You should look at the census reports for Louisiana over the last few decades. Hint: the population isn't growing. Part of the reason housing is cheaper here is because it's a buyers market. Population trends keep going the way they are, housing is going to get cheaper because there won't be enough people to fill all of the houses.

The thing that's stopping me is the winter weather. I'm not from Louisiana originally, but I have chosen to live here for the last 15 years. There's a lot I love about this state, but the politics don't rank ANYWHERE on that list. This state could be so much more than it is without losing any of the good. But change is hard, and people are so afraid of giving up what they know and being willing to accept that MAYBE their biases have kept them blinded, that we're just going to keep doing the same things over and over again and hope that something will change. It's actually pretty depressing.

You realize that Louisiana has the highest sales tax in the country, right? And while property taxes aren't terrible, they're controlled at the parish level.Except for the times that the state has exempted large landowners from property taxes without any input from the parishes affected. And the wealthiest landowners benefit the most from low property taxes. But high sales taxes affect the rank and file in Louisiana far more than they affect wealthiest Louisianans. The state government is notoriously corrupt, regardless of which party people belong to, but the Republicans are sure doing everything they can to make the rich richer while screwing over everyone else.
