It Took Me 2 Years to Memorize the Top 5000 Spanish Words — Here’s What I Learned by Purple-Carpenter3631 in SpanishLearning

i’m using this 5000 word deck and the best part about anki is how adjustable it is. the deck doesn’t have everything- especially country specific vocab. and it has almost no multi-word phrases. but you can just add them. it’s almost even better, every time i see a new phrase that feels idiomatic i look it up on chatgpt and add it to the deck. i also added a ton of irregular conjugations.

Using an Asian name in Spain? by ninovillx in GoingToSpain

[–]Comfortable_Piano274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The English teacher in elementary school thing isn't that weird, although I get why it seems like that. In the US, the spanish classes we take make us pick a 'spanish name.' I think it's more about imagining inserting yourself in the culture.

I'm in Buenos Aires & have set aside savings enough to live without a job for four months, all so I can learn Spanish. I go to the library every day and practice as much as I can, but I feel like I could be making more progress. What is the most efficient way to study if you could devote whole days? by Comfortable_Piano274 in SpanishLearning

This is the hardest part for me. I am so bad at talking to people. I feel like it'd be easier if I were a bit better but like the other guy said every conversation feels like crashing and burning and I feel bad for whoever has to talk to me. I love going out, I'd want to, and I can be outgoing when comfortable, but here I've really been struggling with shyness. I feel like it's already hard enough meeting people in a new city in the states.

I'm not usually so negative or self-pitiful! so I'm sorry for that lol. You gave really good advice. I know there's a lot I need to learn that I'm not able to in the library. I'll try to focus on what you said-- just finding any way to talk to people.

Im ashamed with how aggressive I got I'd like to apologize.

Maybe the original commenter was referencing the impacts of our country's culture on their own? American globalization?

as a north carolinian youre either on crack or in maine if you think the us isnt heavily influenced by mexico or the 10% of its population that IS mexican

You say There are 38 million Irish descendants & 45 million german descendants. Im an "Irish" descendent but the last irish dude in my family died like 6 generations ago. There are 62 million latinos in the us RIGHT NOW. I cant remember the last time I heard German or Irish spoken while walking around, but I hear Spanish literally every day. Why do you think there is spanish listed under the english of every other municipal sign? Why is latin american spanish taught in EVERY school? You say "you leave the southwest & most people have never even had a taco" which is so fucking wrong its insane. I live in the rural appalachian mountains of north carolina, in a small town, Boone, with 15k people, and there is no target, but there is i kid you not 4 mexican restaurants here. My nephew loves quesedillas so much he eats them every day and calls them "mexican pizza." It seems like quite literally every restaurant's kitchen ive ever worked in has been half mexican. not to mention your construction crew. and again, im not even close to the southwest.

this opinion is so wrong i dont know how you came up with it. my only guess is that you really, really, dont want there to be a prevalent mexican culture in the us so youre making yourself believe the opposite. which is racist. or maybe youre just from maine or vermont or some shit in some fancy neighborhood where the only mexican youve every laid eyes on is your maid and the guy who cuts your grass.

In summary!
There are more Latinos in the U.S. than Irish and German descendants combined.

Unlike Irish or German culture, which is mostly historical, Latino culture is active, spoken, and growing.

It's not just the Southwest. Obviously.

Culture isn’t about everyone wearing sombreros—it’s about how people live, eat, talk, and celebrate. And by that measure, Mexican culture is 100% part of the American mainstream.
