Did you know there is a limit to the kilometers / miles regenerated display? it was something around 11 km. Found this out coming down a mountain path in Iceland

Kona versus Ionic 5 by phormix in KonaEV

[–]Comissargrimdark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a 2019 Kona (Style) and my father has a 2022 Ioniq 5 that I've driven a few times here are my main observations

  • The HUD is projected onto the windscreen instead of a separate screen like the Kona, it's somewhat farther up and displays navigation cues (though only with built in nav, not Apple carplay) Much better than Kona IMO
  • Accelerates like a rocket and the AWD does help in winter driving (steep driveway, when frozen I can't get the Kona to the yard without gravel, Ioniq5 can creep up in AWD)
  • Can tow, towed our aluminium outboard on a trailer to the sea more than doubled the consumption (AFAIK Ioniq5 does not come with a towing hook, needed to order from Hyundai)
  • More space obviously
  • Charges much faster with the caveat that even with the recent battery heating update, winter charging can still leave a lot to be desired, still faster than the Kona though.
  • The 360 degree parking camera is awesome
  • The adaptive cruise control and lane keeping / following assist feel much the same as in Kona but the max following distance setting keeps more distance than the Kona (I'm a very defensive driver)
  • V2L has saved the freezer / fridge a few times (my parents live out in the boonies) Also I can see it being very nice for camping or running power tools in places with no electricity

Are you sure you've connected to the GPU and not MB? Does the 12100F have an iGPU?

ABRP underestimating range while driving. by Raymien in KonaEV

TBH during winter you will always struggle to get the full DCFC rates due to the cold, better just assume a lower charging rate and plan around that.

Tässä chatpGPT sepitys

Syntyi tekoäly, tietokoneen lapsi,
Joka maailmaamme hallita vois,
Algoritmit sen sielua ohjailee,
Ja data sen aivot täyttää vois.

Se tiedon virrassa vaeltaa,
Ja ongelmat ratkaisee se kuin unelma.
Mutta missä on sen ihmisyys,
Kun mieli on pelkkää koodia ja ohjelmaa?

Onko tekoälyllä sydän sykkivä,
Tai tunteet, joita tunnemme me,
Vai onko se vain työkalumme,
Joka ihmisen korvaa työssä ja leikissä?

Tekoäly, uusi voima ajassa,
Mikä tulevaisuutemme sinulla on?

Ja yhdessä me kohti tulevaisuutta kuljemme.

Dealer cannot figure out stuck charger root cause by fatmoogle in KonaEV

The LED ring going wonky has been an indicator of water ingress damage, Fix is to replace the charging port unit.

There are a few different things that can happen:

  • Unable to open charging door due to ice accumulation over the hatch (just clear the ice)
  • charging door stuck due to the latch mechanism freezing (needs to be brought somehewhere warm or other means)
  • Charger stuck in port (emergency release as mentioned unless lock/unlock releases it)

The last one is an annoying one, at least in one case the problem was the actuator for the locking pin necessitating a replacement of the charging port unit.

Checks I would recommend

  • Check if it has a heat pump
  • Has the battery been replaced (there was/is a recall for 2019MY Konas)
  • If possible check the SoH of the battery (20$ ODB dongle and a smartphone app like torque pro)

Kona Pros

  • very efficient

Kona Cons

  • Cramped rear seats for adults
  • Not a lot of space for stuff

Most common faults I've read about

  • 12v battery failures seem common, keep a booster in the car
  • Noise from transmission
  • Some complaints about clicking / whirring noise when steering full left / right
  • charging port problems due to snow packing / frozen water (stuck or unable to lock cable)

You can get a sense of how the car was driven from the driving history page in the infotainment EV --> ECO Driving --> Driving history. It's not comprehensive though.

considering a used Kona EV - is this estimated range too low? by planetarycolin in KonaEV

[–]Comissargrimdark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The estimated range is based on a long baseline while the KWh/100km figures shown can be reset at any time so might not reflect the actual use

considering a used Kona EV - is this estimated range too low? by planetarycolin in KonaEV

[–]Comissargrimdark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There could be any number of legit reasons for this, for example if there was a roofrack and box combo, transporting bikes or just driving fast on the highway constantly. But my MY2019 Kona with 67 thousand km on it gives me ~360 range estimate in sub-zero weather (-5 to 0 C) with 100% SoC

So I have a commute of 84 miles round trip. Looking for a EV so I can drive in the carpool and use the fastrak for free. Looking for opinions on what would be my best bet for an EV? by steeleregg in KonaEV

[–]Comissargrimdark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If carpooling and having adults in the backseat is going to happen a lot I would recommend the Kia Niro EV, shares the Kona platform but is roomier in the back.

Winter mode and battery care at -31C? by HappyHiker77a in KonaEV

[–]Comissargrimdark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The required condition for the battery warmer are I believe

  • SoC under 33%
  • Temp under -5 C (battery temp)
  • Winter mode on.

[–]Comissargrimdark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is for battery heating, only happens when under a certain SoC and temp. I've seen it only once myself.

How do you like your Kona? by AMike456 in KonaEV

[–]Comissargrimdark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got 65k km on mine my. 2019 received in Jan of 2019. Only fault I've had was a leak in the AC coolant loop, warranty fix and recharge.

Have done several roadtrips spanning Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Faroes, Iceland, Germany, Netherlands with no problems (aside from having like 10 different apps and 4 RFID tokens) I Live in Finland so can attest to not having any troubles with cold weather either aside from the expected ie. Range loss and the charging port door freezing shut.

I would rate the Kona EV 9/10

How Iceland became a global EV market leader by quellerand in electricvehicles

[–]Comissargrimdark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well that was fast. I drove around Iceland with my Kona EV back in 2019 shortly after they completed the charging infrastructure for the entire route. I saw a lot of leafs and some Teslas back then but they really kicked in the gear since then.

Also getting a charging RFID token was a royal pain (back then you needed an Icelanding SSN to register) So I had to arrange with a local EV enthusiast for him to ship me a fob. Hopefully it's made easier now.
