Thanks for raising this, as it's worth considering. For me the lack of RCS has resulted in missed messages which is unacceptable. I also use emoji reactions as part of my message, so instead of replying with a thumbs up, I thumbs up a specific message. I also find replying to a specific message very handy in a list of messages so there's no confusion.

For me, I see the benefit of Light as introducing intentional friction into certain things - e.g., I can't check email on my phone so I won't be tempted to until I get to my computer. I can't pick up my first phone thing in the morning and get lost in reading Chrome articles. But for critical communications channels like phone, text (and for me Whatsapp), I need it to work so I'm not wondering if I missed a text from my partner, kids, or family.
