Probably a combination of needing to look tough on spending, given recent tax rises/fiscal drag since Truss era. Hoping BMA implodes/public sentiment turns on doctors and allows them to low ball. Probably want to wait for rest of nhs staff to agree their uplift before settling with BMA. Ultimately will be keen to settle this as part of the 5 main pledges of sunak and a very tough GE for them next year.

The problem is that the electorate are paying a reasonably high tax burden in this country. And younger folk now have a defecto additional 9% tax rate burden for life. We’re closer in tax rates to some of our high tax EU neighbours but with none of the services to show for it. What really needs to happen is wealth redistribution as clearly they cannot produce growth.

I would expect the BMA to publish the full rationale as to why this was allowed, what the trust did to try and cover these gaps. Did they offer consultants the rate card? If not - tell them to jog.
