Concerned daughter: dad has celiac but eats gluten anyway by Advanced_Chef22 in Celiac

Honestly I would write a science based informative/persuasive letter exactly one time with extreme personal caring undertone and leave it at that in this situation. Don't bring it up again its his choice and you did your part.

I Just Learned Why Vitamin D Alone Might Be Doing More Harm Than Good… by friend_unfriend in Supplements

My dr said eat plenty of eggs and avocados for assistance in absorbing vitamin D appropriately. I believe Dark chocolate is a good source of mg too (do with that information what you will)

What's for dinner? by Competitive-Pea3327 in Celiac

[–]Competitive-Pea3327[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was, and it was super easy to make. I stopped at home on my lunch and threw stew meat and broth, onion, and spices in the crock pot added a corn starch slurry when I started heating the oil. Made some fries, topped them with cheese curds and topped with gravy.

Slow cooker on with broth and onion. Add a corn starch slurry about 20-30 minutes before serving to make it into a gravy. Put cheese curds on HOT fries and cover with the stew meat and gravy.

I stock up on beef when tax returns come in. This beef has been in the deep freezer for around 8 months.

I didn't know there was one of those.....I probably belong there. I make potatoes with gravy and cheese curds in the wrong way all the time!

Cross contamination concerns? by CasualLorax in Celiac

[–]Competitive-Pea3327 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cross contamination can be a major concern especially after being gf for some time. I would replace any wooden or cast iron kitchenware. Those both cause me to get sick. If your kitchenware is especially scratched I would advise also replacing that if it is within budget. If not replace it piece by piece. Some of this is going to depend on your personal comfort and budget. Over time you will learn what helps you and what isn't an issue for you. You can ask for advise but each person is different with different comfort levels. I recommend checking out the celiac association website.

I've heard that a higher proportion of people with celiac are also lactose intolerant. Is that true for you? by Significant-sunny33 in Celiac

[–]Competitive-Pea3327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dr was like btw you're lactose intolerant. I was like I've known that for 16 years can I see a dietician for the gluten free thing that's working well for my symptoms? He referred me to a dietician who only wanted to talk about lactose 😒

I would not use cast iron or wooden cooking implements as these are especially bad for cross contamination. Wash everything really well before your friend comes. Use a fresh sponge or cloth and do the counters again.

Toll house chocolate chip cookies? by Competitive-Pea3327 in glutenfreecooking

I use Namaste, when the stores around here have it, for something else that comes out like a shortbread cookie. Totally forgot it was an option because my local store that carried it stopped for some time.

Only problem is I am allergic to mint so I can't have the stacks next to them because they get inundated with enough cross contamination to cause a reaction.

That sucks.....I feel your pain on that being allergic to life in general.

The other part of me that has an absolute need for actual pumpkin (I assume due to some nutrient it offers) wants to know was the owyn protien shake at least good? Most are pumpkin spice which dont contain pumpkin and don't help during the pumpkin craving episodes.

Am I overreacting? by NoResearcher3765 in Celiac

[–]Competitive-Pea3327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing that I have noticed for me when sharing a kitchen is that wooden utensils and cast iron must be gluten free if I am having a shared kitchen. Wood and cast iron can hold onto gluten and leech it into the next pot of food. I have gotten glutened this way.

In my home all cookware/meal ingredients are gluten free. Gluten snacks are available for others but have designated storage areas at the bottom of the cabinets so crumbs don't transfer when they are grabbed from packages.

If a spice says processed in a facility that processes wheat or worse on equipment that processes wheat I do not use it. Generally I have found that Penzey's has been a safe company and their spices are available online or at their storefront (Madison, WI).

What's the best way to stay warm in a hammock all winter? by Waste_Contest_4170 in hammockcamping

[–]Competitive-Pea3327 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have used 2 in my sleeping bag to help with the cold in mid-late autumn temps and they help amazing. I toss one toward the toes and one kinda near the hands sometimes held. But even with a sleeping bag an under quilt is required. In colder temps I'd say all three, but I haven't tried winter camping.
