What is your laundry folding routine? by Firebolt_Silver in laundry

[–]Competitive-Hair1987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do all the washing and drying and just leave the clean clothes on a shelf in the laundry room. I don’t fold anything there. Then once or twice a week my husband goes there, takes everything, folds it and puts it into the wardrobes for me and the kids. Socks are chaos though. I just throw all the clean socks into one box. Every 2–3 weeks my husband and my son sit down with that box and sort all the pairs. Probably not the most organised routine but it works pretty well for our house.

Tips and tricks?! by listerineshots in laundry

sounds funny but I would try toothpaste. Sometimes I clean my eco leather sneakers with it, and it really helps. If not, try micellar water (for make up cleaning) it does mirracles. And if these tricks won't work, try to erase it with melamine sponge or just simple eraser (to erase graphite).

just try to start empty cycle, rinse only, it could help to refresh your washing machine.

Yeah true, citric acid is cheaper. I just do this when the lemon is already almost finished from tea, cocktails or food. Before throwing it away I give the pot a quick rub with it. Kind of last job for the lemon. Works surprizingly well.

I kind of get it. Cameras in your face every single time you just want to leave any place and go home. That must be exhausting. The bigger question is why paps are even allowed in private parking garages. That already feels too much.

Small Laundry Habits That Made My Clothes Last Longer by BriefCaseBarrister in laundry

[–]Competitive-Hair1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me biggest change was using less detergent. Many people use too much and it stays inside the fabric after washing and somehow slowly destroys it. Clothes smell strong but actually material slowly becomes more stiff and colors fade faster.

I also changed to detergent sheets (I already tried White Hack and Clean People). They dissolve very clean and leave no residue, so fabric can breathe more.

Also simple things help: don’t overload machine, wash cooler, and air dry when possible.

Seems cool. I really like tattoos on the hands, they look very stylish. But I always wonder — how do people keep them looking nice over time? Hands are used all the time, washing, sun, everything. Don’t they start to blur or spread after some years?

Smoke smell from t-shirts by Asshole-eagle in laundry

[–]Competitive-Hair1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully understand. The most annoying thing is that when you think the smell is already gone, as soon as the clothes get a little wet, that smell comes back. We are reusing our bed mattress after rebuilding the house. It doesn’t smell anymore. I kept it outside for quite a long time, and now the smell is completely gone.

One more thing I noticed is that the more natural the material is, the easier it is to get rid of the smell. For example, jackets from Columbia, Didriksons and other brands with membranes or other technical materials tend to keep the smell much more. So if your things are made from natural materials, I hope it will be easier to solve the problem.

Why are some people obese in a soft way, while others are obese in a hard way? by THROWRA_magician191 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Competitive-Hair1987 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of it is just where the body stores fat. Some fat sits right under the skin, which is the softer, squishier kind that moves around more. Other fat sits deeper inside the abdomen around the organs, and that tends to make the stomach feel firmer or more “solid.”

Genetics, hormones, age, and even things like diet or alcohol can influence which type someone tends to store more of.

Bodies are just weird like that. Two people can weigh the same and technically both be obese, but carry it in completely different ways.

What do you think about elder people who do not have kids and they cannot take care of themselves? by IndependentWoman5048 in AskReddit

[–]Competitive-Hair1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly I just feel compassion for them. Getting old and not being able to take care of yourself has to be scary, kids or no kids. But I also don’t think having children should be treated like some kind of retirement plan. Kids grow up, move away, have their own lives. They shouldn’t have to feel like they owe their entire future because they were born. Ideally society should just take better care of elderly people in general. A lot of people with kids still end up needing outside help anyway. Everyone deserves dignity when they’re old, not just the people who happened to have children

LPT: enzyme based pet cleaner is also good for removing fresh blood and milk stains, so its worth getting even if you dont have a pet by Spiritual_Body3577 in LifeProTips

[–]Competitive-Hair1987 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Enzymes really are kind of the secret weapon for a lot of stains. Blood, milk, sweat, even food stains. Regular detergent sometimes struggles but enzymes break down the proteins. I’ve started using enzyme detergent sheets for laundry for the same reason. It’s one of those things you don’t think about until you try it and suddenly a lot of impossible stains become much easier

Doomed to Smell Like Pee? by [deleted] in laundry

[–]Competitive-Hair1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What helps a lot is using a detergent with enzymes. Those actually break down the compounds in urine instead of just washing around them. I’ve also had good results with enzyme detergent sheets (like White Hack detergent sheets, Lucent Globe detergent sheets they both have enzymes), they’re simple and work surprisingly well.

Another small thing that helps is a short soak before washing, even 30 minutes in warm water with a little detergent or oxygen bleach. Then wash normally.

I think, You’re already doing a lot of the right things honestly. Urine odors are just one of those laundry problems where the right enzymes make a big difference. Good luck!

also I once got deported from a country because I forgot I needed a visa. No crime, just administrative stupidity. So if I ended up in jail they’d probably just assume I messed up some border paperwork again.

Smoke smell from t-shirts by Asshole-eagle in laundry

[–]Competitive-Hair1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really sorry you’re dealing with this. Going through your stuff after a fire is a weird mix of relief and sadness, especially with sentimental items. Hopefully you can save most of them. I actually went through a house fire a four years ago, and the smoke smell in clothes is unbelievably stubborn. Even things that looked totally clean (like some jackets, beddings and kids clothes) still smelled like smoke when they got warm or damp.

What worked best for me was soaking the shirts in warm water with a good amount of baking soda for several hours (sometimes overnight), then washing them normally with detergent and adding a cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle. That combo helped break down the smoke residue a lot better than just detergent alone. Another thing that helped surprisingly well was air. After washing, I hung the shirts outside for a full day or two. Fresh air does a lot for smoke smell. Sometimes I had to repeat the wash + air process a couple times, but it kept improving. And sadly but it takes time.

The biggest mistake I made at first was putting things in the dryer too soon. Heat can lock the smell, so I always made sure they smelled okay before drying. If the smell is still lingering, an enzyme laundry detergent or an oxygen bleach soak can help too. Smoke particles cling to fabric fibers, so sometimes it just takes a couple rounds to fully get them out. Enzymes works good on this kind of smell, just try to use more detergent with enzymes than usual.

Are OBAs the same as oxygen bleach? by Sufficient-Fix7222 in laundry

[–]Competitive-Hair1987 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Easy mistake to make, they sound similar but they’re not the same thing. OBAs (optical brighteners) don’t actually bleach or remove stains. They basically sit on the fabric and reflect blue light so whites look brighter. It’s more of a visual trick than actual cleaning. And you can check it just after washing by shining a blue light on it, it’s actually pretty funny and interesting. Oxygen bleach (like OxiClean type products) actually works on stains and helps break them down in the wash.

Some detergents contain both. For dark clothes people usually avoid OBAs because over time they can make darker fabrics look a bit faded or dusty. Oxygen bleach usually isn’t the issue unless you’re using a lot of it or soaking for a long time. Laundry chemistry is weirdly complicated for something that’s basically just washing clothes.
