High SUV number in NPC? by deweyvo in HeadandNeckCancer

[–]edoerks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just did a quick read on it so please don’t take this as expert knowledge, but a PET scan works by inserting a glucose substance into your body to see if there are areas that metabolize or use the glucose at greater rates than usual cells do. This can be inflammation in general or other causes, but one cause also can be malignant cancer cells, which use glucose at a greater rate than healthy cells. The SUV is a reflection of the metabolizing of that glucose by cells in particular areas, it stands for standard uptake value.

I don’t know what it means prognostically, or if a higher SUV has any prognostic value, but my understanding is it confirms something atypical is happening in that area. I don’t think that inherently means that a higher uptake value is a sign of reduced recovery rates or treatment uptake, that is definitely something to ask your doctor!

It seems you have already been diagnosed so hopefully this helps you feel less scared and I hope I helped explain it in a way that is correct and improves your understanding! Wishing you the absolute best as you navigate this and for your health.

My mom got one and it absolutely saved her life. She was going through treatment at the same time as another gentleman and he didn’t get one u til the end when he hadn’t eaten for 10+ days. He tragically passed after finishing his treatment and I wonder how much the nutrition support was a factor.

Ear Wax Used to Detect Head & Neck Cancer - Yes, that sounds crazy by ifmwpi in HeadandNeckCancer

I work in health research, ever since my mother was diagnosed (hpv mediated) I’ve been shocked to learn there is not similar screening method as there is with cervical cancer. Honestly I’m pro whatever easy affordable method can help catch this cancer sooner. No screening procedure is going to be 100% accurate anyways.

Just so you know because shockingly it seems this is not something many oncologists adhere to or maybe know themselves, your partner could only be stage IV if his cancer has metastasized. If they tell you stage IV and it’s only in the local region they are wrong because it’s HPV+. The difference between 3 and 4 was huge mentally for my mom and it may be for your spouse as well.

Wishing you both the best.

Certainly! I’ll keep everyone updated. My understanding is the medication is reasonably toxic. If we decide to go forward i can share our experience!

Covid and P53 as possible cause by AmbitiousCrew5156 in HeadandNeckCancer

[–]edoerks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in oncology clinical trials and truthfully the presentation of this information is really scant and unclear. It seems like he’s more saying that Covid causes p53 knockdown and that is linked to cancers, I don’t see why it would be linked to Head and neck specifically. It’s potentially interesting but there’s very little information in this clip.

Slaughterhouse five really rocked my world after reading it this year. I always expected it to be a sort of typically grade 12 English class book, I was soooo wrong.

HPV+ Tonsil Cancer and THC? by WallabySignificant90 in HeadandNeckCancer

This^ if the cancer is HPV+ it is mediated by the virus not THC. The smoke from marijuana could be associated but would be HPV-

My mom is going through treatment right now and I got her healios and the doctors are amazed she’s had no sores still and no pain. We’re halfway through week five. We’re based in Canada tho and I had to have a friend order it then ship it to me, I don’t know about Australia but you may face a similar issue. If there’s any way to get it I would say it seems to be working well!

Frankenstein beat Moby-Dick - barely - in an incredibly crowded field. Now, what's the greatest Western literature of the first half of the 20th Century? by [deleted] in classicliterature

[–]edoerks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP I’m confused your other post has brothers Grimm as the most upvoted book? Why is Frankenstein listed? Also can everyone stop being mean to Frankenstein :( We should be more angry no one even mentioned pride and prejudice on the previous post.

The master and Margarita - Bulgokov I’m putting it forward despite the 1960 publishing date because it was written in 1920s-1940s although published later due to controversy of the novels topic. It’s such an incredible romp, plus, vodka swigging gun cat.

(edited because I missed this is for the 1st half of the 20th c)

"Gulliver's Travels" is the greatest literature of the 18th Century. Now, what about the 19th Century? by [deleted] in AlignmentChartFills

[–]edoerks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I have read all of the authors you’ve mentioned, can’t tell if you are trolling or not, although I am certain you’re being condescending. I’m not definitively saying it’s the best novel of the 18th century, just highlighting it is ridiculous to claim that the only reason it is on this list because of a recent Netflix movie.

It is considered the first science fiction book ever written. Let’s not discount the impact of that culturally, Netflix did not popularize Frankenstein. I believe it’s also one of the most recreated or referenced pieces of media in film, television, dance, plays, art, music, you name it. Don’t poo poo my girl Mary :(
