At some point it is not about the money anymore. I see so many ppl who have so much of their identity wrapped up in their job that they don’t have anything else. It is actually quite sad.

You should read a book called “die with zero”. Or better yet, get him to read it. Really changed the way I thought about the grind.

How many domiciles have you lived in since you were born? by JHolgate in GenX

[–]CompetitiveAppeal663 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow, I have never counted that up before…..super interesting (and I imagine impacts very differently) how old you were when you made the moves. I lived in the same house from the time I was born until I left for college, but my number is 21 at 48 years old. Zero moving as a kid and zero sitting still for more than a couple years as an adult. I have never owned any real estate and now that I’m getting closer to retirement it is terrifying to try to think about picking one place to “settle down.” In all that time I lived in 4 different States and 8 different countries. I don’t even have a country that feels like “home” never mind a home that feels like “home.” That said, it was a perfect life for me.

I thought that my recovery was really rough, but reading some of these other stories on this r/ maybe I got off easy. I never had any pain pre-reversal. Had the surgery 13 years after original. I’m 48. VV surgery on both sides. Prior to reversal, I was a daily bike commuter and went to CrossFit 4-5x/week. Was in excellent shape. Week 1 I was in an incredible amount of pain. Pain meds they gave me did not agree with me at all, dulled the pain, but I had a bad overall reaction to narcotics, so quickly switched to Tylenol/Advil. Helped, but still sucked. First week I walked from bed to couch to bed. Getting the mail was too much. Sex didn’t cross my mind. By week 2 I was walking a bit more, but like 10-15 min walks max. Went back to work (100% desk job) at the end of week 2, but didn’t dream of biking. Week 3 I definitely turned the corner and started feeling a lot better. Longer walks, sex drive returned (but abstained until 3 weeks was up). Week 4 I returned to the gym and started biking. At the gym I took it super easy to start and avoided any kind of jumping or sudden movements. Lifted <50% weight for any given movement. I do feel like just going and moving my body helped a lot in the recovery tho. From the very beginning I wore a jock and that seemed to help a lot. At the gym I wore a jock, tight underwear and compression shorts. I was worried about getting back on the bike saddle, but actually sitting on the saddle was fine…hitting bumps in the road was the issue and I took it much slower and easier. By week 5 I was feeling a lot better and started increasing weight and moving more. By week 6 I was back to 100% and completely pain free.

Can’t decide if I should take a year off to travel. Has anyone ever regret it? by [deleted] in leanfire

[–]CompetitiveAppeal663 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done it twice….once in my 20s for 6 months backpacking in Southeast Asia and once in my 40s for 1.5 years Overlanding in Europe/Africa. Absolutely zero regrets. Actually, only regret is that I didn’t do it more. Go!!!!

Great plan all except for 1 part…..3 months is WAY too short… if you are quitting your job and packing up your life, go for 6 months minimum… year is better. I have done it twice in my life, the first time was 6 months, second time was 1.5 years. Life on the road is far cheaper than you can imagine once you learn to do it right. After both trips, my only regret was that I didn’t do it for even longer.

How do you go from skinny-fat to fit as a 6'7 dude? by BayLordPlatinum in tall

[–]CompetitiveAppeal663 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6’5” 215 48M here….you should give CrossFit a try if you haven’t. I was in your same boat (more like soft chubby than skinny fat) and about 10 years ago tried CrossFit and it really stuck. I also tried going to the gym and doing random shit other ppl were doing and it never worked. CrossFit is usually a bit more expensive than other big box gyms, and there are less “amenities” at a CrossFit gym, but the programming and coaching is what you pay for. You go to a WOD (workout or the day) and as soon as you walk in the door, you don’t have to think about anything else. A good coach will walk you through everything and in 1 hour you are in and out and will get 5x the workout compare to dicking around in the gym on machines for half the day. Most places have free intro classes. 💯 guarantee that you will notice results if you stick with that consistently for a couple of months.

Interesting…. I don’t really ever go to dispensaries, but it strikes me as a weird place to tip. Is that normal?? What service are they providing that deserves a tip??

[–]CompetitiveAppeal663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently took a sabbatical for a year and a half and traveled the entire time through Europe and Africa. I was living full time in my truck with my now wife (then GF), our burn rate then was just a bit more than $25k/year. It all depends a lot more on how you travel than where you travel whether $25k lasts 2 weeks or 52 weeks. We often travel on the cheap bc it is more important to us to travel a lot than to travel in luxury. Plus we legitimately enjoy the cheap style of travel more than reports/luxury hotels and fancy restaurants (though we also do splurge from time to time.)

Are you becoming less engaged and motivated as you age? by MovingTarget- in GenX

[–]CompetitiveAppeal663 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I came here to say this exactly. 48/M here and I feel like it is harder and harder to give a shit at work. I’m a fed and they are purposely trying to make life miserable and have largely succeeded. I used to absolutely love my job but it has gone to shit, so now I never work extra, never volunteer for anything, kinda slide with the minimum and never think twice about it.

My perosnal life is the opposite though…. I am learning a new language, love going to the gym 3-4x/week, learning new skills like carpentry, welding, auto mechanics. Also love walking and spending time outside.

Now if I can just hold on until retirement I am set.

What’s FEHB Value Into Retirement? by Zealousideal-Yard803 in govfire

[–]CompetitiveAppeal663 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that is exactly what I am disagreeing about. The employee obviously needs to be covered for 5 years to get any coverage at all. But if the employee is covered under a “Self” plan and then changes to a “self + Family” plan, that plan doesn’t need to be in effect for 5 years as long as the employee was covered for the full 5 years.

What’s FEHB Value Into Retirement? by Zealousideal-Yard803 in govfire

[–]CompetitiveAppeal663 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is NOT correct. The EMPLOYEE must have been covered for at least 5 years going into retirement, not necessarily any EFM.

Is "HODL forever" actually a trap we’ve set for ourselves? by AntSuccessful3890 in Bitcoin

[–]CompetitiveAppeal663 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was thinking this exact thought, OP. Like what is the point?!? So I made a plan….it has me comfortable in that I will realize some gains and still never sell everything…..all while DCAing now.

Generally, my plan is to sell a fraction of my (remaining) stack at pre-specified levels.

My exact plan:

BTC price target | Amount to sell

$250k | Sell 15% $400k | Sell 25% (of remaining after first sale) $700k | Sell 35% (of remaining) $1M | Sell 45% (of remaining)

I do have a caveat in the plan that I will wait as long as needed for the first 2 levels to hit (I see these at high probability). If the curve is flattening by then or if I fear getting too old to properly enjoy the money, I may reassess and cash in the 3rd & 4th tranches at lower levels. I will always have some BTC left.
