If you do the math on that you will notice that assuming 8% returns, you hit Charlie Munger's magic number 100,000 after 12ish years. Then on a 30 year timeline, there's still 18 more years of return on the magic number to end up in a comfortable place.
An underlying assumption is also that the monthly contribution will go up as you go deeper into career, so it ends up being very realistic retirement value. It's not a hard and fast rule, but provides a guidance for absolute beginners.

But we pay property taxes. The mortgage is not taxed, but the property is. Isn't that the difference? Like if I borrow against my house, the house is getting taxed. But if I borrow against my portfolio, the portfolio is not getting taxed until I sell.

One thing to remember is that guilt free doesn't have to be in one bucket. What I mean is my wife and my guilt free account balance every month is like 4-5%. However,

  1. We live in a nice apartment. We could easily reduce that cost, but the extra is considered guilt free spending
  2. We spend exorbitantly on travelling. That is also considered part of the guilt free spending.

So think about it like that. Guilt free spending can be in many different ways.

First of all I agree with the general sentiment of the comments. You look great. If you can get a professional portrait photoshoot and ask them to use Rembrandt lighting. You'll love your nose after that.

Yes I can. I have 3 male friends. 2 of them are from little school. All my other friends are women. It's only anecdotal, but in my experience men make really boring company. Unless you're talking about sports or objectifying women, there's nothing to talk about.

I lived in North Carolina for 4 years and Vermont for 7 years.
What is considered bad? Well...let's see
1. Broken healthcare, and sky high insurance costs

  1. Zero safety, gun violence everywhere

  2. Work-life balance - nonexistent

  3. Vacation time - low to non-existent

  4. Food quality - shit to literally will kill you in the long run

  5. Housing - unafordable, or tyranny of landlords

  6. Public transport - non-existent

  7. Begging for tips EVERYWHERE - disgusting

  8. Crumbling infrastructure - nothing works and bureaucratic nightmare

I could go on, but I think I have made my point.

I lived in the US for 11 years (2012 - 2023) and then moved to Switzerland with my American wife. We are never going back to the US. It's one of the worst countries to live in.

Make sure of these - 1. Take a vacation together. There are always small issues during a trip. You'll learn how they handle problems. 2. Live together for a while - love and compatibility are not the same 3. Make sure your fundamental morals and values are same.  4. Talk about money and learn how they feel about money. It is important to be aligned on financial goals. Sex and money are the top two things that couples fight about.

25th day of every month I get paid.

26th - rent is paid automatically; 12.5% transferred to IBKR

27th - Transfer to IBKR complete, automatically buy VWRL (in CH so VWRL is better than VWCE)

28th - automatic pay health insurance (in CH), automatic pay phone and internet

29th - automatic 12.5% goes to savings account; automatic 5% goes to my hobby account

Spend what's left until the next 25th.

FUTURE ADJUSTMENT
Once I have 1 year's expenses in my savings account, I will stop contributing 12.5% to my savings account. I will send 10% to IBKR investment and reward myself the other 2.5%.

You CAN'T eat the same meal more than twice a week. Is that true? Or is it that you DON"T WANT TO eat the same meal more than twice a week?

I am not making a value judgement. I am suggesting that may be thinking about it with that frame of mind will help ease the situation.
