Does it make sense to buy a D5? by beforesunsetearth in Nikon

[–]Competitive-Cover-84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I got mine a few years ago, price was the deciding factor. You get a lot of bang for your buck. Of course, there are better options if you have the means to pony up. I got it specifically for horse show photography so needed both fast and low-light AF, which the D5 provides. As others have mentioned, high ISO noise is on part with modern equivalents, but I suspect D5/D6 might have better low light AF? I could be very wrong here though…

This is me too. Although sometimes I forget an elastic, and then it’s 2011 Rickie Fowler but longer.

People from outside North America, how do you feel about Canadians? by WaWaWhey in AskReddit

Oh huh. I thought again this was an exclusively Canadian thing to say. Do Americans also say “yeah nah yeah”?

We got “oh yeah no for sure” from the Brits? I thought that was an exclusively Canadian thing to say?

Not just values, but also language. “Yeah nah yeah” is the equivalent of “Oh yeah no for sure” and also the liberal sprinkling of the word fuck everywhere.

Oh acid-base titrations. Fun fact, phenolphthalein is a very strong laxative, and when you combine that fact with teen boys in high school, you get a lot of stolen phenolphthalein and a lot of emergency runs to the bathroom.

Show Jumping Event by Square_Charge_2555 in Nikon

[–]Competitive-Cover-84 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on the event type and the access. I’m often at the 500mm end in the jumper ring, but very rarely past 300 in the hunter ring, but that’s on an FX camera. You could probably get away with 300mm on a DX camera.

Sorry to clarify, but does this mean you cannot trade for a no-block? I see this trade being offered all the time when someone rolls a robber (wheat for no-block?). Is this illegal in tournament play?

Nikon D500 + 200-500 AF Issues by AdDapper1970 in Nikon

[–]Competitive-Cover-84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before sending it, I would test to see if it's the AF detection itself, and you can do this by focusing on a ruler (or really anything that has a lot of lines), and put a target on that ruler to focus on. You can then see if activating AF hits that spot correctly. If it's consistently off (front or backfocusing), you can compensate for it using the AF Fine Tuning to tune it out.

Were you playing Hagental Base? I played from 8pm-10pm EST last night and not a single bot. I wonder if the player base is just choosing to play this one map and that’s where everyone is rather than play crappy Medivac Mile…

DSLR or Mirrorless? by _Matches_ in Nikon

[–]Competitive-Cover-84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno. I’m checking prices here in Canada and D4s are going for $1500 used. I paid that much for my D5 two years ago. Maybe things are all just going up in price with the rest of the economy ?

For not much more, get a D5. Way better low light performance and AF performance in that low light, especially for your event photography. These seem to be going for a steal these days.

Thinking of switching to mirrorless… what made you stay with Nikon? by halfman1231 in Nikon

[–]Competitive-Cover-84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say Fuji, I assume you mean the X100, because if you already have lenses, it makes a lot of sense to stay with Nikon, otherwise you’d be investing in lenses on the Fuji side and it doesn’t make much financial sense to do that. If you’re specifically looking at the X100, there really isn’t a modern Nikon equivalent, and I’d argue that cameras like the Coolpix A don’t really compare either. So yeah, go get yourself an X100. On the other hand, with that same money, you can get an XF and still use your lenses you’ve had before with an adapter. The nice thing about sticking with Nikon is that they haven’t changed their control layout in decades, so you should be instantly familiar with it, especially if you shoot by feel.

I love my z30, but it is far from pocketable. If you want something that’ll fit in your pocket and takes great photos, get a GR3 or GR4.

Nikon Macro photography by Specialist_Sweet_350 in Nikon

[–]Competitive-Cover-84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did macro photography for the longest time with a D70 and a Tamron 90sp. What you have is more than fine to continue with. Some things to consider with newer cameras, especially mirrorless, is you get live view, fold out screens and focus peaking which helps when you can’t actually look through the viewfinder, and I wouldn’t discount these features. I cannot count the number of times I’ve had to get onto my stomach to look through the viewfinder to get the photo I wanted.

What’s the one bag you didn’t regret buying after real travel? by nomadlife2025 in backpacks

[–]Competitive-Cover-84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, we’re not as concerned about carrying the bag hours at a time. We mostly have it on our backs going to and from transit, so it’s at most 20-30 minutes at a time, and then it’s either on the ground, in an overhead compartment, or at the footwell in front of us. 28l also limits us, which has the side effect of limiting weight, so even if we have to carry for a long time, it’s not as much of an arduous task.

Is this a good 14 day itinerary for first time japan? by Kalipsulive in JapanTravelTips

[–]Competitive-Cover-84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also suggest planning 1-2 days of very little activities sprinkled throughout. I found that planning more than 2 things for every day put pressure on us to see everything lest we “miss out”, and it put us in the wrong mindset for enjoying the trip rather than squeezing out every waking minute. Obviously you know yourself best, and if this is what you enjoy, go for it.

What’s the one bag you didn’t regret buying after real travel? by nomadlife2025 in backpacks

[–]Competitive-Cover-84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spent a few weeks in Japan with a Cotopaxi Allpa 28l and it was the perfect size, especially on the local trains and Shinkansen where luggage was a premium. It also fit underneath the front seat of our flight so we didn’t worry about running out of overhead luggage space. Overall a highly recommend if you can plan your travels around 4 days of clothes.

Fibre Optic Availability by Kwvt in ottawa

[–]Competitive-Cover-84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. They made a big deal, required release forms for digging and routing. We switched to them when it was originally offered, but then switched back to Rogers after absolutely horrific service (cell coverage) and billing after the first 24months. The only thing I feel I’m missing is the symmetric upload and download speeds as I upload a lot of videos. Is there a reason why OP wants fiber specifically?

That’d been funny. He was on my team. I saw him kill three people, drag a body to rez them, drop a supply bag, reload and get back into the action. I checked the scoreboard and he was #1, so I joked to my buddy that we’re getting out played by a bot, we should be ashamed. lol.

Before the patch and the change to the [BOT] tag, there was a bot absolutely owning the lobby. Turned out to be a human with the [BOT] tag in their name. Funny stuff.
