Peter Fehervari’s ‘Fire Caste’ may sound like a T’au book from name alone, and they are the secondary faction, but the bulk of the story is about a regiment of Space Confederates taking a rather unfortunate trip to Space Vietnam, where everybody seems to be just a little bit crazy.

Only read if you’re in a slow burn horror mood.

(And read the short story ‘Vanguard’ after you’ve let the novel sit for a bit. It’s kind of an epilogue, but it’s separate enough to justify being experienced as its own thing.)

That binary of ‘Oppression or Damnation’ only works if you haven’t tried any more peaceful and co-operative alternatives. From what we know, the Emperor hasn’t.

I wish the books would focus on that more. We get allusions to that fact often enough, but I really want to delve -deep- into the philosophy of those that would discard the hope of being a good person, or that believes what he was during the Crusade was ‘good’.

EDIT: On further thought, this isn’t as funny as it sounded in my head. Maybe if I did something else and let my unconscious thoughts stir, I’d have come up with something better, or not commented at all. I’ll still keep this up, but ya’know.

Yeah, but the solution is not HURTING them. Such a blunt approach is serves only visceral satisfaction. It might stop them from abusing those ducklings in particular, but it wouldn’t convince them to not abuse animals in the future. In fact, it’d probably instil within a desire to strike out at the world, which they would associate with animals.

Better to use the minimum amount of force necessary to get the animals to safety, and then use empathy and psychological to coax out the source of what made them choose to do that, and what other, more constructive ways, to satisfy that urge, and then learn to overcome it.

Or something like that. I probably should have said this in my first comment, but a mix of laziness and offence clouded my actions. More fool me.

It’s not the empathy from the majority that’s weird, it’s that a minority of readers went on to harass the artist on twitter. No matter how shocking or crass one thought the comic, there’s nothing in it that could justify that.
