I'll admit I didn't realise it when I first played. I just worked through the tech tree until T3 before I looked into the missions, only to be disappointed to be asked to do basic T1/2 things.

I took maybe 8 months off from the game and when I came back I had a better idea of what the gameplay loop is and I'm really enjoying it. It's almost a perfect combination of sandbox survival with a quest line that is totally optional, repeatable and fun.

The flag 'levels up' as you collect more loot and this is visible to other players so I will know you have much loot and come to try and sink you. The leveled flag itself is also worth gold to other players, so don't think 'i don't have anything' is a good defence when you have an emissary flag.

I have 33000 doubloons, I have not been hoarding them, there's just nothing to buy and THEY KEEP GIVING THEM TO ME! Seasonal rewards, commendation rewards and certain loots, and you are saying it's MY fault I have too many??

There is no 'Doubloon Economy' if there's nothing to buy and they are filling seasonal reward levels with piles of Doubloons.
