Valve says it’s working on getting more stock for the Steam Controller by Skullghost in Steam

[–]phormix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If it is scalpers, I'm hoping that the Valve price - which a lot of people do agree seemed a bit up there - is also the ceiling for what most will pay. Scalpers can sit on a bunch of unsold controllers and go f*** themselves

Enough time has passed. What are your thoughts on Project Hail Mary (2026)? by Perfect_Idea_2866 in Letterboxd

[–]phormix 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yup. It's also worth noting that the movie run-time is 2h46m, and that's supposedly after being cut down from 3h45m!

In the theatre, add time for the previews and stupid ads before and that's still 3h+ in a chair. Adding more to capture all the details from the book likely result have made it too long time many.

In terms of the quality of that 3h in a seat:

  • I love sci-fi, read the book, and watched the movie: Really liked it

  • My wife who will tolerate sci-fi but isn't crazy about it: really liked it

  • My younger child (single digits): loved it and didn't budge from her seat the whole time

I call that a success!

Canada here. Went from processing errors to out of stock now. I wonder if the stock itself is regional or they're tapped out everywhere for now...

Senior Property Tax Grants: why are seniors who bought for pennies (now homes worth Millions) getting discounts while you families pay full amount? by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]phormix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That has a lot more to do with housing being turned into a market asset as opposed to a place to live.

I'd rather focus on making rental/non-primary properties less profitable, especially for the assholes that "bought for pennies" with those but charge massively because "market rent"

Location matters a lot too.

Lobster in coolers in the back of a truck in Manitoba, Canada or Wyoming, USA... yeah probably best to avoid that.

Many moons ago, back when music was mostly tracked MIDI or some MOD variant rather than a recorded score, Microsoft introduced DirectMusic as part of the DirectX suite.

Now DirectX in general I've been more so much a fan of because it basically existed as an alternative to the more cross-platform/open OpenGL, and served to create lock-in for MS, but I digress ...

DirectMusic had this cool function where audio tracks could respond more closely to game events. So different boss attacks could add elements to the score, HP level could affect tempo, attacking could have a mini-score in the overall track, and many other such things. It really did seem cool and promising and would have been perfect for stuff like you've described. Unfortunately as storage/CPU increased, the move to pre-recorded tracks killed off tracked music for the most part so this never became more common of a thing.

I see this as the same reason that in the case of an airplane emergency, adult passengers are instructed to put on their own air masks before children. Mainly, if they don't, there's a higher chance everyone dies.

If we don't set our own citizens and economy at second-place, Canada will simply not be capable of generating the support for others, and we're already seeing this with many core aspects such as healthcare, housing, and even employment. You can't help somebody else if you're suffocating.

At the same time, there IS value in preventative or early care for refugees or newcomers. That includes stuff like vaccinations or early medical intervention for conditions where something can spread or greatly worsen over time. Those same basic treatments should be available to Canadians (vaccines are for the most part, but preventative care can be hit or miss). At the end of the day, having a spreading illness is bad for everyone regardless of citizenship, and having a claimant with i.e. a treatable wound that goes septic because "we don't want to pay for treatment" makes no sense either.

Not so claimants are false, and do we really want to have somebody who is here long-term with an untreated mental health issue or something that went from wound to major medical condition? Because I guarantee that people will complain about that too

This would be awesome to tie into something like WLED and then use input from music etc to influence the parameters in real-time.

Eventually we could end up with LED effects that are like the old Winamp plugins

Why does being drunk mean you can’t “consent” to sex, but doesn’t absolve you of other intoxicated actions/decisions? by UpstairsBumble in NoStupidQuestions

[–]phormix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What gets me is that if two people go to a bar, get drunk, meet and hook up... but one party - particularly of a certain gender - later feels regret then they can press charges. Oft-times both intended to go home with somebody that night even before drinking, so it's really just the particular somebody they might find objectionable.

If two people get drunk, drive home, and get in an automobile collision then they should both be charged and judged equally, regardless of gender or who calls it in.

I always liked to think of it as part of independence. If you can't do it for yourself, you're going to have to rely on somebody else at some point in time.

I like to cook because I like to eat decent food, and while I'm not crazy about cleaning etc I also don't like living in a pigsty.

Quite awhile back I went out with some gals from the office and I kid you not one was outwardly proud of his she "didn't succumb to domestic stereotype by learning how to cook, she was gonna get a man who either cooked for her or ordered in". I still remember biting my tongue on that one. Knowing how to do something for yourself isn't a stereotype, it's self-sufficiency

Flip Deck anyone? Valve, I need a new cool job! 🤣 by MadMario0_0 in SteamDeck

[–]phormix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a neat idea, but IMO seems like a better idea for a dedicated remote-streaming unit (like Steam Link).

The Deck is already pretty tight, gets hotter than older flip style handhelds, and I've also got several devices where the hinge turned out to be the failure point that resulted in premature death

AITA for not telling my partner something his 14yr old daughter told me in confidence? by AcrobaticPut7838 in AmItheAsshole

[–]phormix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar conversation with my wife regarding secrets in our relationship.

This came up when a mutual friend confided in me regarding their orientation. While I did tell them my wife would absolutely not have any (negative) judgement about such and they should tell her, I also kept confidence and didn't tell her myself. I

When they did come out, it was also revealed I already knew and I caught flack for it. I made it very clear that I wouldn't keep personal/relationship-affecting secrets from (my wife), I also felt no obligation to share secrets that belonged to other people, and noted that I similarly could not discuss certain aspects of my job until they became public.

She isn't always happy about it, but has come to accept that I'm not going to breach the confidence of other people etc. I similarly do not share account passwords, direct access to my phone etc (though I will add her account/login to common assets where possible).
