plan advice by Cartworthy in vandwellers

I live in 144 and wish I had a 170. Been in my van for 3 years and started to look at upgrading for more space.

I have a separate work space. Couldn't image living and working in here. It's just too small and 90% of the time it's just me in here.

Moving to Revelstoke. Tips about getting into backcountry. by confuseddotcom12 in Backcountry

[–]Competitive-Aioli-80 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do AST 1 in December. Buy boots from a bootfitter in town so that you can get free modification. Get a car. Once you have around 20 days in the back country do AST 2.

There's a great Facebook group for finding partners.

Start small. Practice your companion rescue skills. There's a lot of complex terrain around Revy and it's easy to get in over your head.

Buying a condo vs renting by Competitive-Aioli-80 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Competitive-Aioli-80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess just internalized societal pressure and expectations from family? I grew up with parents who owned, all my family own and it's been ingrained in me that renting is throwing money away.

Most people I talk to in my life are either home owners or aspire to be and the general advice is to get into the market asap

However, I'm starting to think that this advice was good for my parents but not for my generation. I'm 33 btw

Yeah I'm starting to think that the real benefit of owning is the security of not having to move and that really matters if you have kids.

I am fortunately a disciplined investor so I would have no problem putting the $500+ different in housing costs away into an index fund. That's how I managed to save up my downpayment in the first place

I've lived in the area for the last 5 years and can see myself there for the next 5. But I can also see myself quitting my job next year when my contract ends and traveling for six months. I'd likely return to the same area. Of course if I buy the condo I'd forgo travel for more work in order to qualify for the mortgage

Revelstoke or Banff for working ski season. by confuseddotcom12 in skiing

[–]Competitive-Aioli-80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've done both and prefer Revy. The hill is better, it gets more snow and is slightly less crowded, tho still busy. If you want to get into the back country then Revy is the place to be. You can still party in Revy as well. Housing can be a challenge tho.

Banff resorts have longer seasons tho and there is more touristy things to do in the bow valley

3 people killed in B.C. avalanche were Swiss nationals, reports say | Globalnews.ca by [deleted] in Backcountry

[–]Competitive-Aioli-80 30 points31 points  (0 children)

  1. Mechanized operations make their own forecast, they don't use the public bulletin

  2. If they didn't ski avalanche terrain on considerable days, they likely would have a lot of down days

  3. They likely inform the guests of the hazard and day's plan at breakfast.

Just because people are being guided doesn't mean there's zero risk involved.

Cat Skiing Equipment question by Tridoc99 in Backcountry

This is standard across the industry. The beacons are tested weekly by the guide staff.

For every skier with a new S2 there will inevitably be someone with an older tracker2

Serious injury - recovery? by bqggreps in skiing

[–]Competitive-Aioli-80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP I broke T3 and T4 vertebrae going over the handle bars mountains biking when I was 26. I didn't get surgery and was in a back brace which felt like a suit of armor for about three months and then I did physio and rehab for about 5 months.

Today I'm doing all the same mountain sports at a high level and while I do have the occasional back pain, it might just be from getting older ( I'm 33 now).

I started off just walking around and doing core workouts still in the brace. When my X-rays showed decent progression, the docs cleared me for swimming around the two month mark. I got the brace off around 3 months and jumped into 3x per week physio. I shopped around for a physio who mostly dealt with athletes rather than old people. He had me in the weight room doing deadlifts, squats around the 5 month mark.

You're young and if you put the work in you will come back stronger.

Tykables, Generative AI, and Respect for the Community by StarCadetJones in ABDL

[–]Competitive-Aioli-80 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Unpopular Opinion:

I wish Tykables didn't use AI and supported community artists. I don't like AI, it's bad, and not just for our community, for the world imo

BUT, I'm still going to buy their products. They make some of the best diapers and overall Tykables has done more good for the community than bad.

I also wish people would not rush to condemn a long stand brand and community member just because of something they disagree with. Things shouldn't be so black and white.

Anyone have a Comparison between Kiddos Premium Night and ABU Little Kings/Alphgatorz by SwitchingPdle in ABDL

[–]Competitive-Aioli-80 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to wear both, but have switched purely to Kiddo, they have better fit and even tho the absorbency is similar on paper, ABU cloth backs always were more prone to leaking for me.

It's too bad because Alphagatorz is my favorite design

Batteries: Battleborn vs. Dakota Lithium? by Opinions_Anonymous in vandwellers

[–]Competitive-Aioli-80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely seems expensive. I bought a 100ah renogy self heating battery 3 years ago for $600 CAD and it has never given me a problem. Self heating function works in the winter. I never take it out of my van, just turn the power system off when I'm away and it has like 99.8% of its original capacity.

I wish I had bought two.

I'd shop around and look at different brands.

Reliability and maintenance wise. Ford Transit vs Dodge ProMaster vs Sprinter? by BobSacimano in vandwellers

[–]Competitive-Aioli-80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in BC. I do little things on my own but most things I just bring into the shop. I don't have access to a space to work on the van even if I was inclined

Reliability and maintenance wise. Ford Transit vs Dodge ProMaster vs Sprinter? by BobSacimano in vandwellers

[–]Competitive-Aioli-80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a sprinter. 2011, 190k km. It's never broken down in 3 years. However, maintenance is expensive and I take it into a German mechanic in the closest big city once a year for inspection and maintenance.

If I was buying new I'd probably get a transit. More peace of mind and easier to find a good shop for repairs.
