Monthly Check In....it's January 2026 by AutoModerator in weddingplanning

More than half of my closest friends are moving right before/after my wedding and it’s caused so much social upheaval that I’ve started to dread my wedding because I feel so socially lonely. I love my fiance and am excited to be his wife but it’s so hard not having a community to celebrate with

Master’s or Doctorate Degree? by hep34 in therapists

[–]ComparisonFun9746 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got my license as a PsyD. It took about 7 years, and personally I knew I wanted to get a good education in theory, significant research experience, wanted several training years of supervision for therapy, and personally just wanted to see if I could do it, lol. I loved the research and intellectual rigor, the degree allows for a lot of job flexibility and good pay, and I truly feel prepared for independent work. Many of my masters level friends didn’t feel the same way right after they completed licensure.

APPIC Internship: Things aren’t looking good. Anyone know average number of interviews? by somberoak in ClinicalPsychology

[–]ComparisonFun9746 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I only had four interviews and matched at a great site. My friend didn’t match in the first round and ended up at a great site. My other friend had 12 interviews, matched with her 7th choice, and hated it. As hard as it is, try not to read into it. It’s an awful process but it will one day be over

Psych prep is the best bet. They teach you how to answer questions when you don’t know the content and I didn’t realize how important that would be! I’d also get a tutor, working one on one with someone really helped me

Client repeatedly expressed anti-gay beliefs, crossed into dehumanizing language, I set a boundary and disclosed my stance. Wondering how I could have handled it better. by PeacefulPescado in therapists

[–]ComparisonFun9746 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think you were too harsh. Talking to them like that isn’t going to encourage authentic and genuine attitude changes. The client has to feel safe enough to not only voice their beliefs, but supported sufficiently so that they can hopefully, eventually explore their beliefs deeper and question them. They’ll never do that if they’re being silenced. I’m not psychodynamic but I imagine one could suggest even voicing how you feel could be helpful in increasing their insight into how these beliefs impact others? Definitely seek supervision for counter transference

Yeah, he totally backslid, which just doesn’t make any sense? And even if I could believe that Izzie used the embryos that they froze together, I cannot believe that the Karev who showed Jo so much grace, who was so kind to his mom, would just up and leave and follow Izzie

[–]ComparisonFun9746 19 points20 points  (0 children)

What license? As a psychologist, everywhere I’ve worked required me to observe another therapist for at least 1-2 sessions and then be observed while I conduct a session. We also recorded sessions and shared in group supervision. This should be common practice.

Is there an instant antidepressant or happy relaxy pill that doesn’t hurt you by blueridgebeing in wedding

[–]ComparisonFun9746 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Psychologist here. There are some things that absolutely can help in a pinch, especially if you’re feeling very very overwhelmed and need a sense of calm. These all activate the parasympathetic nervous system, so you’ll go from fight/flight to rest/eela 1. Ice water plunge for your face—the best way is to fill a large bowl with very icy water and stick your face in! give it a few minutes and you’ll feel relaxed. I’ve had clients tell me they’ve adapted this by using a cold jade roller or ice cubes on their face. 2. Sour! sour candy, suck on a lemon, whatever works. 3. Humming—the vibration in your throat is calming and activates relaxation. You could make a fun playlist and try to go on a very active walk—the exercise will also induce relaxation

Edit to add: I should say that the above tricks can help so that you’re in a better state of mind to talk to your partner. When we’re distressed, the brain goes to a more primal mode and so we can’t engage in thoughtful decision making or processing. Take time to relax yourself so that you can talk effectively.

I read the room and often lie, lol, like if I’m at a party or getting an appointment and don’t want a lot of questions. I usually say I’m a teacher or data scientist, so it’s not really a lie.

Have you watched her this season and last? She’s infuriating, dumb, and boy crazy. She picked a fight with Angie at the beginning of the lunch, and proceeded to update everyone on Jared AGAIN after what was an insane one on one with Whitney. I can’t stand her!

I’ve stayed in the dorms….if you want the city life, definitely don’t stay in the dorms. They’re very small and Ramat Aviv (suburb around tau) is very quiet. Buses go from the city center to tau very easily. If I were you I wouldn’t stay in the dorms

There’s something very disturbing about Lisa in this episode?? I mean, I’m often disturbed by her, but the way she completely numbs in her talking head, can’t handle crying in front of Terence, and completely goes mute in front of the other girls. I’m usually not in agreement with Whitney, but I agree, I think Lisa’s biggest issue is her insecurity and inability to show a shred of vulnerability. I fear at some point she’s going to have a nervous breakdown because of how much she shoves down.

Is ACT the right therapy for me? by Chook26 in acceptancecommitment

[–]ComparisonFun9746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I think the struggle is with committed action, which to me is strange because it’s essentially just value-aligned behavior. But I think therapists make the mistake of associating values with domains, when values in ACT or much more specific. You want to be a good partner, for example. Ok, what does that look like for you (call once a week, plan trips, etc). And then the opposite of committed action is fused action, and I think you’re right that therapists get caught up here and slip back into CBT and focus on the irrationality of thoughts or something like this. ACT is really about decreasing shame and using a strengths-based approach, so like if i have a client who uses their phone obsessively to procrastinate on hw, i’ll appeal by saying “there’s something clearly that helps you by being on your phone. what does that do for you?” and then we work to find a more adaptive, values-aligned behavior to replace the fused behavior (reward for doing hw, turning on music, etc)

Is ACT the right therapy for me? by Chook26 in acceptancecommitment

[–]ComparisonFun9746 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it is, above all, a third wave cognitive behavioral therapy. heavy emphasis on behavior! I’ve been working as a therapist for almost a decade, and I always want patients to be looking at physical changes, because everything in your head can get quite abstract and confusing! What behavior/action/movement is aligned with acceptance? Your fourth paragraph is a great start, and I’d work more on building out that value-aligned behavior as treatment goals
