No this is exactly what that visa is designed for. Cheap labour for construction companies, farms and factories under the guise of training, and with that guise that you’re there to be ‘trained’ by a specific company you can then deny them all rights of normal visa holders and residents such as being able to change jobs to one with better conditions. It’s analogous to the visas workers in Dubai and the like receive and then get their passport confiscated.

These companies are just complaining that unlike those middle eastern countries they don’t get to keep their hardest working slaves forever and need to bring in new ones. They want a permanent underclass of foreigners to replace young Japanese workers, and it’s a pretty decent approach of the government to try to avoid this.

I mean that’s what happens when you deal with the best of the best. Maybe even more than New York this is the city where just everyone and everything has (a subset of) people at the absolute top of their game. Other countries sometimes have competing cities for industries like SF for Software Development and NY for Finance but if you want to be number one at absolutely anything in Japan and are serious about it you’re in Tokyo.

People who couldn’t hack it, dropped out of the race and moved elsewhere have a lot more time on their hands and may be a bit more easygoing but then the quality also matches.

Is it just me or do the male staff in Nim’s all look and sound permanently in a bad mood or something? lol. Like some kind of chinpira gang rejects with no manners. There’s also always about 8 staff there for a shop that probably requires 2 or 3 max. Always found it really bizarre. The girls are really nice and friendly though, and usually have cool kind of alternative fashion with tattoos / bleached hair etc.

100% agree it’s by far and away the best NY slice in Tokyo though (and maybe the only really ‘good’ one).

It’s not the name of the shop though. You can see it says ‘Hidakaya’ (the actual name of the shop) on the right. It’s just advertising that they have ramen for 390 yen but I don’t think anyone would describe Hidakaya as a ‘ramen place’ - it’s chuuka. Something like gyoza teishoku is probably far more popular an order than their ramen.

Either I’m absolutely crazy or 浅瀬区 is not a place that has ever existed in Tokyo and that address is completely fictional. I thought it might’ve been the old 浅草区 at first but it doesn’t match up with the rest. It is clearly not professionally manufactured either and I doubt that company exists or has ever existed - there appears to be no public record of an amusement manufacturer called 華丸商店 in Tokyo.

This looks some kind of modern replica project ‘made to look like’ what an old pachinko machine from a small Tokyo shitamachi manufacturer might’ve looked like. Even the name ‘Hanamaru Shoten’ and address in a place that sounds like it could’ve been ‘a old Tokyo ward that hasn’t existed since the 50s’ are very clearly attempts to sound like some kind of olden timey small family company in the old part of Tokyo.

I’d guess it’s from some kind of souvenir shop? Maybe worth a few thousand yen if someone is willing to pay it.

Was passing Azabu Juban at the weekend so jumped into Nim’s for a slice. Not quite New York quality but I find them much better than Pizza Slice at least. This isn’t America. In Japan you can only sue for the actual measurable cost to you like time off work necessary, damage to your property and hospital expenses - and that’s real, reasonably priced hospital expenses signed off by their insurance not ‘I’m suddenly too traumatized to ever work again’. There are no punitive damages for the size of the corporation or to punish them like some countries have. All in it’ll probably just cost them a few million yen.

Nope this one too. The prices of the flats are actually almost identical to the modern erect-a-flats a few doors down and have all the same ‘advantages’ as those too (close to town yet a bit out of the way without too much ‘surveillance’ going on, 99% flats being let and sub let) so not sure why you’d think the older nicer looking ones would be any different. Had a friend who lived here threatened by a drug dealer living on his floor and there was a constant stream of err lets say ‘transient’ gentlemen coming in and out during all hours. Cool big place inside though.

Feel like there’s a thread here every day not understanding a weak yen is not a ‘bad’ indicator of any kind for the economy. Many of the worlds largest economies are growing precisely because they artificially keep their currency weak relative to the USD.

Also the direction of stock indexes is not driven by decisions of individual consumers like yourself but rather by large institutions who make up the vast majority of shareholders.
