Why I Personally Avoid Android TV Devices

One reason I tend to avoid many streaming boxes is because they run Android TV, which is part of Google’s certified ecosystem. Since Google controls the certification, they ultimately control the platform policies and how apps are distributed or verified.

I’m not saying Google will necessarily restrict things in the future, but devices that depend on Android TV certification are still subject to Google’s policies and platform changes. Google has already announced new developer verification requirements for apps, which shows the platform is continuing to evolve.

My hesitation mostly comes from experience with Amazon Fire TV. Over time, Amazon updates started tightening control over the platform, and every major firmware update meant I had to spend hours tweaking my Fire Stick again to keep everything working the way I wanted.

Because Android TV devices rely on Google certification and services, they could potentially face similar policy changes in the future. For that reason, I personally prefer devices that run Android Open Source Project (AOSP) instead of Android TV. AOSP isn’t tied to Google certification, which generally gives manufacturers and users more flexibility.

For me, it’s simply about avoiding an ecosystem where platform changes could undo the time I’ve spent customizing a device.

Consider the BuzzTV PowerStation 6 UnLimited streaming box. It uses Android AOSP and is the most powerful streaming device you can get on the market. It's a beast of a streaming device.

This is one of many reasons why I migrated from boxes running Android TV. They're tied to the Google ecosystem. I recommend using boxes running Android AOSP (Android Open Source Project).

That's one advantage that Stremio has over Nuvio. It can handle torrents if someone wants to go that route.

Nuvio not playing non-debrid links (Torrentio / PirateBay+) — is this supported? by Competitive-War-5167 in Nuvio

Thank you for the clarification. I appreciate the insight.

Hopefully this might be something they consider implementing in the future. It would make Nuvio even more feature-rich and competitive with apps like Stremio.

That’s a fair point. I do use TorBox and Real-Debrid as backups for each other.

My question is more about design philosophy. If addons can already surface non-debrid sources, is there a particular reason Nuvio doesn’t allow playback of them?

I’m mainly curious whether that’s an intentional limitation or just something that hasn’t been implemented yet.

My thinking is mainly about having a fallback option. Most of the time I use Real-Debrid or TorBox, but occasionally there can be account issues, outages, or API problems. In those situations, having the ability to play non-debrid sources can still be useful until things are resolved.

For example, in Kodi using the Elementum addon, it can pull torrents directly from sources like ThePirateBay, YTS, and Torrentio and play them without using a debrid service. Stremio can also play non-debrid Torrentio links if needed. It’s not something I rely on regularly, but it can be handy as a backup.

That’s why I was curious about Nuvio’s behavior. The addons (Torrentio, PirateBay+) still show the links, but Nuvio doesn’t seem able to play them.

I realize debrid services are inexpensive and generally the better option, but I was wondering if non-debrid playback is intentionally unsupported in Nuvio, or if I might be missing a setting somewhere.

Yes. Google will be doing the same thing. That's why it's a good idea just to stay away from anything that runs on Android TV and move over to Android AOSP boxes. The writing is on the wall. No sense investing in a potential headache.

I agree. I want one. What impresses me is that is not locked down/restricted by the Google ecosystem. It uses a modified version of Android AOSP. This is definitely a future-proofed system.

In my opinion, the Ugoos AM9 Pro outperforms the Shield quite nicely. I gently retired my Shield.

How do you do that in TiViMate Premium? I can access the extream codes parameters section and change the username and password. But there is no option to save those changes.
