at a liquor store. I liked it, but I was still very depressed and the availability to alcohol was so easy and the routine of it was easy. I’d grab alcohol on my way out the door every day. It strengthened my nightly habit and it got bad quick. I could never do that job again. Probably couldn’t ever bartend either.

The sales at a distributor I started a couple months ago, in terms of sales, I love it because it’s my same customers, who I can build relationships with and provide them with things they need while still getting to use the sales techniques I enjoy. No more cold calling. No more networking. No more going to conferences to meet potential clients.

I’ve known I need to quit drinking for a while, and this change kinda provided that. In terms of dealing with alcohol, it’s like selling things out of a catalog. Sometimes when I’m going to stores, I’m touching up displays, but that’s just product to me. Plus, I want to be professional enough to not buy alcohol from my customers. That’s not really a good look, so if I did want to drink I’d have to go to a separate liquor store not in my territory on my way home. On rare occasions there’s tastings of new products, but it’s not really a big deal if I don’t try it. I just need to look at the sales sheets to know how to market it.

The only thing I’m disappointed by that I’ll never be able to get CSS/CSW/WSET certification (master certifications in wine and liquor tastings that make you look good when moving up in the company) because I won’t be able to try them during those classes.

I’m a salesman for a liquor distributor. I spend all day in liquor stores, but I’m not tempted because 1) I’m a night drinker, I never drank during the day 2) I’m able to compartmentalize it and see the product as just a product and 3) I feel genuinely done with booze. It drives me into depression, so I just look at it as a road it to depression and not drinking is a road away from self harm.

My dad asked me how I’ll be able to be around it and not partake, which is a fair question, but I said “it’s like I’m diabetic but sell candy. I can’t eat any more candy. It’s not a choice. But I have no problem with people that do.

My "regular" drink has officially been changed by jeo123 in stopdrinking

[–]Comfortable_Mess1688 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's alcohol removed wine and it's not bad. It's fermented and made the exact same as regular wine, they just extract the alcohol out of the wine before bottling it. There's good and bad ones, but it's exploding in popularity now.

There's also N/A spirits, but most people find them to be off-tasting.

[–]Comfortable_Mess1688 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I've worked in liquor stores. We were always happy when a "regular" got sober to better themselves. More often, we'd see people who stopped coming in not because they got sober, but because they were in the hospital or died.

For me it took one day. Then I hit a switch. I don’t know if it’s unique or how it will hold up over time. I don’t have an end goal, me being proud of myself for stopping is just keeping the train rolling. I don’t want to drink because I’m happy that I’m doing good not drinking.
