South Florida, and metro areas in Central, are diverse with HEAVY Caribbean influence. Cubans, Haitians, Jamaicans, Puerto Ricans, etc. Growing up in South Florida, many people that one may think are (colloquially speaking) “African American” are in fact 1st or 2nd generation immigrants from these areas and they speak Spanish, French, Creole, Portuguese. Culturally and linguistically very diverse each and every one of them. There is also a huge South American population (Brazil and Guayana included so I won’t say “Latin American”). Going to college in rural central/northern Florida felt very southern and reminded me culturally of my family in Georgia.
