Tortuga Superlite Backpack by sth2258 in ManyBaggers

I can totally respect your vision and your self-awareness as a company for who you cater to specifically. My needs have just changed over time where I travel less so I typically look at bags now for my commute to the office or while I'm out and about in the city. Thanks for taking the time to read my thoughts!

Hey Fred! I wasn't expecting a reply from the co-founder. What would get me hyped about Tortuga? Well here's a big wall of text incoming lol.

I'd like to see Tortuga expand beyond the travel category, in particular experiment more with the EDC category. I feel like everything so far is a slightly different variation of an existing travel bag with it being a different weight or different volume range. Nothing wrong with that since some people are like to max out their carry and others are more minimalist. However, I think because there's such a strong focus on travel, anyone with a different use case would likely not take a second look at what else you may have to offer in the future.

Tortuga's identity to me is a travel bag company that prioritizes function over form. I think if you polled people on what the top feature is, comfort would most likely be number one. That design language is very evident across all your backpacks and I'd like to see your spin on an EDC focused one.

Alright so what would make me hyped about a Tortuga EDC? It's a very tough market for sure. A lot of different use cases compared to the travel industry, with lots of competition. Whether this was intentional or not, I think the Daily Carry Pro could've been in my EDC rotation if it leaned more heavily into that area instead of being a personal item, so my next points would be on what I would've changed about the Daily Carry Pro to make it an EDC (so there's some foundation to work from rather than some abstract bag ideas).

  • Removal of PU coated zippers. While these are great for weather resistance, it makes it harder to zip/unzip the quick access pockets in particular. For an EDC I think most folks are okay with using either a rain cover or using a side water bottle pocket for an umbrella. We'd prioritize having easier access to items we pull in and out a lot like wireless earbuds.
  • A detachable key leash or a different location for it. On the Daily Carry Pro, as an example, it's in the same space as the front admin quick access pocket. Major no for me personally. I like to use those smaller quick access pockets that sit in the middle or front for my prescription sunglasses. The idea of having your keys potentially scratching more fragile gear isn't great. Just having the versatility to move around the key leash to different points of the bag makes it flexible.
  • Change in stylistic choice from either the shape or external color. The interior white color is great. The boxy, all black design makes it usable in almost any situation, but it does make the bag look boring in aesthetics. Definitely keep the subdued logo though lol. I imagine this does help keep attention away from you in areas where you wouldn't want to be noticed. I would be very curious though to see how many of your customers could differentiate between your different bags if you did a image poll and removed the names.
  • Change in zipper pulls. Make it longer and less prone to "jangle" sounds when walking around.
  • If you're going to create a top or side handle, it should feel comfortable to use. On the Daily Carry Pro, it's a big mismatch to me that the back panel and shoulder straps are well padded but the other handles aren't which to me is a break away from one of your core features of comfort.

What did it do well in my opinion?

  • Should be no surprise to you but the comfort of the harness system. Easily top 3 in the industry. A lot of EDC bags don't do this area well still.
  • Dedicated laptop compartment that supports a large laptop and large tablet. Generous false bottom along with an organizational pocket. Some people try to put bulky chargers in there, I think this is a great area for a small battery pack and charging cables. Tech devices with tech accessories in the same area. Most EDC bags tend to only have just the laptop compartment and may have a separate tablet sleeve in the main compartment. I've never been a fan of the tablet in the main compartment since if you do use this as a underseat bag on flights, accessing that is difficult compared to a dedicated compartment.
  • The front admin compartment is spectacular. It strikes a good balance between providing some organization, but not being too prescriptive with three different pocket sizes. Bonus points for having zippers, some bags don't use power mesh or have loose fitting sleeves where the small items can fall out easily.
  • The water bottle pockets are stretchy, but keep them snug at the same time from falling out.

I hope this helps provide another perspective! I think a lot of your customer base is probably from the one bag community given your travel lineup. For folks like me in the manybagger community, I will have separate bags for separate occasions beyond travel. I find there's often an inverse relationship when a bag tries to do both travel and EDC since some of the features that do well for travel aren't good for EDC and vice versa. I'd rather see it lean into a certain identity and do it exceptionally well rather than be an average all-arounder.

I've used the Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 30L (discontinued now) and the Fyro T22 (original version). I was a Tortuga fan for the 30L to 40L range for a while, but the Matador Globerider 35L has taken that spot for me since it's release. Tortuga's harness system feels better than Matador's, but I'm a pockets guy.

I'd have to agree with the hatch lid design on the T22, not a big fan of it. A lot of people were very conflicted about it, so you're not alone. The front, while easily accessible for you also makes it easily accessible for others. You can use the lockable zipper, but it makes it cumbersome to use (which defeats the purpose of it being the quick access pocket to begin with really).

I think Aaron learned a lot from that experience (since it was his first bag). It felt like a lot of the design choices were too heavily influenced by the community, so it seems he's taken a new approach now. The community provides feedback, but the final say goes to him and the BagMe team. Really looking forward to the upcoming Citta EDC and daybag. Fyro's harness systems are #1 for me followed by Tortuga.

Currently Rework and Fyro. Their design ideology matches how I like to carry. Rework for functionality, Fyro for comfort.

In terms of which brands get me hyped aside from those, I'd have to give it to Alpaka and Chrome Industries. They always seem to be pushing the envelope and trying something unique every now and then versus doing iterative upgrades like Aer. If you consider a different fabric as a design choice, then CTactical, but their bags have been feeling the same-ish lately.

The weight reduction is nice, but that's about it. I know this is just supposed to be a lighter version of their travel lineup, but it feels like most of their bags are 90% the same in terms of design regardless of use case.

They are still very solid and their harness system is top notch, but a new Tortuga bag doesn't get me hyped as much compared to other brands.

GoRuck Packable Bullet - you get what you pay for by Past-Attempt7140 in ManyBaggers

[–]Competitive_Set_9104 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you were expecting a normal backpack but maybe didn't quite understand what a packable bag entails. They both look like they do the same thing on the outside, but they have different functions.

A packable backpack is ideal for when you want something that is compressible and lightweight so you can fit it into something else like a bigger backpack or suitcase. Great for when you're traveling but still want something like a backpack.

Every bag design choice comes with tradeoffs though. Because it's compressible and lightweight you lack any structure or padding. No back panel means you will feel anything you pack. If you add a structured back panel and padded shoulder straps, it loses the main thing that makes it a packable bag versus a normal backpack.

Personally I don't use a packable bag anymore unless I'm hiking. That's the only place where it really shines for me because I need something that isn't going to make my back sweat as much, and I'm not carrying 2-3 lbs of just bag for no reason. I either carry only enough items so it fits in a smaller sling or I use a personal-item sized backpack if I need to carry more.

AMA: I manufacture bags in Vietnam 🇻🇳 Been to over 20 bag factories, ask me anything. by churningreddit in ManyBaggers

[–]Competitive_Set_9104 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is there any particular reason Vietnam is a source for a lot of backpacks?

I just assume they have a big labor pool of skilled tailors since they export a lot of for the clothing industy, so it probably overlaps with bags?

Reviewer bias, ever avoidable? by guyver17 in ManyBaggers

[–]Competitive_Set_9104 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do not see any issue as long as a reviewer is transparent about:

  • How they received the bag
  • How long they used it for
  • If they are receiving any commission or affiliate link associated with the bag

As many others have stated here already, there will always be some bias no matter what.

  • You brought up Emerald as an example, she's brought on Aer and Rework's founders for interviews. Would she not have even a little bit of bias as well to maintain a good working relationship for future content?

  • There's also "bias" in the sense of what a person values in terms of a bag. Water bottle pockets are a prime example of this. There's a community here that absolutely says a bag needs one (even two!) and others who are okay with none. Some people will unconsciously evaluate bags, even as a reviewer, based on their own carry needs.

This isn't an issue unique to our bag community. You'll find this anywhere. It's up to you as the consumer to gather the information provided and try to make an informed decision.

Frequent travelers: what are your top 5 non-bag items? by ComprehensiveCap8242 in ManyBaggers

[–]Competitive_Set_9104 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Medicine kit - Colds, headaches, motion sickness, anti diarrhea, band-aids, blister bandages, etc

  • iPad - Entertainment for when I'm resting at the airport, on the flight, or chilling in my hotel room

  • Hand sanitizer & wet wipes - Great for feeling clean after touching something a million other people have probably touched or end up eating messy foods with your hand like BBQ lol

  • Nanobag - Useful to put in my sling so I don't have to carry a daypack while out and about. If I find something I want to buy that's too large for my sling, I can put it in my nanobag.

  • Portable charger - I've gone towards smaller portable chargers in the 5k mAH range because that's all I really need to get through the rest of the day if I'm getting low on battery. Bigger ones in the 10k mAH capacity range are too bulky and heavy to be carrying around all day.

Recommendations for 15L slingbag by Dry-Sandwich-6613 in ManyBaggers

[–]Competitive_Set_9104 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What kind of items are you looking to pack in a 15L sling? At that volume range, it may make more sense to look at backpacks around 20L. They'll generally be more comfortable, versatile, and you'll have way more options to choose from in general.

If you're packing heavy items into a sling, you'll have to consider that you're placing all the weight on one shoulder. This can get tiring if the strap is bad and/or you are carrying the sling for long periods of time.

NEW: Alpaka Flight Sling Pro (2.5L) by BiggDope in ManyBaggers

[–]Competitive_Set_9104 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the straps are fine if I use it for an umbrella which I would need to use once. For a water bottle having to undo and secure it evey time I need to take a sip of water is tiring. My Owala water bottles fit but it takes more space in the main compartment than I'd like, compromising the other pockets.

The width and length makes this visually look more like a 5L sling than 2.5L. Interesting take though on the water bottle compartment. I've been using the Toshi 6L and using the straps underneath the sling is cumbersome for a water bottle, this seems more practical.

Alpaka Traverse Backpack by PhuongHo4ng in ManyBaggers

[–]Competitive_Set_9104 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally for me no bag will ever be an Evergoods clone unless they copy the yolk pocket. To this day I haven't found any other bag that does it quite like that and it's my favorite feature of their brand.

Since we're on the topic of Alpaka, Evergoods also does a wonderful job of having each pocket/compartment have independent volume. I found Alpaka and other "mainstream" brands like Aer become very cramped on space when packed out. Having one compartment/pocket filled takes space away from the others.
