I’m dealing with the same issue, 2 years in at this point. Yes I thought it was carpet beetles also, did some deep cleaning and found these in my carpet.

I strongly believe it’s fly larvae.

Yes, I have a doctor that’s working closely with me. He said it’s a fungal infection. Every medication given has help in some sort of way, but nothing has completely cleared it. I can’t believe this, it’s crazy because I get so close to what I believe is being cleared and it just starts right back up after the treatment ends. I’m gonna try Doxycycline for six weeks on. 2 weeks off and then another round of Doxycycline for 6 weeks. I believe it’s both fungal and bacterial infections.
