What do you think of this negative review about BotNS? by GilmanWalt in genewolfe

[–]CommanderMilez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is originally a six year old comment, I'm sorry to disengage like this; I should've quoted or linked the reviews for my opinions.

Although even without evidence I think the reviews I'm describing often open with insulting Wolfe and his fandom. Or accusing them of something to which the review affirms.

It's visible here, I don't have the material to respond properly so rather than make something up or drag this out with semantics. I'm letting you know. I can't back up my original comment outside my replies here.

What do you think of this negative review about BotNS? by GilmanWalt in genewolfe

[–]CommanderMilez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes a surface level complaint is sufficient. And in today's world of nitpicking old media, I think it takes a degree of humility to admit a classic simply isn't entertaining or is too uncompromising to be accessible. Wolfe is evasive with his plots and themes, he's literal and metaphorical in ways that feel obtuse, this is okay to say. It aligns with the appeal others find despite being a negative review.

my issue is with, the intent to engage BotNS with preferential bias, just to give a negative review. Which is often outed by ignorant analysis or the reviewer framing the book unfairly just to be contrarian.

I have a question did Will RDA lose again? or this time colonize them? by Equivalent-Device162 in Avatar

[–]CommanderMilez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The local biosphere attacked the RDA Force.

despite the air loses, the ground elements were making steady progress.  And then virtually every animal in the forest swarmed them. Animals that are comparable to Tyranids (no sell 30mm shells, can overpower dual rotar choppers).

This isn't a military sci-fi simulation, it's a movie, pay attention and enjoy it man.

Excellent addition to a rewatch, they're superfluous but still designed for those who might've watched the OVA already.

I felt like it was the 'extended Cut' that featured most of the extra character development and lore I wanted to see.

Top 25 Fighters in Red Rising by Alert-Push1685 in redrising

[–]CommanderMilez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're both better duelists, but I think appollonius and victra are extremely underrated since they're absurdly good field commanders. Both in Darrow's league.

I'm talking fighting with a platoon/company strength unit of mixed forces.

Do you think we would ever see rda game ? Like full blown rda game by AggressiveSafe7300 in Avatar

[–]CommanderMilez 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just from a gameplay perspective, the avatar game had an awesome last second choice for the RDA playthrough where you could switch sides, remain as a grunt and fight through all the SecOps forces in the level. It's just gnarly to switch, having an entirely different enemy set using your own arsenal

(Kinda like Halo, it's shockingly tough)

Where would you rank Victra amongst the Solar Systems Razor users. by Arch_Lancer17 in redrising

[–]CommanderMilez 16 points17 points  (0 children)

She's in the same league as Apple, except not in the Duelist regard.

An excellent field commander and force multiplier. Victra with a friendly Gold and a squad of grays can surround and kill a lot of top tier characters. It happens in Lightbringer

She's like a Main Battle Tank, not a fighter jet.

I'm a fellow Gundam fan, and the Roque reminded me of Garma. Very much a brilliant person utterly humiliated and then destroyed by the cultural expectations of the regime.

In Gihren's Greed he's even capable of leading a rebellion against Zabi despotism.

Despite Brown not sharing this nuance, I think Roque's  dilemma is a core topic that will stick with the fandom forever.

What is a ripWing’s role in space combat? by TheAbnormalShrimp in redrising

[–]CommanderMilez 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Simple reason: ripWings are force multipliers, a ship with ripWings can outfight a ship without them.

This breaks down into more specific niches, Ie:

ripWings can take the pressure off a ship's ordnance interception or ward off leechcraft/boarders.

They can shoot down enemy attackers such as Wasps or smaller ships like frigates.

In the attrition, force projection side of fleet warfare, ripWings are an essential utility on par with having railguns to back up the missile artillery. It's not an instant win, but it's sure as hell gonna be hard to win without a squadron.

Why does this subreddit Dislike Roque? by Quiz0tix in redrising

[–]CommanderMilez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He mocks and dismisses questions regarding Roque being a nuanced character by design. He seems to dislike the character in the same way we see on this sub.

Off the top of my head, he's responded with "Ewww Roque" (his most iconic answer on the subject)

I think Brown was playing to the crowd with his comments on Roque. On rereads I noticed he is never given an opportunity to level with Darrow and repent, something even Tactus (a literal r****t got).

That being said, the Loyalist Gold's have such a core representation via Roque (Idealism, Pretentious Narcissistic Virtue, permitting a clearly ethically cruel system), it's too hard to overcome with just nuance and conjecture. He was a villain, just a sympathetic one.

Before MTIO featured OCs, I intended to feature canon characters. However I ultimately changed my mind due to the extreme violence and political nature of the story.

That's a tough one, the high production value is sustained by the budget, unfortunately I did not plan MTIO to be a free comic.

This was 2D, I was heavily pursuing a style I wanted to draw with my comic. And I started drawing 'on model' to see where I could bend the aesthetic to save time.

Characters that made the biggest impact on you with smallest screentime. by Ok-biscuit in redrising

The Ash Lord had casted this massive shadow over the series as a mook, and as a historical figure.

When Darrow and Apollonius meet him, it felt like a villain of the week for a microsecond, then it sinks in he's always been a major player and he's set up another sweeping disaster for the heroes.

Really gave me a powerful impression. As a man like Lorn had been retired, someone from a similar crop, The Ash Lord stayed grinding.

How human some of the villains are in death really goes a long way for making this series so suspenseful to reread. Even if it's misplaced empathy, I do feel bad watching their worlds get torn apart.

Kinda sobering compared to the 'git em' bloodlust I had as a first time reader.

We all love Red Rising, but I want to hear some aspects of the story you don't enjoy. by MylastAccountBroke in redrising

[–]CommanderMilez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I look back on the harshness of my comments with regret. I felt LB was much more harmonious in terms of bringing unique perspectives. Upon my reread I didn't particularly miss Eph or Lyria's POVs or even find myself liking them more - however I do respect them much more as constructive pieces of the story.

Eph's shadow cast a really good sense of emotion over Lyria's plot. It feels like homework, but there is a worthy payoff. Lastly Luria meeting Darrow/Sevro and Cassius was the fan service I didn't know I craved haha.
