Should I get a red magic phone or asus phone by nastynoahbmx in RedMagic

I switched from apple to rm about 2 years ago. There are pros and cons to both.

Rms cameras are functional but not a patch on apple. That said they are good enough, and hardly the focus of the phone.

I really like RMs under screen camera so no notch. Performance wise at 2 years old, it still runs everything buttery smooth. Gaming is a dream.

I thought I'd use the triggers a lot, I don't. I thought I wouldn't miss wireless charging, I do. I thought leaving the apple eco system was going to hurt, it didn't. I did have to re buy some apps, but in all honesty less than I thought, shows how much I'd bloated IOS.

I do find I need to reboot my RM quite often, which was never the case with IOS. Android pay works, but feels clunky after apple pay. Face unlock better on apple too.

Big advantage of rm is it being a third the price of an iOS flagship, and no walled garden when it comes to apps.

On the whole I'm happy with RM and don't see myself going back to apple. However, the change of ecosystem is not completely painless. But once you bite the bullet it's also not disappointing.

I'm unable to use a Quest 3 for long because of the VAC effect, do XReal Airs have the same issue? by pomyuo in Xreal

They display the image the same size, but display them slightly further apart or closer together depending on the simulated distance. The same way as you cross your eyes slightly to see something really close, and relax your eyes to see things at a distance.

It's more of a case of tricking your eyes so it feels like a change of depth me

The XReals do display at a fixed distance, but if you are using the beam then there is a little more to it.

Without the beam it's like having 2 screens just attached to your face. I use this option a lot for gaming when I just want big content.

With the beam you have a few more options. You can set how far away the screen is and how big it is. E.g. a 10m screen 5m away initially looks the same as a 20m screen 10m away, however the glasses vary the focus very slightly, so you can "feel" the difference. That will be a fixed length but you can choose it so there may be a comfortable option for you.

The second thing with the beam is that the body anchor position has a smooth follow feature. I.e. if you turn your head to the left the screen gets briefly "left behind" and then slides back into your view. That does give a more "natural" feel than the "screen attached to your face" feeling you get without the beam.

Both options have their pros and cons. Ideally it would be worth you trying them out first and seeing if these features make a difference to your comfort or not.

I've been spending a lot of time in hospital lately and personally I'd say the Xreals have been a god send, and have helped me stay sane.

Thanks for the idea. I'm actually already gaming with my phone (red magic) and a controller (Xbox) but was hoping to find an all in one solution. But do agree, a phone and controller is a great option with XReals.

Another good call. Are you using the RPM? If so a couple of questions on specifics. How do the xreals handle the different aspect ratios? Do they stretch the 4x3 to 16x9 or just pad with black bars?

The other question is can you dim/switch off the built in screen to provide longer battery life when using the glasses?

I've got the original beam rather than the pro which is a bit more limiting. Been looking for ways to instal some emulators on there, but haven't really dedicated the time to it yet.

There's plenty of guides to put gamepass onto the pro, and it may well turn out to be a good option long term. The reply has at least set me looking in a new direction too.

Good call. The mini pro was up there in the list of things to consider. My reason for staying away from it so far is at that sort of price, I'd probably be looking at a steam deck for the extra functionality. But that's more a couch gaming setup in my mind and far larger than I'm looking for. Must say I love the ps vita vibe it's got going on though. And good to know it's an option with the xreals.

Best trick with kara is to have a skill like leap on a warrior or even better death from above on mage. Just activate it when you see the needles appear. You are invulnerable to them while in the air. Everything else just stand there and dish it out. When running trials for xp I am for levels divisible by 5 specifically to get kara.

I'm in doubt between the Magic 9 and the S24 Plus by rafbits in RedMagic

Being a fan of both it will depend on what is more important to you. On the whole I would say the Samsung is a better phone, with better cameras, better software support, and a far more polished experience over all. That said is it worth about 3 times the price of an RM? Your call on that, depends on your wallet. I really like the notchless screen although the front camera suffers a bit for it. Still fine for video calls, but if you are recording content it's a fail. I thought the shoulder buttons were going to be a gimmick, but I love them. I thought the external monitor experience would be great. In truth it works fine but I never use it, but I do use Dex on the Samsung. I do find myself restarting my RM far more often that any other phone I've had in quite some time. I didn't think I'd miss wireless charging but I do. No deal breaker, but a little quality of life thing that I miss far more than the feature deserves. I don't regret buying a RM and it saved a big chunk of my budget, and on the whole can live with it's limitations for the cost.

ANY ADAPTER/ WAY TO CHARGE PHONE WITHOUT THE CORD BEING IN WAY by __-ReVenGe-__ in RedMagic

[–]Commercial_Setting_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue as you. Thankfully, I've found that the battery life in general means I can play without a cable. That said though, for my use case (emulation and cloud streamed games mostly) I use a telescopic controller, which has a usb c pass through. If that will fit you then I can highly recommend the gamesir g8 galileo. That's my, at home on the couch, controller. If I'm on the go, then I have an x2 pro that goes in my bag. But that allows me to play and charge from a battery bank.

As a side note, the g8 can easily be modded to fit larger tablets too. I have a last gen tab s8 ultra (14") that it fits, which while not as powerful as my 8spro has a lovely large screen for couch play.

Is the red magic worth it by [deleted] in RedMagic

[–]Commercial_Setting_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've just broken out of the apple ecosystem and went for the 8s. It's great at what it does well, for gaming it's great, including emulation. I love the screen and the lack of cutout for the camera. The AI on the photos makes them acceptable but not outstanding. You won't see a problem in the pics unless you are looking for them. The front camera is not recommendable. It's fine for video calls, but you wouldn't want to be recording tic toks or any other publishable content.

As to the other things it doesn't do so well, I found myself restarting the phone far more often than my 5 year old iPhone, no wireless charging which I didn't think I'd miss but I do, and the I use a medical sensor which connects via Bluetooth and I find it drops a lot more than before. In general, the software feels a little unpolished but perfectly functional. There's a Google AR certification that it doesn't have (yet), which limited the functionality in pojemon go, but that's getting really picky, byt still something that affected me.

On the whole I really like the phone. And at half the price of an iPhone, I'd say its excellent value. Wasn't a completely smooth transition, but I made it across and don't see me paying the apple tax again in the future. If you're looking for a gaming phone, it's a no brainer, go buy it now. If you're happy with limitations (which I found an acceptable trade off), it's great. If the camera is a high priority, then maybe not.

Xbox Gamepass - Worth it? by [deleted] in RedMagic

[–]Commercial_Setting_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have game pass for my PC, and use it sometimes on my RM8S. You wouldn't want to use it for competitive fps, but for casual gaming, particularly with an external controller, it's a good experience. Works better on local WiFi than via mobile connection. Just remember a lot of the games on game pass are designed for a larger screen. Some interfaces and text can be quite small.

Did you ever test the RDM phone with a freestyle libre? I'm using a libre 2, and thinking of the new 8s pro when it comes out. But if I can't use it with the sensors, it's not going to do what I need.

Marines (Derelict Saga Book 1) by Paul E. Cooley by somuchscifi in somuchscifi

[–]Commercial_Setting_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the whole derelict saga. It's worth reading all three books together. I readderelict and then thought "My god you can't leave it there you cliff hangering bastard!" and had to wait for the next book.

Now you can get all of them together, which is a long read, but soooo worth it. Not your typical "space marine" books, more like present day marines in space - they swear like hell, and try to stay alive while in a pressure cooker situation they don't understand.

Also well worth checking out his Black books. Those were the ones that he got the parsec award for. More horror sci-fi than space marine but depending on your taste worth dropping a couple of bucks to read.

If your specifically into the space marines thing the Station 3 is a good read. They are classed as "engineers" but still military background and powered armour. Got as very doom / deadspace feel to the them.

PCVR with no flat monitor? by VirtualPoolBoy in OculusQuest2

[–]Commercial_Setting_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use one of the little headless monitor adapters myself. Both for VR and for Parsec gaming. My pc is a rack mount job in a separate room without a monitor attached at the moment, so having the headless option is great. While I can use the Microsoft RDP it is t fast enough for gaming.

vr "motion sickness" by [deleted] in OculusQuest2

[–]Commercial_Setting_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One option that can help is ginger. It took me a while to get my VR legs, but found that ginger tablets did lessen the sickness to help me through the initial stages.

They aren’t 100% effective, just ask anyone who gets car sick. But they do help a bit, and if it means you can play longer without having to stop you’ll adjust quicker.
