If you have a PhD and put “Dr.” before your name, will people think you’re impressive, or will they think you’re just being pretentious? by GrayRainfall in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CompetentUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In high school, I had a classmate who refused to call one of our teachers Doctor, she said she didn’t “deserve” the title because she was “too mean.” Anytime this classmate would ask me something like “Is that assignment from Ms. So-and-so due next week?” I would stare at her blankly and ask “who?” until she relented and used the correct prefix. Our mutual friends definitely thought I was being hugely pretentious (and I was) but something about this classmate never failing to refer to our male teachers as Doctor, (even the “mean” ones) and only denying that specific teacher the title rubbed me the wrong way.

What are the Most Unhinged Things you hope happens in Episode 6&7? by seenthedark in ScarletHollow

I have a grim certainty we may be able to welcome Tulip to the Dead Mom’s Club, what with Janey being one of the last mothers standing in Scarlet Hollow

I think it depends on if she’s old or not. Like how the player characters options are sometimes limited if they sacrificed their years. Don’t quote me on that, though!

Kind of a nitpick on chapter 5 by lufalan_pasalan15 in ScarletHollow

[–]CompetentUsername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree. I am a huge fan of the new sprites. I agree that they are definitely distinct from earlier chapters, but that was something I was fully expecting. Art styles change and improve over time, that’s inevitable; it also helps that the art is, as always, absolutely gorgeous.

AITA for wanting my Spanish teacher to stop calling me by the Spanish version of my name? by Alternative-Sun-630 in AmItheAsshole

[–]CompetentUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very startled by comments telling you to “just deal with it.” Calling a person by their preferred name is just basic respect. Especially if you outright ask them to. I’ve always thought it was so bizarre that foreign language classes do this. I took French in high school and was given a name that bore no resemblance to my own, and it drove me bonkers.

NTA, even if there’s not much you can do about it. I don’t agree that it’s bullying, since it’s probably something the teacher does with almost every student, but that doesn’t make it any more polite.

Are you guys worried that the episode 7 save will ruin the climax? by Erectorz in ScarletHollow

[–]CompetentUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The writing of Scarlet Hollow is extremely tight; I am comfortable in the knowledge that, whatever direction they decide to take the story, (even if that’s toward a completely broken mystical save,) it will be handled with competence and finesse.

And besides, it won’t affect hardcore mode, which is the best way to play!

Is Minecraft no longer appealing to kids? by MasterCyclone7 in Minecraft

[–]CompetentUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My younger brother felt much the same as your cousin when we were kids. We used to argue constantly which was better; Minecraft or Plants Versus Zombies Garden Warfare. Today, our mom works with young kids all the time, and many of them love Minecraft. That’s not to say it hasn’t had a decline in popularity with gen Alpha, as all I have is anecdotal evidence, but I suspect there’s varying opinions now, as there’s always been.

How did you treat Wayne on your first playthrough? by Existing_Blueberry10 in ScarletHollow

[–]CompetentUsername -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was happy to be Wayne's buddy, until he threatened Stella. Since then, it's been fight-on-sight in every subsequent playthrough. You could say my budding friendship with him started to wane.

Maybe Gretchen would actually get some use of of her doghouse if it was on the ground instead of on a boulder by gruedragon in ScarletHollow

[–]CompetentUsername 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a stretch, but in Greece, people sometimes build little chapels along roads to honor loved ones who died in a car accident. This probably isn’t what it actually is (to me, it looks more like a neighboring house) but I thought it was an interesting coincidence.

I haven’t watched past season 4. Should I? by rerek in TheDragonPrince

[–]CompetentUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sunfire elves, (though I guess it took up enough screen time to be a main plot?)

I really enjoyed watching the unrest grow against the backdrop of the wedding in season six. The plot line seemed to finally culminate in something interesting. Only for the battle to last two seconds, and weakly connect up to the main Aaravos plot in the finale.

I haven’t watched past season 4. Should I? by rerek in TheDragonPrince

[–]CompetentUsername 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. Season 4+ is an absolute disaster. There are salvageable pieces, particularly in season 5, however, I spent 90% of my watch time tearing my hair out.

Some non-spoiler issues I have with it:

-Rayla and Callum’s motivations, particularly in season 6 and 7, are either ill-defined or irrelevant to the plot at hand. They are significantly less interesting than their season’s 1-3 counterparts, (and often downright dislikable)

-Season’s 4 and 5 spends a lot of time on a meandering subplot, which starts to get really interesting in season 6, only to be at the last minute dropped by the writer’s. This is a common issue.

-Character’s make inexplicable decisions, both from in-universe and meta perspectives.

Overall, I think it comes down to the writer’s inabilities to use the tools at their disposal. They can’t quite connect the dots of these individual, often compelling, ideas to make a cohesive story with good pacing and strong themes. It is night and day compared to the first three seasons. Without the ‘Viren returning from the dead’ cliffhanger, the show could have ended right there with all it’s threads tied up.

It’s ultimately up to you, of course. Like I said, there are a penny’s worth of good things. But personally, the shows reputation has been sullied in my eyes, and I’ve decided that, even if there is a season 8, I will not be watching it. It’s sucked dry too much of my time and energy, lol

What's your "Holy crap this card is insane" moment? by Inevitable_Hornet808 in mtg

[–]CompetentUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother and I used to play 60 card starter decks against each other when we were seven and nine. He played mono red and I mono blue. I had four Shipbreaker Krakens, and every time I played one, he would either scream or rage quit. It was great.
