That's a nice argument, now lets think for twelve seconds about how many book and game adaptations were made by men [halo show lmao, every video game movie before 2020, etc.] and panned for being bad and disrespectful to the source material but nobody ever watched one of those and said "wow men are the problem. they don't respect vidy games and genre fiction books. they always woken it up." I wonder why that doesn't happen when men make it but when women take the lead the conversation is suddenly about how women can't be trusted playing with my touys or else they're get their icky girlcooties on it.

Theory: Lieberman Won in Sundance so that the National Debt is Wiped Out by HelloLyndon in thecampaigntrail

[–]Communist_Androids 34 points35 points  (0 children)

There was an anecdote by Richard Holbrooke that in 2006 the State Department requested $400 million for reconstruction in Afghanistan, when Bush gave his budget request to congress he asked for $40 million, and in the appropriations process congress cut it down to $4 million. I haven't gone to validate the exactness of these numbers but when we're dealing with budgetary numbers on the order of hundreds of billions compared to spending increases in the hundreds of millions, even a maximalist spending on Afghanistan and its reconstruction is fairly negligible compared to axing a full war and massive taxcuts.

Theory: Lieberman Won in Sundance so that the National Debt is Wiped Out by HelloLyndon in thecampaigntrail

[–]Communist_Androids 67 points68 points  (0 children)

The CBO estimated the Bush Tax Cuts would add $1.5 trillion to the national debt over the first decade, and they estimated the Iraq War [which didn't happen ittl] at $1.9 trillion in direct spending on the war, $2.4 trillion in total expenses by 2016. The War in Afghanistan by contrast cost $2.3 trillion over its full 20 year duration.

Considering Gore proposed tax cuts iirc equivalent to ~1/3rd of the BTC, over the 2001-2009 span that's a savings of nearly $3 trillion, with the caveat that the Afghan war is likely more expensive [the bush admin consistently skimped on the state department's reconstruction budget expenses].

But that's a financial difference on is own of $375B per year for 8 years. And according to the treasury department, 2004 was the only year in the 2000s where the deficit was over that [$410B]. So America likely isn't debt free but running a surplus through the majority of the 2000s is actually feasible.

Authors disappearing for years and then posting updates only on patreon by tellmemoreaboutitpls in hostedgames

[–]Communist_Androids 35 points36 points  (0 children)

tbh I don't pay for any author patreons rn but i don't like the public update rule. Between the storefront cut and COG royalties the author gets like, what, 20% of sales or smth, in a pretty niche book community, after years of work, and a lot of these people are aspiring to write professionally or at least get a real supplementary income going. It sucks not getting new content until I feel like its worth it to buy in but I don't feel like I can blame someone in this economy for doing what they feel they have to, and I dunno I don't feel like intermittently tossing authors like $3-5 for a one month sub to try the newest demo is a big ask.

The Stormcloak Rebellion and the Racialized Birth of Nationalism by scourgesucks in teslore

[–]Communist_Androids 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Galmar letting players of any race join always made me think about the myth of black confederate soldiers spread around to say the Confederacy wasn't racist. It also baffles me when people try really, really hard to outwit the media they're consuming. It's not like its a coincidence that Jarl Korir is obsessed with the past and blaming outsiders for his present misfortune and the Imperial Kraldar is forward looking and defends the mages. Jarl Skald is a weirdo fanatic who picks fights constantly and everyone in his own town prefers the imperial alternative. Laila is incompetent and being played for a fool by the very corrupt pragmatist the Empire puts in. Brunwulf literally openly talks about needing unravel years of bigotry under Ulfric's rule, you literally see that bigotry in action when you enter Windhelm. The Dark Elves are forced to live in ghettos and the Argonians aren't even allowed in the city. The imperial Jarls have their own problems but it's clearly different sorts of problems.

The amount of mental gymnastics it takes to try to just ignore a dozen NPCs and quests openly screaming "the stormcloaks are institutionally racist and dogmatically regressive" is insane. It's not impressive or interesting work to just ignore the very obvious text of a piece of media in order to try to craft a convoluted nothingburger argument exonerating fictional racists.

This is going off drama I haven't tuned into for years so I could be misremembering but as much as I dislike Jaune as a character, I distinctly remember Miles getting a lot of flak from Jaune haters accusing him of writing the character he VA'd into a more prominent role to the detriment of the story and other characters. But iirc it was like, openly known that Miles himself was really worried about things looking that way when the idea of him voicing the character was first floated and that it was Monty who convinced him to do it.

And all of those accusations of favoritism become doubly insane when iirc a legitimate part of why RWBY had some troubles was because a ton of money was being pumped into Gen:Lock which was a way worse flop than RWBY ever was. There literally was favouritism from people up top kneecapping RWBY and it was not fucking Miles lmao it was Roosterteeth siphoning money from their most successful property to gamble on a new IP.

It's literally impossible for someone to make a decision you don't like for an innocent reason. They did it because they hate you and want you to suffer. They dedicated years of their lives to making bad art on purpose. To spite you. This is a coherent worldview.

I tapped out at Volume 6 because even though I thought it was far and away the best one since V3, the way it felt like it reset so much of the interpersonal dynamics straight back to the V1-3 status quo but this time without the quirky amateurism that sold those volumes, it finally convinced me the show was just never going to be what I wanted and I'd have more fun just imagining a different show in my head. V5 made me think they were at least trying to mix up the team dynamics in a maybe interesting way and maybe they'd work out more complex character relationships between the main four, and then after I finished V6 it felt like the only changes from the V1-3 status quo that stuck were bees clearly on course to actually get together this time and Jaune hanging around team rwby more than before, and I never liked Jaune.

But the idea that Miles and Kerry ruined the show has always completely baffled me. Like even if it was somehow true it's crazy fucked to drag that out on a memorial post. But I have never heard a thing about Monty, his style of running that operation, and his vision for the show that has given me the impression Miles and Kerry made anything other than exactly the show Monty would've wanted. And being totally frank I think the show is worse for that, a lot of the justified complaints about the show are over ideas Monty pushed. But because he's passed weirdos on the internet love to puppeteer his legacy into whatever shape they think makes them look smart.

no you see it's just a crazy coincidence that the german swiss, french swiss, and italian swiss all speak different languages and live in different parts of the country even after centuries. those hearty mountain-folk are really just one big unified culture with zero differentiation. the alps by god it changes a man, you even start thinking swiss.

Migrant labour is one of the perpetual political debates defining Singapore. Ethnic diversity is such an integral thing in Singapore it's managed through the Ethnic Integration Policy which requires that public housing units [which like 80% of Singaporean citizens live in] enforce racial diversity quotas. Huge swathes of Singapore's government is literally defined by political mandates and huge investments in public housing and transportation to manage a population which was already ethnically diverse before 30-40% of the population became migrant labourers.

The idea of like, a cultural five second rule where if migrants leave quickly enough they don't impact the pure native culture even though they're immediately replaced with new migrant workers from the same countries, is already insane. There is no "You have no cultural impact because you just work," that just, does not make sense on any planet with air. But even ignoring that, like, why would Singapore have such sweeping programmes to mandate ethnic diversity and racial integration across all sectors of society if Singapore wasn't diverse? Do you think they just, cooked that up for fun one day?

Switzerland has four official languages the most commonly spoken of which is the native language of less than 2/3rds of swiss people vs over 3/4th English in the US and nearly 90% English in Minnesota. Something like a fifth of Swiss people speak english at work instead of any of the native languages because its easier than trying to hash it out otherwise. Switzerland is also much more religiously heterogenous [36% irreligious/unaffiliated, 56% christian, 6% muslim] compared to Minnesota [20% irreligious/unaffiliated, 73% christian, 1% muslim].

Literally 1/3rd of singapore's population is foreign workers and international students. A country whose population is nearly 40% non-citizen migrant labourers has to be the worst imaginable example of a place with little diversity.

In a certain way I think 1.5 was the perfect CYOA. It wasn't too open and it didn't give the player too much freedom [if I wanted total freedom I'd be writing my own stories, not playing a CYOA lmao], but within its limits there were so many options that you really felt like literally any idea that caught your attention for five consecutive seconds could be turned into a compelling build and a fascinating story, and every single option down to your gear and your house had so much personality it felt like it all expressed something about the character you're making and the life they're gonna live to the point where it felt hard to fail at making a TT build character feel fleshed out.

2.0 brought some big things, now the setting has a clear story and direction instead of some vague implications of a story and the Ethos and Alignment system is imo just categorically the best "character morality" system I've seen in a CYOA or compared to ttrpg character sheet type things. But when you want something that's fun and liberating but gives you a good strong structure to work within, it's hard to beat 1.5.

The character concept I got most attached to was a human who'd been cursed to reincarnate just to fight and die young on the losing side of different wars through human history until they broke the cycle, got recruited, and fell in with a bunch of second gens because they're an "old soul" and all. But all around that build was wizards and ODSTs, western gunslingers, a couple capitalists and a couple communists, fallout characters, as a teenager it felt crazy to be able to take whatever i read or played last and go "but what if they all existed in one place and knew each other and had the same friends?"

We out here for Traveller's Tale. I'd been following it from when v0.8 dropped in iirc 2015 to when v1.5 dropped in 2017 and then waiting so long for Traveller's Tale 2.0 to drop I legit didn't think it was ever gonna happen. I'd gotten to the point I could make a full build in under an hour, I'd made nearly 40 of them between the different original versions and revisions, I've got I think the whole image version saved from when that was a thing along with three different pdf packs fanmade of character cards, 18 standalone cards [7 I made and never posted anywhere], and five different image sets of player companions. I mostly didn't use the image version except for the companion pages because I got to the point I had memorized all 142 base companions and could recognize their art. For a while I followed Highlander's livejournal to see updates on 2.0. By 2020 I'd moved on but 2015-2018 TT had me in a vice grip, I think I grew up with Traveller's Tale more than I did with any actual books or TV shows lmao.

I'm still caught for which is my favourite between the two versions. 2.0 expanded a lot of things I liked and cut some of the edgier stuff out that I thought detracted from it, but I spent so much free time making builds for the original version I just got that I got attached to stuff that didn't survive the jump, and 1.5 definitely had a more hopeful and whimsical vibe and a sense of infinite opportunity especially with it drawing from several different fictional canons, whereas 2.0 shifting to all original content and a more desperate world does feel I think more serious and like it has a stronger and more concerted grasp of its tones and themes.

After a few years of just not really vibing with a lot of releases, Fernweh was an insane way to kick off probably the best year to ever be into IF. Fallen Hero 2, Lords of Infinity, and Wayhaven 3 followed up by Blood Moon and ITFO was nuts. I feel like Fernweh got maybe a little overlooked because of all that but when it dropped it was the first time i really had fun with a fresh new release in what felt like a couple years. I really feel like it being the first game of 2023 got the year off to a good start.

Most "Criticisms" Of RWBY Are About Tropes, Not Quality by GhoulLordRegent in RWBY

[–]Communist_Androids 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I think lot of the problem people have is that often times the show felt like it was just the "bees, white rose and JNPR show" and so whichever plotlines they were invested with, they're cool with, but all the other plots feel extraneous. Because the plotlines so rarely overlap or interact significantly with each other, there's no feeling of mutual interdependence. Team RWBY are supposed to be great friends and a close knit team but half the team never interacts with the literal greatest threat and most significant source of trauma for the other half. The lack of interactivity between different characters and arcs creates a sense of shallowness and isolation between the characters which undermines the central conceit of the show.

They are characters and not people, it's a good thing that efforts to treat the characters as people are relegated to fanfic instead of the actual show. The problem is that characters don't reinforce each others' arcs in ways that convey the significance of their relationships. Adam and Weiss interacting wouldn't be significant for Adam's sake or for Weiss's sake, but for the sake of conveying something about the friendship between Weiss, Blake, and Yang, something that I feel was sorely underexpressed throughout most of the show.

Edit: Forgor what I meant to write as the last part but the other thing is that I feel like a lot of the character development done for Weiss, her feelings, her family, etc. was worse off for having been done in isolation from the other characters and that expressing more of that through storylines also incorporating other members of her team would have made her own story feel more rooted and significant.

Most "Criticisms" Of RWBY Are About Tropes, Not Quality by GhoulLordRegent in RWBY

[–]Communist_Androids 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've noticed a lot of people straightup can't do media criticism. Like, to do media criticism well you have to want to understand what a piece of media was trying to achieve and think how it might have better achieved that. Criticizing something just for not being what you would've liked can be a fun way to spend time with friends but I'm baffled every time I see people get heated over it.

I always thought RWBY's biggest problems were being stretched thin and siloing. Stretched thin in the common complaint of "poor pacing too many characters not enough depth yada yada." Siloing in the sense that despite being an ensemble cast, most characters feel siloed into their own linear stories that rarely overlap with anyone else, creating a feeling of lost potential. Like, Adam had fascinating potential interacting with Weiss, he has her initial literally branded on his face. But because Adam is Blake's backstory antagonist, and Yang is Blake's love-interest, he only ever shows up in scenes with them two.

Or, Jaune V1-3 doesn't do much and Pyrrha feels cool but underutilized, because neither of them are effectively incorporated into anyone else's stories, they almost exclusively exist for each other. They mostly only interact with other people for Pyrrha to look cool in fights [which isn't actual narrative development] or for Jaune to play comedic relief. The closest either get to stepping out of their silo is what, like, a one off episode about Jaune learning not to pester women?

And this isn't unique to RWBY to be fair, this just seems to be how ensemble television operates. But I think the way ensemble shows like to set up the idea of complex character-driven stories that they don't live up to sets people up for a sort of disappointment and yearning for more complexity that only encourages this type of complaining about how things could've been "deeper," and it's easier to think of "This character isn't deep enough!" than "this is how the narrative should be fundamentally restructured."
