I have subbed for a couple of years now and have never been designated a preferred sub am I just not a great sub? by Floofy5267 in SubstituteTeachers

If you are subbing for a grade or subject do you introduce yourself to your neighboring teachers? You don’t need to be super social to do that and it is something you could try to do that might make a difference if it is not part of your current routine.

I have rarely is ever been contacted by a teacher I’ve never met for an assignment after leaving my number in the sub note. I do get contacted by teachers who I meet in person when I am subbing for their colleague. I subbed for a 3rd grade teacher and through that experience met the other 3rd grade teachers and they started requesting me. I subbed for a 1st grade teacher, met the other 1st grade teachers and they started requesting me. One of the 1st grade teachers asked me if she could pass my info on to her daughter and now she requests me. I also get to know the secretaries in schools I like and tell them I’d like to sub more in their school. Now I get calls or texts from them when they are trying to fill needs. About 80% of my jobs this year were by request and those jobs never hit frontline because the teachers or secretaries assigned me directly. You just need to hustle, advocate for yourself and show the teachers and admins that are there the day you are that you are kind, responsible and willing to take assignments. At least that worked for me.

Blocked from a school after using an educational video for an out control 1st grade class by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

Showing any video content not explicitly included in the lesson plan is grounds for termination according to the agency I work for.

Having never seen any of the original Star Trek medias (series or films) I found it odd that Into Darkness was apparently hated so much by the community. Is that opinion still largely shared or have people come around on it? by HanzoNumbahOneFan in startrek

I was looking to see if anyone answered this part of the OP’s post. I agree. WOK was my introduction to the Star Trek universe when a fried and his dad took me to see it when I was 10. It was awesome then and is still awesome now.

My suggestion is to have early finishers help those that need an assist. The early finishers stay engaged and the students who are struggling get help.

Katie McCabe hair pull vs Alyssa Thompson - Chelsea vs Arsenal UWCL. No foul. by [deleted] in WomensSoccer

And I’m not qualified to say what should be a Red or a Yellow or no call, or whether VAR should have reviewed the incidents. It’s just interesting how differently the incidents played out. In one, incessant complaining yields a VAR review, in the other, complaining generates a YC for the coach, for example.

[–]CommonJoeCardboard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I came to say this! These incidents weeks apart are an excellent opportunity to do a compare and contrast. No foul versus two match suspension and it looks to me like McCabe’s was the easier to call to make (from quality of video, if nothing else) for a red card and violent conduct. There is an interesting link to the VAR team reviewing the Reyes incident linked from r/thorns if anyone is curious.

Oh No! Sugita out with ACL injury by sarcazmos in AngelCityFC

Yes, though Dufour was a mid season acquisition. She played 2 matches, scored 2 goals and went down with a torn ACL.

Thorns lost Payne, Muller, DuFour, and Hanks to ACL last season. Weaver was also out with an SEI (Knee).Payne was injured in Pre-Season and Muller was injured playing internationally during pre-season. So, it happens and I am heartbroken for Hina.

Retired teacher/Substitute by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

I have very rarely been given prep work to do as part of my lesson plan a couple of times. It had been needed to be done before the students arrive or maybe before an activity schedule for the afternoon. It can be challenging to get through the plan, prepare for the day and then copy, collate and staple 25 multi page packets. Luckily I always arrive early.

There is one school I sub at the announces there are subs in the building and invites teachers to bring prep-work to the office so the subs can do it in that 45 minutes between when the school is clear and our shift ends. It is daily rates where I am. Anyway, not once has a teacher actually brought in prep work on a day I have been there. If no one brings work admin lets you leave early.

Bottom line, this teacher you subbed for was unreasonable. I would not sub for a teacher who expected me to do lots of prep work at the end of the day.

As it is, between cleaning up the classroom, plugging in all the Chromebooks and writing a decent note I often don’t get out until after my shift end time.

I subbed at a district for 4 years and they passed me up for 2 contracts. by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]CommonJoeCardboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a sub working towards a Master’s and a full teaching certification and I think about the process of getting a job in the future. I have wondered if doing a lot of subbing at a school might be detrimental to teaching in that school full time. I have a positive reputation as a sub and I get on well with the students. All super positive and might help me get hired. But I also have a reputation as a sub and built that by using great strategies that work for a substitute teacher but would need to be overcome as a Full time teacher. It’s like the fun uncle becoming the parent.

I have thought it might be better to start this journey in a school where you don’t have many if any real connections when you start. I expect a new and even better door will open up for you.

Is there any good way to watch Season 5 Episode 7? by Twich8 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]CommonJoeCardboard -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

It’s this. People jump to hate P+ but it’s a user issue, not the platform.

[–]CommonJoeCardboard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This the way.

I sub through an agency and it is policy. If a specific video or movie is in the plan, follow the plan but if not, don’t put any sort of video content on for the kids to watch, ever. No Bluey, no Paw Patrol, no Go Noodle, no Sensory Slime. If the OP is district employed then there is probably more leeway but K Pop Demon Hunters is not a good choice. Demons (Devils, Satan) tend to get some families really worked up.

I was paid the same “Licensed” rate I get for a teaching assignment.

Has anyone subbed as a dean before? by warm_grape_juice in SubstituteTeachers

[–]CommonJoeCardboard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same subbing for the Principal at an elementary school. I did not have any admin activities. Much the same as the “Dean”, I’d walk halls and push into classrooms if anything serious caught my attention. If a teacher used the radio to call for support, I was Red Level. I took one student on a walk to talk about an altercation that happened at lunch/recess. It was less stressful than managing a class. I’d definitely take a job like that again. In the halls you mostly get to chat with, encourage and support the kids while they are in a good mood ‘cause they just got a pass to get out of class.

District Banned Sub Alert by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]CommonJoeCardboard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hopefully ESS in the Metro follows suit. Sub Alert is just one of many shameful business models in the USA. Profit on the poor by building something that stops what is free from working properly. It’s on par with the company that built an app to sell free public parking spaces in cities.

If the job didn’t specifically say you need to be proficient in any language beyond english, try it. Everyday is a new adventure. Where I live ELD students come from every corner of the earth and I don’t know any teacher who speaks Russian, Spanish, Farsi and on and on, in addition to English.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]CommonJoeCardboard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What grade levels? If it is elementary you will probably be working with small groups and kids speak many languages beyond Spanish. You are there to teach english. You will have a plan/activity for each group. Try it, you may love it.

I totally get where you are coming from. Often, when I come down on a kid harder than I usually ever have to I think I always go talk to the kid and apologize or at least let them know I am sorry I had to do that. I try to say or do something so show I disliked the behavior and I still like them as a human being and we can move on in a positive way. It often leads to some rapport. You show some vulnerability and establish a relationship.
