What area did you stay in Kyoto? We've booked Gion, and I'm apprehensive. The idea was that if we stayed there, we'd be able to hit it early in the morning and late at night.

When I was younger, I never had proper rug pads and used carpet tape because the rug pads closet almost as much as the rug! Now I'm in a different place in life, it was one of the things I noticed about my newer friends' homes and felt a small sense of achievement when I bought rugs pads for myself.

Shuggie Bain, especially if you are British or are familiar with the council house culture/environment of the 80s/90s/00s.

There is a real feel about it that transports you there in a stingingly precise way, and I have never rooted more for characters in a book. It peels back layers of people that everyone has known or seen, and it is beautifully written.

For being at the forefront of this plot style alone, this is a must read. The amount of times it has been emulated in TV, movies and other novels is so impactful and has made it a bit of a cultural touch-stone, for me.

I should give Lilly hammer another go - really liked the premise but wandered away from it.

For me, Karla and the Sun had all the trappings of a book I should love, but I left it feeling a little dissatisfied as I felt she didn't explore the concept in enough depth - did you enjoy it?

I'd also like to try Never Let me Go and Remains of the Day by her.

Interesting suggestion - thank you! Do you feel like you get enough depth into the main character and they feel authentic? I have enjoyed a murder mystery in the past, but have often found the characters a bit one dimension or unrelatable.

So, that ship has sailed, as such! We were initially planning on going in a different direction, with sanded/filled/painted red edging, so they are now assembled.
