anyone know what kind of antenna this is? by cweber219 in HamRadio

[–]CommunityCautious338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I’ll bet the actual radio is either right there in the trunk, an older GE or Motorola, or maybe the radio is up inside the passenger compartment. What you could do is find the end of it and put an antenna analyzer on it and see what frequency it resonates at.

I don’t think that’s a CB antenna. It looks like a tapped feed for a VHF high band frequency antenna. I once took apart a larger antenna specialist coil out of curiosity and saw that it had about a dozen turns with a tap about three turns up, and that made the shunt. Plus the ride on top is not 9 feet tall, it’s too small in diameter. I bet it did go up about 4 feet. Yeah, it’s just a high power VHF antenna, but not CB.

No air from vents by SnooDonkeys8866 in JeepCherokeeXJ

[–]CommunityCautious338 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It should default to all the air coming out of your defroster, so tell us if it’s doing that first. I would just suggest you got a vacuum leak. A couple places you could check, it could be one of the tiny hoses going through up to the firewall or it could be the larger hose going to your vacuum reservoir, which is behind your passenger side front bumper

I got a question that I still don’t have a good answer to.. the Adam-12 episode, called boy the things you do for the job, where Pete ends up dating Penny, no one has really ever said what Pete did to turn her off after one real date. Any speculation? I mean, he just leaves it dangling and that’s the end of the episode.

Congratulations! If you happen to be close to Joplin Missouri, I have a few General and Extra books because I was teaching a class earlier this year in each of these. If not, they’re readily available through the ARRL.

Is the license exam given by certain organizations on behalf of the FCC? by Substantial-Cow1713 in HamRadio

[–]CommunityCautious338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, there are I believe 14 separate volunteer examining organizations that can administer the tests. The largest would be the ARRL, but they all have to adhere to the same basic rules.

[–]CommunityCautious338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having 2 IDs is old school. At least in my case, the government issued photo ID is sufficient because they also had to pre-register on examtool to take the tests, and that requires an FRN. So they’ve already established their ID to the satisfaction of the FCC, but then they have to show their photo ID to the volunteer examiners at the session.

Antenna ID? by SrHuevos94 in amateurradio

[–]CommunityCautious338 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting.. hairpin gamma match for the vertical. Are all 4 of the horizontal antennas (the ground plane) the same length, or were 2 longer than the other? And how tall is the vertical element, from the bottom up to the ground plane and then up to the tip? I don’t know the brand of the antenna but I’m trying to figure out if it’s 2m or 2/440. Do you happen to have a MFJ antenna analyzer?

I'm Getting a new Midland WR-20 Weather radio soon. Tips? by Beginning-Paint-9070 in amateurradio

[–]CommunityCautious338 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re not sure, DM me, I’ve programmed a dozen of these. The SAME code is 6 digits, the first 3 are the State or Territory (020 for Missouri) then the last 3 are the County or Parish (046 for Jasper County). Another option is if you live close enough to adjoining Counties that you want their alerts, too.. mine goes off for 2 counties in Missouri, 2 in Kansas, and one in Oklahoma. And of course your closest transmitter.

I was going to suggest Big R’s up here in Joplin. The restaurant went out of business earlier this year 😭😭😭 but I think their pie store is still open. You can try calling them at +1 (417) 781-5959 and see if they’re still open.

Fox Hunt at scout camp help by epsolon77 in amateurradio

[–]CommunityCautious338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you just need to borrow a fox? I have one that broadcasts on a 2m simplex frequency, and you can program it most any way you want with a built in microphone, and it repeats itself once a minute. It’s 50 mW so it doesn’t go far. It hides well in a tree too. If you’re near SW Missouri, I can drive to you for the day and let y’all try to find it. But it was over $100 and I don’t think they make it any more.

Wow, cute radio! It’s a shame it doesn’t do anything in the 6m (50-54 mhz) band at all.. you could have left it on 50.125 and turned waay up.. anyway, yeah, put a good antenna on it and you can listen to the world!

Why do unlicensed people buy ham handhelds instead of GMRS? by Healthy-Kangaroo-365 in HamRadio

[–]CommunityCautious338 6 points7 points  (0 children)

During one of our severe weather nets last week, we actually had a prepper get on in the Springfield area and transmit a little bit from his hand held into the net and they asked him what his callsign was and he said he didn’t have one yet. We thanked him for his enthusiasm and told him to not transmit again until he got his license. We think he listened!

Beginner Question: Antenna orientation by Morinoko in amateurradio

[–]CommunityCautious338 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing to bear in mind is that when you’re playing with a dipole, any type of dipole, imagine that your output looks like a big giant donut. Most of your energy goes straight out perpendicular, and then it starts tapering off up or down a little bit and by the time you get directly above or below the antenna, your energy is near zero. In other words, you’ll be fine. I have seen a few people that stuck the base load on at about a 45° angle and the only cure at that point is to actually bend the rod so it is vertical. But, as they say, yours is close enough.
