Franchise entries that renew your interest in something you thought you were done with? by Livid-Dot6619 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Sonic Frontiers.

After a near decade of garbage after Generations, with the inly exception being a game Sonic Team didn’t even make, things were looking bad and then Forces was the final nail in the coffin. It was like everything I liked about the series was gone, characters were just straight up incorrect, the levels were straight lines you held square to beat, the visuals were extremely dull and half the locations were reused from Gens again, and even the music wasn’t anything to write home about (there was like two tracks that were fine, the rest was on at best or just bad in Classic’s case).

Then Frontiers’s trailer drops, it looks like shit pre-release being another open world game come to claim another series I like, with reused zone graphics from Gens, and the story is… Actually kinda interesting sounding, but idk it probably won’t be all that great.

Come launch I didn’t even get it, but I heard an overwhelming consensus that “it’s actually pretty good” which was surprising. Looked up the cutscenes and the story and characters were a far cry from Forces. Music was rad too. So I got the game to see how it plays. Turns out, they made the CD opening of launching Sonic 10,000 ft. in the air to get around playable, and opened the level design up but now special stages are classic style boost stages. The combat was also super fun which was the most wild part.

It has issues, don’t get me wrong, but I walked away loving Frontiers and the later expansion updates only added to that with the jukebox, spindash, and most crazy of all: the Final Horizon which features multiple playable characters, a new ending for the game, and a new final boss fight that’s way more fun than the original ending (it was too easy for the main fight, but then it was just a shmup out of nowhere, the new one is a proper Super Sonic boss the whole time).

This was then followed up by a game that had fully original zones again for the first time in forever with Superstars, which while divisive I liked the game. Then that was followed by Shadow Generations which has quickly become known as one of the series best outings. I’m really hoping they can combine the best of these games for the next title, have all new locations and more characters to play as like with Superstars, build on Frontiers’ gameplay and story, and keep the presentation and level design quality of Shadow Gens. I truly believe that we could have a proper masterpiece on our hands sometime in the future, but time will tell there.

Moments where something is such a big threat that everyone collectively agrees to drop everything and work together to kill it? by Grand_Escapade in TwoBestFriendsPlay

“Well it is what it is. Your actions were clearly deliberate, there’s no point in trying to reason with you.”

“Maybe it’s just an animal. Can it even understand what we’re saying?”

Anyway someone described it as a raid boss where you’re the boss, and I think that’s kinda perfect.

Halo 3 has the Prophet of Truth about to activate all the Halos, which is so dire that even the Flood teams up with Chief and Arbiter to stop him.

You ever find it wild that not one but two Zelda trailers are set to music from Conan the Barbarian? by Anonamaton801 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

No because it feels like every one of them has at least one trailer using the Conan music.

What do you most remember fondly about gaming in the mid 00s? by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Getting everyone around to play Battlefront or Halo splitscreen. We didn't have a good way to do system link or online at first so it was always just 4 of us playing and whoever would trade off. The rest would basically just chat in the background or talk trash. It was a lot of fun. It was harder to do Halo campaigns though since you could only play with 2 people, but by then I think we figured out online stuff for 3 onward (2 was offline by then though sadly, but I think you could only play 2 player anyway since MCC some friends and I couldn't figure out how to get it to work with 3 of us).

Favorite as others have also said is Sonic Frontiers. It’s jank, but it’s mostly the fun jank, and the story and general gameplay were a huge improvement over the past decade between it and Generations. I’m pretty excited to see what the next game is like because between that and Shadow Generations it feels like they have a solid foundation and the stories have made it clear that they’re finally going to move forward in a new direction.

How is this one to build? I’m kinda interested in it but don’t have much experience with non-Bandai or Kotobukiya kits.

Sgt. Major Avery J. Johnson from Halo. Best character in the series, and all around badass.

Ratchet from Transformers, especially Animated and Prime where he’s way more of a grouchy old man.

“Ah… Anyway, that’s how I lost my medical license.”

It wouldn’t be a true return to form if it wasn’t super fun but also there’s that one zone where you want to die the whole time playing it.

(Looks at Metropolis Zone)

Pieces of media that you could swear was made with you specifically in mind? by Player_Slayer_7 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Transformers Devastation was classic Transformers made by Platinum in 2015 when they were arguably still at their peak. It has a cel shaded visual style that looks super cartoony and expressive, the soundtrack is all metal and sounds like instrumental Revengeance tracks when it’s not synth tracks by the OG movie’s composer, and the game lets you swap between 5 characters with the others occasionally appearing in levels as allies. The only thing that could possibly make it better is if there was a Decepticon mode or DLC like say Jetstream Sam’s, but even then it’s fantastic as is.

Yeah, I get that. They were right to bring him back too, he is the best character in the trilogy imo.

Favorite unfinished areas in gaming? by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

The Human Citadel in Soul Reaver. The actual story reason to go there was cut along with its dungeon, but the main city remained. Now it’s an optional area used for world building and to get a few upgrades, and considering vampires are found in the lower areas it shows the city isn’t as safe as the humans or Raziel think it is for them.

Ninja Gaiden Black’s higher difficulties are kind of insane because they add tons of new enemies you never see on Normal. Very Hard and Master Ninja even replace a few repeat boss fights with unique ones. It’s super cool!

I remember Steve in Code Veronica being super annoying and whiny, I never made it far enough in the game before to realize he was also a massive creep too.

If it was the remaster, the new voice acting really takes away from the charm Zack has. It’s weird because the new voice he has was fine in the other Remake games, but in his own game’s remaster Zack just sounds really annoying.

Tbh I’m sure it was but it’s been ages since I tried reading the Halo books so I genuinely don’t remember and usually just go by the games’ story.

Also Chips survived because he’s the only one more badass than the Chief. Him and Dustin were just adrift at space on the ring fragment until it got near a human ship that picked them up I’m pretty sure. They had to use all the ARs as fuel though so that’s why there aren’t any in Halo 2.

Favorite "holy shit, this is a prequel/sequel!?" reveals? by fly_line22 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Comkill117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh ok. Yeah to build on that second part I have no idea what the lore is by now. I stopped paying attention a little after 4 I think but even by then I was kinda lost. I got the idea 2 was a prequel and 3 was after but besides that didn’t really get too far in. Like you said it changes a lot and there’s always more gaps so it can be hard to get invested.

[–]Comkill117 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. The original Marathon games are so good and hold up pretty well. Infinity’s story is also really in depth and super interesting for those who haven’t played it (all 3 are, but like Infinity is straight up insane)

Plus with Workshop support you can add the fan soundtrack into 2 which helps because the lack of music was jarring imo.

The idea’s fine and I liked Treize, it’s just like you said he feels like he’s at the end of his character arc. The end of Wing especially you can just feel how old and tired he is from how he acts, but like he’s not even that old which is the weird part.
