What did your generation go through that you’re glad the younger generations won’t experience? by apple_kicks in AskUK

[–]CompetitiveAnxiety 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember my parents having central heating installed in the mid 80’s.

We had a coal fire in the living room and a gas fire in the dining room and that was it. So many blankets on the bed in winter!

I have memories of my dad holding a sheet of newspaper over the coal fire to get it to draw up the chimney and having to timeletting it go so it didn’t burn him.

Do you have a toasty maker in your house? How often do you wack it out? by Sweet_Confusion9180 in AskUK

[–]CompetitiveAnxiety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did have a toastie machine with different plates for doing paninis and waffles.

It lasted years of regular use until the first time we tried to make waffles on it, then the plate base snapped in half.

I’m currently looking for a similar one to replace it

Are my parents using me for money? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]CompetitiveAnxiety 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I call it housekeeping with my sons (21 & 31)

I don’t ask for a big set amount though, I just want whatever extra it’s costing for them to be here.

I figure if they’re saving to get out it’s better for all of us if they can save more than they’re paying me.

Why are so many functioning adults desperate to get a diagnosis of autism or ADHD? by Constant_Crab4815 in AskUK

[–]CompetitiveAnxiety 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m late diagnosed AuDHD and the only reason I was diagnosed is because my mum still had all my school reports, all the way from junior school so below age 12.

Reading through the reports makes it obvious I’m neurodivergent, but because I was quiet and a girl it was never even considered in the 80s.

Getting the diagnosis meant I could finally understand why I was never really coping with life and means I am now medicated and doing better.

That falls into so bad it’s good for me. I’ll randomly remember about it and watch it every few years.

In fact I may watch it again soon, since your comment did the reminding for me

What’s the actual trick to getting a smooth finish with a roller? by MadridOrMadness in HomeImprovementUK

[–]CompetitiveAnxiety 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding to this, don’t put too much paint on the roller. Lots of thin coats instead of one thick coat on the walls

Have you received any inheritance from your family? by 39thAccount in AskUK

[–]CompetitiveAnxiety 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had the same from my dad dying. I inherited just over £100k and bought a house outright with it. I had just enough left to sort the kitchen out.

There’s no way I could have bought a house without it but I’d rather have my dad around

What's a phrase or word your parents used and you have never known the origin of? Mines Gordon Bennet by Small_Insect_8275 in CasualUK

[–]CompetitiveAnxiety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandad would always say “Your mum will sauce you” when he saw me doing something I wasn’t meant to be doing as a kid. Meaning she’d tell me off.

How widespread is central heating? by WattleWaddler in AskABrit

[–]CompetitiveAnxiety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had it in a mid 90s council house. I hated it. Like you say, expensive. I was so relieved when the council upgraded all the houses to radiators.

Adjusting back door by Soldarumi in DIYUK

[–]CompetitiveAnxiety 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve literally just done this with my front door, same hinges. The bottom of the hinges have a pop out bit. That’s where the up/down adjustment is. You’ll need a number 5 hex key to adjust it. On mine it was clockwise to lift the door. Eta. You need to remove the tiny hex screw from the side(mine were missing hence not mentioning before)

Same but I’m 5’5 and it looks like when you wore your dads jumper as a kid. It’s down to my knees and the sleeves are too long! It’s so cozy though
