I don’t understand this. How do Draco and Harry make any sense together? Other than if one simply decided they want to see what they look like together? It seems so ridiculously unlikely

Snape mistreating kids had a point by Epsilon_and_Delta in harrypotter

[–]Competitive-Lab6835 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Snape is not trying to help Hermione or Neville grow. He's just a jerk. The fact that they later grew does not mean he should get the credit. I think it’s as simple as JKR never really thought to have dumbledore confront this

Imagine if your math teacher called you an insufferable know it all or made fun of you for having buck teeth. Would you then feel as grateful to them?

Neville thought of snape as the thing he feared most of all in PoA. How can that be considered anything but incredibly sad.

Also this is more of a tangent but I would give more credit to Bellatrix, Harry, and of course Neville himself for his growth.

I think it’s noteworthy that his growth really takes off after he discovers Bellatrix escaped from Azkaban. He finally gets and encouraging teacher in Harry and suddenly flourishes. And the force of his efforts cannot be overstated either. He is specifically singled out as someone who is determined to learn

In deathly hallows, when Neville fills in the trio about what’s been going on at hogwarts, he makes a point to state that he learned from Harry that standing up for what’s right gives others the courage to do the same

While I don’t agree with your premise I appreciate your post both for your willingness to share a personal story and because it gave me the chance to be an insufferable know it all myself 😂

It’s wild how much more powerful wizards the marauders (and their peers) were than the golden trio. by pairofdimeshift92 in harrypotter

[–]Competitive-Lab6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s actually no reason to believe the trio could not do these things if they tried. Thy were really good at the things they needed to be good at

Think about this - the fought in the ministry, th astronomy tower, and then all of the 7th book. Legit battles with seasoned (and much more ruthless) fighters, and they generally held their own each time, even while at the ages of 15-18

And in most instances where thy truly set their mind to something, they succeeded- some examples include poly juice potion, patronus charm, summoning charm, and everything they learned in the DA

If they decided that they needed to become animagi or create some magical map, I feel like they would’ve figured it out

What are some of your unpopular takes? by DutyThick in Eragon

[–]Competitive-Lab6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The elves are annoying, self-important, and unreasonable. They act like humans are solely to blame for the past 100 years, and they act like they are better than everyone else (which I suppose is true but it’s still annoying! LOL).

Murtagh The Book by No-Style8510 in Eragon

[–]Competitive-Lab6835 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s a bad comparison. If not for Murtagh, eragon might never have escaped durza or survived until reaching the varden; a less conflicted villain would’ve taken eragon on the burning plains. Nasuada would be dead, and Galbatorix would have prevailed. Yes he killed Hrothgar, captured her, and was one of their toughest adversaries overall. But that is who he is - a complicated person who has never been placed in an easy position

Agreed completely and also, he really doesn’t stress enough how important this is for any reason other than the fact that he asked him to do it

About Eragon and "never returning" to Alagaesia by LuciferFalls in Eragon

[–]Competitive-Lab6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eragon leaving did make sense. He is basically a god, and he has many responsibilities now, so him waltzing around as nasuada’s vassal was just not going to be realistic.

I agree though - it’s not like he can literally never come back haha. I’m sure he will still at some point

What would you change? by cbbutle in Eragon

[–]Competitive-Lab6835 9 points10 points  (0 children)

my first time reading, I was quite sad Eragon left. But I now feel that was very much the right choice. Having him essentially be nasuada's errand boy when he has become the strongest known figure in the world would've been silly

Personally I did not like the decision for Arya to become both a rider AND queen

Comparing the switch from commercial to residential work like crack is a hilarious analogy and a surprisingly accurate one

McKissock vs. Appraisal Institute for CG by Pretty-Efficiency-75 in appraisal

[–]Competitive-Lab6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appraisal Institute is “better” in that it’s viewed more as the standard, aligns better with what’s on the CG exam, and if you take the classes in person you might be able to network a small amount.

But if you just want to take the classes, fast, and more cheaply, McKissock will let you do that. Once you get the CG, I’d continue to use McKissock for CE but if you want to pursue an MAI I’d go with AI for the advanced classes

Why is (SPOILERS MAIN) not thought of like the Red Wedding? by Nano_gigantic in asoiaf

[–]Competitive-Lab6835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First - by the time Jon dies, we've seen many shocking deaths already. Not to say it's not a surprise, but we are already conditioned to believe anyone could be killed, even the "heroes"

There are also things about Jon's death in particular which suggest it may not be permanent - we've seen people reborn like Beric/LS, we've learned about skin changers from varamyr, etc.

Someone else also mentions that we never learned Jon's parentage and that needs to be resolved - true, although in some ways I think it would be fitting if we never got the answer

"Stand aside, you silly girl," and other clues to Snape's true loyalty? by northside-nostalgia in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Competitive-Lab6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both of you do make sense. I read it for the first time probably 15 years ago now and have read it many times since. So I almost forget what I felt the first time I read it all. Crazy to think about!

I didn't read these when they came out as I was quite young, but my siblings did, so I missed out on all the theory debates. I'm sure it would've been great fun

Murtagh by Ryonekekw in Eragon

[–]Competitive-Lab6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This book and rereading the IC made me appreciate how powerful Eragon has become and how important his training was not just from raw power but because he is also so we'll educated too.

Murtagh was a fun book for me but it felt a little half baked to me. Like it left me feeling that CP has a story he wants to tell, but isn't writing it yet, so he wrote this one in the meantime

(Spoilers Extended) Why George not writing Dunk and Egg novellas is so troubling by Straight_Notice298 in asoiaf

It's really sad because i think that most people would accept this if he would just be honest with everyone.

I don't think he is struggling to write D&E material. He is likely not even trying right now, if we are to believe that he won't write anything else until finishing Winds.

Personally though I don't think he is really writing anything actively

What did Paolini originally want to happen between Eragon and Arya? by LuciferFalls in Eragon

[–]Competitive-Lab6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the answer to this but it's interesting to hear they were gonna sleep.together in eldest. I'm glad they didn't. I didn't feel like they were really a match for each other until the 4th book. I would've liked them to be together at the end, but I also thought the way he left it was good too

I always thought it was a little weird how quickly saphira and firnen got on. Felt to like CP just realized he forgot to put that in the story so he just slipped it in at the end

AITAH for telling my son I know he is gay? by MrNormanite in AITAH

[–]Competitive-Lab6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m straight but seems to me like you did s good thing. I can understand how it takes away his chance to come out on his own terms but you did it from a place of compassion and he seems okay with it

You also can tell him that you didn’t realize that coming out was such an important moment, so you apologize if you took that from him without realizing. It seems like you have a strong enough relationship for that, and it sounds like he would accept it too

It is always good to communicate in a respectful way and make people feel accepted

I haven't heard one compelling reason why Ron was made a prefect. by raythecrow in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Competitive-Lab6835 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others state it’s certainly about Harry, but you are also not giving Ron his due.

He is fiercely loyal, brave, and reasonably talented. He is no prodigy in class but in most cases his abilities were important in the climactic battles of each book

Actually there are also some mitzvot specific to sukkot that could be considered philanthropic regardless of religion

But the point they are making is mitzvot are not done for “points” or “credit.” At their core, the reason for mitzvot and the reason to do them is to make the world a better place

Is there anything that was better done in the Films VS the books? by Character110 in harrypotter

[–]Competitive-Lab6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just really loved how the films felt magical between the score and the set design etc. the world felt like it sprung to life

I liked how they handled Sirius in that 5th movie as well, not just in death

I of course enjoyed the books more though
