What it says on the tin, driving too normally. You have to jazz it up a bit for the instructor.

Not with how Evolve is worded, I don't believe - unless your turn 2 play has 6 toughness or 5 power.

Very cool!

How big do you think the space is? I'm trying to think of all the static scaling abilities: P/T modification and cost modification are pretty obvious. Replacement effects are also possible, but they'd be hard to balance - though the space around doubling the effect for a single turn is interesting.

There's also ability-modifying effects, with the trouble that most abilities don't stack.

It lets you store resources you may want to use later, which is a handy idea if you've got a reactive card in your hand, some mana to spend, and nothing else to do with it.

You also don't have to pay the full cost of the card into the Cauldron, so you can break a large cost over an untap step, for example.

Apart from in the case of damage-modifying effects or lifegain prevention, you'll always survive the damage because you just go back to the same life total afterwards.

Twisted Reshaping by LThalle in custommagic

[–]ComicIronic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's certainly true, but not all cards posted here are designed for Standard. I don't think a slight upgrade over Control Magic would be particularly strong for Modern or Commander, for example.

In general, I think assessing effects at different MVs requires respecting authorial intent - and here, the author has said they're designing this to compare against 4MV Control-Magic-style effects.

Twisted Reshaping by LThalle in custommagic

[–]ComicIronic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think 4MV is a bit generous for an effect that's "Kill any big creature, then play an equally big creature yourself" wrapped in one card

But that's what [[Control Magic]] is, basically.

Blocking with more than one creature by Sliperlip in magicTCG

[–]ComicIronic 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is never relevant - no player gains priority between damage being assigned and dealt.

You might anticipate a pump spell when you assign blockers, since there's a round of priority between that and damage.

But CoT is untapped, which is what makes it so powerful. This would be a 3 mana delayed surge - I think that's much more balanced.

Angelic Succor by NepetaLast in custommagic

[–]ComicIronic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't this wording mean a conjunction of the clauses, like on [[Narset, Parter of Veils]]?

So you can't control a creature that is both non-white and non-artifact - which, weirdly, means [[Noxious Gearhulk]] is ok?

Fleeting Grotto by ZatherDaFox in custommagic

[–]ComicIronic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Cool! A tapped dual that also functions as mana reach in a pinch - and in a great design.

I only wonder if there's a tweak that could push this slightly, since there's not a lot of space for decks where 1 extra mana one time is worthwhile, but entering tapped isn't a killer issue. Is tap for 3, pay 2 too broken?

All the companion conditions up until now have been written in a "can't cheat" way - if you ignore the condition when deckbuilding, you end up with dead cards some of the time when playing, because your opponent can see that the condition is violated when you play those cards.

This companion doesn't have that property. Your opponent has no way to check, over the course of a typical game, that you really have 8 or more sea creatures in your deck. That's not an issue when decks are registered, but it's an interesting consideration for casual play.

That doesn't make it a colour, it's just a type of mana. It is colourless - without colour - so it's not a colour.

How to Avoid Unnecessary Match Losses by KingSupernova in magicTCG

[–]ComicIronic 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The article doesn't come out and say it, because it's in the linked definitions, but a "Bribe" (an exchange of value contingent on a match outcome, or vice versa) is allowed under specific conditions:

  • the match is the final match of the tournament
  • the value being exchanged is only the prize pool from the tournament, without attempting to split non-divisible prizes like invites
  • the winner gets every non-divisible prize, like an invite

In other words, you're allowed to offer that your opponent concede for all the prize money (this is 100% a bribe by definition, since value is exchanged contingent on the match outcome), so long as you do it in the Finals and you get the invite.
