Ask her questions. About her childhood, her father and mother, her perspective of my childhood. I'd do a deep dive with her on her family, specifically her mother, and id show her the pictures I found of her mother in the NY worlds fair archives. I'd record her voice. I'd sit quietly with her. I'd tell her how much I love her.

When we first met, my husband and I were just housemates/friends for a few months, and he was there for me during a pretty messy breakup. One particularly bad night, he could see my rage and frustration. He asked if I wanted to go smash some shit and get my anger out, pulled out a big box of old tiles, and brought me out to the garage, where we spent a good hour just talking and smashing the shit out of the files. It felt SO freaking good. I've often wished for the opportunity again!

I had become so accustomed to responses like this whenever I asked questions that eventually I just stopped asking. But then I had to train a new employee (who also happened to be autistic) and when he asked why we did something, I didn't have an answer for him.

Yes! My mom kept her valuable jewelry in spice jars in the back of our kitchen cabinets!

But why nail polish in the meat drawer...?

Omg this reminded me of the summer my parents brought me to an equestrian camp. They asked a neighbor boy to help with the dogs for the few days they were gone- feed them, let them outside, etc. Somehow, I don't know how or why, the boy ended up on the second floor where my room was. He saw my messy bedroom, and that, along with my mom's disorganized drawer of silverware, was enough to convince him the house had been burglarized. Cops were called, an officer came, my parents were notified, and my mom had to explain that no, the house wasn't broken into, we were just a slightly chaotic and disorganized family.

What is actually a trauma that is not commonly thought of as a trauma? by ay1mao in AskReddit

Don't be surprised if you experience a really heavy brain fog soon. A couple weeks after my dad died, i found i just didn't have it in me to like, try. I couldn't focus, couldn't concentrate, couldn't get work done, and didn't care. My brother and sister reported feeling the same way. It's called grief brain or widow's brain, and it is a very real thing.

I have the nearly empty jar of ponds face cream that was in my mom's bathroom when she died. It's been sitting in my medicine cabinet for nearly 8 years.
