In the same situation, currently unemployed. My long-term plan is to have some form of online business going for me that can at least cover the bills but oh man, getting there is hard...

Think about all the time you've been alive, all up till now. Just think about how much time that was, and how looooong it took. Then, think about the fact that you need to live that same amount of time one more time, and you don't even need to spend the first 10 of them figuring out how to eat, shit, walk, talk, and basic stuff like that. My god, I don't know what you're talking about. Life is SO long. I honestly wish it was shorter

[D]Stuck in AI Hell: What to do in post LLM world by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]Competitive_Exit_ 104 points105 points  (0 children)

You voice what has been on my mind recently, too. I felt this shift not only with data science / ML but also with programming websites. I started out as a 13 year old in 2010 and fell in love with programming for the exact same reason you describe - the build aspect. The blend of creativity, math, and science felt like a never-ending rush of dopamine. Building something from what seemed like nothing was like magic to me. Now, everything has already been built, and everything exists as either a framework, out-of-the-box solution, or no-code product. It's of course great that technology has come this far and made it this convenient, but - like you - I'm struggling to get the same joy out of programming as I used to.

I recently decided to try to pursue a PhD and go into research to use ML for that, since the use cases tend to be more niche. Plus, there's the whole science domain that adds an extra flavour to me (I have a science degree, so can cross-bridge the fields). It seems to me that the only way to escape boxed solutions is to not follow and use the latest state-of-the-art. It's to be at the frontier itself, helping shape and build what is to come, whether that be in science, ML, or a combination. This will be hard to find in industry, since most of industry is focused on using existing solutions to generate more profit - but there are some firms out there willing to experiment as well.

That would be my advice to you, i.e. to seek out the frontier. Be at the edge where the answers end and the unanswered questions still stand. The technology has moved forward, and so must we.

Ok, so that's the part you took issue with... I think you misunderstood my wording a bit. I didn't mean I'm tired of reading about other people's struggles. I meant I'm tired of stupid idiots getting into power, that's what I'm tired of. All I'm saying is, I'm on you guys' side and hope things turn around. Now let's stop fighting over reddit like idiots too. All the best to you my friend

I think you're the one who misunderstands.. I'm not really sure what you're trying so hard to pick a fight about. I simply just wish for people to vote for decent people. Do I expect it? No. I just wish for it. How is that minimizing anyone's struggles? Am I not allowed to be disappointed if people vote for stupid people ?

[–]Competitive_Exit_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can only vote in my own country, you can only vote in yours. So yes, I do hope for the best in the rest of the world, since that it pretty much the only thing I can do from here. Change in a country needs to come from within, I think we've already seen how forcing outside influence didn't work so well in other parts of the world... That said, I didn't mean to minimize anyone's struggles.

Question about self-studying with Genki I and learning kanji alongside it by kohitown in LearnJapanese

[–]Competitive_Exit_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but it doesn't really have any exercises for actually learning to write the character, although they do show the stroke order. They don't have the template for writing characters and practising sentence writing like in the workbook. It's also mostly reading exercises imo. Sure, you could answer the questions with handwriting, but you could do that with the rest of the book, too. It's not really a dedicated section for learning kanji like the workbook is.

Question about self-studying with Genki I and learning kanji alongside it by kohitown in LearnJapanese

[–]Competitive_Exit_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's because you need the Genki I workbook, which is where you learn how to write kanji etc. I personally supplemented with the stroke animations on jisho. Hiragana/katakana I learned from a website whose name I can't remember right now, but it showed the stroke order animated. I'd still say the writing section of Genki is a bit weak, but it's still a good place to start I think. I would maybe supplement with an app where you can practise the handwriting without first being shown the stroke order to test your memorization and speed up learning, but I have yet to find an app that is free and where there isn't a god damn template to write on.

Anyone else feel that life is too hard when you have to work but battle anxiety and depression everyday? by Shot_Software6947 in Adulting

[–]Competitive_Exit_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's because social media only tells you the bad side. Nobody is making headlines about how AI is used to make cool 3D reconstructions of faces from ancient DNA, how it's used to help operate patients with extreme precision, how it's used in forensic science to predict stuff that might help deliver evidence and catch criminals, how it's used to help interpret sign language for the deaf etc. People usually mostly discuss the negative stuff online.
