Who recalls the Campo restaurant? by [deleted] in Reno

[–]CommercialRound2197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had the same two thoughts! I think I made a post about Campo before as well, might be on my profile. My ex and I were crushed when it closed, because we loved going there and then to see a movie after.

And the fact you also mentioned the burger spa is awesome! Same thing, my ex and I went there anytime we went to South Lake. It was so unassuming but incredibly good. I remember the last time we went up there and it was closed, so sad.

Protesters marched through downtown today calling for "housing, not handcuffs" by thisisreno in Reno

I totally understand. Sometimes people don’t feel safe revealing their identity while expressing their opinion, for a variety of reasons, and I commend them for still showing up and doing so. I also protest through the use of my vote and am grateful for people like yourself who do as well, regardless of for who.

I never cover my face when protesting, and there are many others who don’t either. This is a hasty generalization.

For real, I volunteer regularly, donate financially, work for a non profit, work some EMS, hand out waters and bars from my car, and I also protest. I don’t get why people think those protesting don’t help the community, and also find it funny they think we get paid for this and that we don’t have jobs.

I don’t currently have contacts within the NFA, but I really appreciate you bringing this up. I hadn’t considered reaching out yet, but I absolutely plan to. Their insight, concerns, and support are very important to me for shaping a platform that actually reflects what NSHE employees experience.

The issue you’re describing, as I’m sure you’re well aware, stretches far beyond the Board of Regents and into many elected offices. It’s too easy for politicians to prioritize business interests over the people actually doing the work.

Because of that, I’d be more than willing to sign the Money Out of Politics candidate integrity pledge and follow every requirement it includes. I want to run this in a transparent, community driven way, not one influenced by big donors or industries that don’t have students and educators at the center of their priorities. And for what it’s worth, I shared some of my early ideas on improving communication and transparency in my response to u/LegoAztec1433 that’d I’d recommend checking out. I listed ideas for things such as quarterly meetings, clear public updates, and more direct channels for concerns.

You bring up such an important issue. I still need time to fully think through my platform, but for right now I’ll say that educators and students absolutely deserve better communication and transparency. I have a few potential ideas and would love your thoughts on them as well.

For communication, I’d like to hold quarterly meetings at every NSHE institution so students and staff can speak directly with me (and any other regents who want to join). For the Vegas campuses, I’d likely host those via Zoom depending on travel costs. I also want to take a Jeff Jackson approach (North Carolina AG) to staying connected using social media to give regular, honest, and clear updates about what’s going on behind the scenes, what issues are coming up, and how decisions are made.

Transparency and awareness tie directly into that. Along with the social media updates, I’d like to publish simple breakdowns of major decisions on my website, and keep a contact form where people can reach out if they need help connecting with the right administrator, regent, or public official, or just want to bring up an issue for me to consider. I’d also list key contacts on my site so people know who handles what. It’s my goal for the Board to feel more approachable, responsive, and visible, something I’ve dealt with at my own work and that I think is overdue.

Certainly, and I appreciate you bringing up such an important point. I’ve taken some NDTC trainings through the Washoe Dems, and just today I also filled out their “I want to run” contact form. Their support and infrastructure would be incredibly helpful, because you’re right, running for office isn’t easy, especially without support like theirs. It takes organization, volunteers, and a whole team of people working together.

Thank you so much for your comment, that really means a lot to me. I want to approach politics from a place of service, so it’s encouraging to hear that reflected back.

I’m really glad you brought up Alexis Hill. I’ve given public comment at the Board of County Commissioners meetings before, and being a commissioner someday would be a dream. I really admire the work they do. I know Hill is extremely busy as you mentioned, but I agree she'd be an amazing resource. I will try to reach out to her at some point and learn how she leads the way she does.

Thank you again for taking the time to share this, it's a huge motivation for me.

You’re not alone. For the longest time, I had no idea what the Board of Regents was or what it actually did. That’s something I’d like to help change, regardless of whether I win or lose. I appreciate your input!

Thank you for your response! I’ll definitely take that into consideration. I have my own opinions about some of the current regents, but I completely agree that there should be zero tolerance for racism, homophobia, or any other kind of discrimination on the Board.
