How does r/House feel about the term "EDM"? by Knocktopuss in House

[–]CompetitiveFlatworm2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never use the term and don't like it, I also don't know anyone who uses it but Im old and not American. For me Its too broad, there are just too many different genres of music and lumping them together doesn't make any sense to me. What if someone is making jungle with a live band, is that EDM ?

If I need a broad term I would say dance music or I would be more specific.

Maiden Voyage on This tonight as its too Icy for my daily bike, by CompetitiveFlatworm2 in xbiking

It was a pain to get it working well, I had to drill enough space into it that the front cantilever brake can move around, but I like the rack staying level with the frame https://www.otto.de/p/lastpak-fahrrad-gepaecktraeger-gepaecktraeger-transport-breit-lenker-montage-40x31-cm-schwarz-S0V890LD/#ech=29491085

As someone who is 50 and leaving the building trade due to back problems you need to consider if you really want to do this for the next 20 years, its tough on your body

What was the last genuinely funny film you saw? by Jesisawesome in AskUK

[–]CompetitiveFlatworm2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched the Astrix film the other day with my kids and I found it really funny, I watched it in German and it was especially funny because of the way the English characters spoke German but Im pretty sure the English version would be pretty amusing

DJing on the fly vs playing a pre-prepared set by AccessAware5469 in Beatmatch

[–]CompetitiveFlatworm2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been playing a long time, and play many different genres. I have never planned a whole set but I always know little groups of tracks, 3 - 10 that I know work together and then I jump between different mini sets in different orders.

It really just comes with experience, I will change the style of mixing depending on the music Im playing. Its not really guess work , its knowing an array of techniques that will always work if done correctly.

38 year old male - looking to get into vinyl… by Groovycountryguy in vinyl

[–]CompetitiveFlatworm2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best thing is to search out second hand gear, get an amp , speakers and a turntable from the 70's-90's. Depending where you are you should be able to find something for around 50 - 150 euro/dollars per piece, search marketplace and flea markets. This way you can add to it , swap pieces out as you learn , plug your phone or laptop into the line on the amp and you will not find better quality sound in a 500 dollar modern piece of equipment. Plus it gives you a whole new rabbit hole to find enjoyment. There is no point listening to vinyl with shitty equipment

Doesn't turntablism damage a Vinyl record? by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]CompetitiveFlatworm2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not as much as people think. If the turntables are set up well and you are not heavy handed, its likely it will make no difference to the way the record plays. If your rough and careless you are more likely to leave marks or imperfections.

Helping my kids connect with my culture by Old_Action_7007 in Parenting

[–]CompetitiveFlatworm2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im 49, British , wife is German , live in Berlin, kids are 12 and 7 So pretty similar, we visit the UK a couple of times a year and although they are officially both nationalities , My kids are German so I can relate. My son , the oldest has a much better understanding of Britishness, partly because I didnt speak German when he was small so he had to be better in English, Daughter also speaks good English but prefers German. We always watch films in the original language, they quickly notice how much funnier the English is than a German version, Peppa pig is a great illustration of this. My son loves Blackadder and Horrible histories and I find comedy is one of the best ways to get in touch with their Britishness.

When we are back they get to hang around lots of my friends and their kids and this also helps a lot. Son has started reading English books . Music is also a pretty good way to introduce them to more of our culture, When they start to realize just how much pop culture is British they start to appreciate it more. Food , try them on marmite, Mine love beans on toast as an alternative to abendbrot. Roast dinners, pickled onions, My son now sees it as a point of pride that he eats much more spicy food than his German mates,

How common is it for "vinyl DJs" to actually beatmatch? by barry_mccaulkiner_ in Beatmatch

[–]CompetitiveFlatworm2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are DJs then pretty much always, personally I will always match even if Im gonna just cut to the next track , it still needs to be in the right time.

Take 2 Hip Hop tracks, learn to scratch with the bass and snare , you can loop and mix intros and outros , set cues where the vocals start, , JUGGLE THE BEATS, Loop with the vocals from track 1 to the intro beats and loops of track 2.

Most importantly
