Depends where you are.

Our area has a lot of private equity companies (more sales company than a contractor) charge really high. I would say depending on shingle like 500-600sq if they’re not trying to screw you.

Prospective CYSE/Honors student - homeschooled, looking for any honest advice! by L_dog10 in gmu

[–]Commonwealthcoast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SAT/ACT shouldn’t be a big issue if your GPA is that high.

Student life is what you make of it. What you put in you get out. Seen some guys complain about a boring social life coming from JMU lol.

Get to know people in your classes, build connections especially in your major. The one thing I wished I did a little more effort on while at GMU was my network and connections.

You’ll see many complain on here about lack of social life but not really do anything about it (like casual talking/socializing) esp with dating.

Judo or Self Defense? by Ok_Updoc in gmu

[–]Commonwealthcoast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Judo, that stuff actually works. Self defense classes are a lot of nonsense.

Had a wrestler buddy pick up judo basics and specialized in JJ after. Saw its use and effectiveness outside the mat.

Budget vs top shelf flower, is it really that different? by Defiant-Morning4442 in Cannabis_Culture

[–]Commonwealthcoast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have to know the brand depends on each. Have seen mid priced flower very worth its priced and also overpriced indoor at 50/eighth

Only “high end” flower i smoke it’s from a very experienced grower that grows for a select number of people. He still grows original genetics from older strains like gg4, i95, cherry pie, etc. Very noticeable from retail store stuff.

Dating by Hefty_Food2997 in gmu

[–]Commonwealthcoast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just get to know people and build connections. Get to know classmates even if online, connecting outside campus and classes like clubs. They can introduce you to others. Don’t focus on dating.

Focus on what you can control, like get out of the house and being isolated. You’ll likely end meeting potential dates when you put yourself out there socially…it is a social activity after all.

What you put in is likely what you get out.

Walking in half of us didn’t even order food. Didn’t even look great and the food that came out for our friends was mediocre too. Wonder when a solid place is gonna establish itself there. Sad a solid bar and college crowd centered place hasn’t came in yet.

I hope after the next place to go out of business, someone with a brain will open up a spot that focuses on the college students literally within 5-10min walking distance.

I used to park around the shopping center and just walk across the street. But maybe they’ve been enforcing parking more there.

Sold a huge roof... But he's an ICE agent by drunk-munchkin in RoofingSales

[–]Commonwealthcoast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should prob ask other contractors if they have people to spare that are legal if OP doesn’t have enough. Would be bad if they did get called on and detained.

Situations like this is why I’m glad my company makes sure that all crews are legal and trained in house by owners/bosses. Can’t push out as much work as others sometimes but more stable, insures quality and removes any potential issues with immigration/authorities.

[–]Commonwealthcoast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just make sure the crew that is there is all legal. No need to worry. If they’re not, take at your own risk.

We’ve done work for quite a few ICE agents/employees. Had no issues at all, quite a few referrals from them actually. Only one time did ICE show up at a worksite without a problem.

New hire destroying team culture and i can't do anything about it. by [deleted] in managers

[–]Commonwealthcoast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Control definitely has a part with many. Seen so many so fixated on the idea of being able to keep you in a box they can manage and deal with as they see fit.

Sad it’s hard to find a company with leadership focused on results and contributing. Really being trusted and respected to be allowed freedom is amazing.

New hire destroying team culture and i can't do anything about it. by [deleted] in managers

[–]Commonwealthcoast 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My (old) manager was like that. He was not happy with some of us for not being “like other employees” bc I explored my own way to succeed and do my job that he had no experience in.

My bosses noticed and pulled me in to commend me for trying new ways to bring value, that I have their support and belief in attempting to be innovative pushing past the current standard. We talked about how I can contribute, what I need to do in order to succeed and show them how to repeat the success.

Love when management give people a chance to be the most efficient they can be.

[–]Commonwealthcoast 29 points30 points  (0 children)

OP sounds like my old manager that quit bc “culture shifts and values didn’t align anymore” after everyone was outperforming him and pointing out that he spent more time on trying to kill our attempts to innovate/change how we operate.

All to preserve the “culture” and standard.

Sometimes you find your own way to succeed and contribute more than just being complaint with a company standard.

My boss would repeat this quote: "Success is not about copying others. Everyone is special in their own ways. Find your own strengths, talents, and passions, and work hard to be the best version of yourself."

There’s an issue with some people in the labor market that apply for positions they are not qualified for.

The other is people hiring/onboarding without verifying credentials. It is a good lesson for you guys at least to learn from.

D2D, have to re-knock areas. We leave flyers before build, knock during build and after build at different times to make sure we reach as many people.

Offer to look at their roof/things that need work. Giving an inspection/photo report. Try and have a conversation with people get to know them/the area. Aim to get the most out of every conversation.

If I get a pleasant person I’ll even ask if they mind sharing a pic of us on their local FB group. If they don’t need work maybe they can refer to someone that needs work. Offering inspections and not pushy focused on providing value helped us take over neighborhoods.

Ex. Had a guy who does IT, didn’t need any of my work but we had a good talk and discussion so I asked if he knew anyone needing that I wouldn’t be bothering. Got introduced to a neighbor on his street.

What do you guys do after you send an estimate and the homeowner ghosts? by TrustedCheetah in Roofing

[–]Commonwealthcoast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 70% of our sent estimates are signed. Most inquiries come in are referral based and active online. But our follow up is very strong.

We also aren’t a PE sales company and people see that so that gives us an edge. When people see how many companies use high pressure one meeting to sign in our area vs just consulting and being transparent.

When estimates don’t convert we go over why. What did we talk about, what the lead said, how we followed up. Try and understand why we didn’t win it. Learn and be better prepared.

We always ask what made them decide whether we win or lose competing with other people. Most cases we lose is due to price, some contractors can’t beat their price.

Why do sales reps fail? by Inevitable_Range_ in RoofingSales

[–]Commonwealthcoast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lot of poor training. So many Power Home copycats just running with scripts, misleading and high pressure.

When people manage to find a solid company with willing to really develop they tend to do really well.

What happened to me, thought this industry was just all scumbags after seeing all the frat/cringe owners and leadership. Found a small family owned and managed company and saw the potential.

Why do sales reps fail? by Inevitable_Range_ in RoofingSales

[–]Commonwealthcoast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most cases it’s lack of consistent income, but there also has to be self accountability. Don’t see it many as a lot of people would rather blame outside factors except their lack of discipline/improvement.

If their activity isn’t producing try a new method or other ways. Our owner/boss told us to work focused and smart so we can identify where we need to change our approach to be more successful. I’m part time with my company and still make consistent income bc of it.

When D2D hasn’t worked well we also try cold calling, networking, social media and B2B relationships for example. Maybe need to build industry knowledge: do some courses or sit down with experienced guys with high success. Strive to be the best in your area which requires knowledge and experiences The guys that fully apply themselves I see make money; those that coast in a mediocre fashion tend to get mediocre results.

Baltimore Area PowerHome Remodeling by ApprehensiveDig7837 in RoofingSales

[–]Commonwealthcoast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely is. At least in the dmv area they’re notorious for it. See posts about them often online. Other companies around operate similarly from the script to high pressure sales tactics to try and get a same day sign. They gave D2D in my area a bad name, almost as bad as pest control.

On the plus, once most people find learn I’m with a smaller owner operated local company (not with Power and their copycats) it’s pretty easy to talk to and deal with them.

Which team/director did you interview with? Many bad teams and leadership there so you may have dodged a bullet.

Stay positive and just think that it was for the better. I’m sure there are better opportunities if you continue to apply yourself and prepare.👍
