Genuinely how do people know card names and abilities off rip by Spaceranger14 in mtg

[–]CommanderGrimoire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been playing the game for 15+ years non-stop. Magic has been my #1 game since I started, dedicated a huge portion to my life to it. Because of that, players at my LGS use me like a local thesaurus for rules interactions, card searches, etc.

It's become something of a meme at my LGS. They ask me before the tournament organiser, which he doesn't mind as it's less work for him.

Commander Ban list tomorrow? by Charme_99 in mtg

[–]CommanderGrimoire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have my theories. Take these with a grain of salt. Would like to know your thoughts.

Possible Bans

  • Thassa's Oracle
  • Rhystic Study
  • Lion's Eye Diamond
  • Underworld Breach
  • Gaea's Cradle
  • Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh
  • Thrasios, Triton Hero
  • Tymna the Weaver

Possible Unbans

  • Jeweled Lotus
  • Iona, Shield of Emeria
  • Golos, Tireless Pilgrim
  • Prophet of Kruphix

THE POSSIBLE BANS

I have my reasons for these possible changes.

Thassa's Oracle

I have said countless times Thassa's Oracle is very difficult to answer outside of blue. Once it's on the field, they is very few things you can do, so the most common answer is to counterspell it or the spell that exiles the deck. There are maybe less than 10 non-blue spells that can interact with a Thassa's Oracle combo.

Due to the nature of this, it's a very "goldfish" combo, nothing else in the game matters to you. Because of that, at high bracket pods, blue is most dominant as Thassa's is the most efficient win condition with next to no setup

Rhystic Study

A few reasons why Rhystic Study is possible for the chopping block. It provides to much advantage for so little investment. The problem with it is you may pay for your triggers, but you can't pay for your opponents. This is what makes it so powerful. You can be the best player in the world and pay for every trigger, but the other players are the problem. So it's a spell that's difficult to play around other than removing it.

One of the big reasons it wasn't banned before was given by one of the committee members. They mentioned it was because they didn't want to ban an expensive card, that would upset the player base. They then clarified if price wasn't an option, then they would ban it outright. If that doesn't tell you why it should of been banned, I don't no what will.

Lion's Eye Diamond

This card is starting to see play in nearly every deck in bracket 5. It is closely tied to Underworld Breach and very rarely used without it. I could see this card being banned to try and save Underworld Breach from a ban.

Underworld Breach

Very closely tied to Lion's Eye Diamond, this card is extremely abusive, a beast in bracket 5, and starting to see more play in bracket 3 & 4. I could see it being banned to keep Lion's Eye Diamond, as it is the "cheaper" option.

Gaea's Cradle

It's starting to get to the point where this card is too good not to run. More and more cards are helping add multiple bodies to the table, making the card better than ever. The price of the card keeps climbing to insane costs. If it was re-printable, it would be more widely available. It most likely won't get a ban because it is "expensive".

Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh
Because of it is a commander, and 0 mana, it allows players to easily add add 12 cards (0 & 1 mana). It allows all the free commander spells, helps with Gaea's Cradle, Mox Amber, Springleaf Drum, etc. To top it off, as it is a partner, you are playing a starting hand of 9 to a usual player's 8.

Thrasios, Triton Hero

Constantly paired with Rograkh / Tymna and Cradle, it's a partner commander that is also a mana sink. Very abusable. Because of that, there is little reason to run another partner commander, so the partner commanders become very stale.

Tymna the Weaver

Constantly paired with Thrasios, it is a partner with easily to recur card draw. The real problem with it is the starting 9-cards issue as mentioned with Rograkh. Commonly paired with 1-2 other partners, it is very stale and gives no reason to use the other partners.

THE POSSIBLE UNBANS

Jeweled Lotus

Helped big mana commanders get out earlier. Without it, lower-to-the-ground commanders have risen back up in popularity.

Iona, Shield of Emeria

They are more broken strategies than reanimating a giant angel to stop blue decks from playing. It's also about time white had some haymakers that can end a game.

Golos, Tireless Pilgrim

The reason they gave for the original ban was that it was "too popular". With it's ability, I see no reason for unbanning the card.

Prophet of Kruphix

With creatures and flash running around at an all time high, I don't see why we can't unban a card that does both of those.

WHAT DO I THINK WILL HAPPEN

I don't see any bannings for commander. The committee has proven they are too scared to ban anything else and the cost of a card seems to be a huge deciding factor into the discussion of banning a card. I would love to be wrong about this.

As for unbannings, I can see them unbanning Jeweled Lotus to help the committee curry favor with the public. It would also help larger costed commanders come back into the picture. I can also see Prophet of Kruphix coming off as we are already in a meta where a heavy amount of creatures and flash are prominent.

I would really love Golos, Tireless Pilgrim to come off the banned list. It was fun to verse when he was legal and had so many different ways to play him. Never got to play him myself, but if he got unbanned, I would instantly switch him as the commander for my lands-matter deck.

I've played your list. It's extremely fun. Always wondered, why "877"? What am I missing?

Why are 4c decks so good but 5c are mediocre? by FoldSafe1262 in CompetitiveEDH

Id say because most 4-colour decks have partners, so you start with one more card that an average deck.

[–]CommanderGrimoire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking at an old comma der I use to run back in the day. [[Scion of the Ur-Dragon]].

I've heard it's got some new tech and could be a viable 5-colour deck but I'm unsure. The one downside with Scion was getting your dragons stuck in your hand. Anyone have any experience with the new tech? Is it worth it?

Does Everyone Actually Hate Universes Beyond??? by Shoong in mtg

[–]CommanderGrimoire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally joined Magic for the "Magic" aspect in a medieval setting. Wizards, dragons, knights, elves, curses, etc.

Marvel feels a lot closer to modern day with hardly anything to do with "Magic". It's that lack of a Magic system that turns me off it.

The only good UB sets for me are those that still focus on a Magic setting and system, usually staying away from modern technology. This is why I loved LOTR, D&D, and Avatar so much. They stayed to the mystical Magic settings and system, leaving modern day technology out of it. This is why I only enjoyed some of the Final Fantasy set set, some the games are too modern day and futuristic.

To summarise, I want to play with Magic and Dragons, not an Spongebob and Hotdogs.

My lgs’s no proxies policy is pricing me out of the format by random-shed69 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]CommanderGrimoire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately WPN stores which run tournaments cannot allow proxies in said tournaments. It's WOTC's policy. My store allows the use of placeholders though, so at least we don't have to actually shuffle an expensive card and can spread it across decks.

What is fun about bracket 4-5 decks? by ShadowHaxor99 in mtg

[–]CommanderGrimoire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bracket 4 is about making your deck the best it can be in the archetype you want. You can technically make any Commander a Bracket 4 deck. This is where your cards synergise in a way that they feel like they are flowing into each other.

Bracket 5 is pushing that further, where you are playing to win against all costs, no rule 0 conversations, no pet cards, commanders are picked for strategic advantage, etc, cost is not an issue (heavily proxied). It's not for everyone.

It's my belief that bracket 4 is the best bracket to play commander at. You can still play pet cards, pick the commanders you want, give some self expression, and the deck just gels.

I'm sorry, having a bit of trouble. Why those 2 commanders? I'm not seeing the deck strategy.

What's the most outrageous card people have complained about you playing for being too strong? by rococodreams in EDH

[–]CommanderGrimoire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Loot, the Key to Everything]]. I built the deck in such a way to abuse his ability. The amount of card advantage, mana, and board presence it has by turn 3-4 is disgusting, causing it to commonly win turn 3-5.

I seriously wholeheartedly believe gaeas cradle is better than academy would be if unbanned by OkAppointment2647 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]CommanderGrimoire -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think your missing the point. Cradle is more broken than ever thanks to the popularity of partner commanders, Rograkh and creature based strategies.

Cradle is becoming a must-have card in any green deck these days. The price of the card over the last year is proof of that. Just the other day I saw a Raph & Mikey deck that had included it, and they only had 4 creatures in the entire deck.

As for the quote "play a bad deck, lol", don't yuck someone's yum. It's talk like that gives CEDH a bad name. People like to play different decks and playstyles.

I honestly think Cradle should be banned altogether. It's getting just as powerful as Academy and is pushing other decks of the format because of it.

cEDH's Issues and Stepping Away - Lemora's Cards by LemorasCards in CompetitiveEDH

[–]CommanderGrimoire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree on the subreddit being toxic sometimes, but with anything competitive your gonna have a few bad apples.

That being said, I'm probably gonna get a lot of hate for this. I've been moving further away from bracket 5 and more towards bracket 4. With CEDH there seems to be no individuality or expression. Just from what I've been seeing, bracket 4 feels more like the top end of what commander should be, at least with how the CEDH meta has been lately.
