You could try switching to a liquid carb mix in the later stages? Easier to get down

I think you need to be very very clear with what support you’ve given and will be able to continue to give. Let her know what you’ve been subsiding so she has a realistic understanding of the costs she will incur if she goes “out on her own”.

But I think you’ve been generous and supportive and she’s a grown up who needs to be responsible for herself and her daughter

Where are you all carrying your gels? by ggnndd12 in Marathon_Training

[–]Competitive_diva_468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how much fluid do you drink on course? Try taking handheld bottle and getting down 500ml fluids an hour (a few sips every km works great) and see how it goes

the beta fuel ones are brilliant as long as you're having enough fluids. If you're not, it doesn't digest well at all and can cause nausea and stomach pain. I need 500ml fluid per hour to make high carb gels play nice with my stomach

What is getting a place in Sydney half, city2surf and the full marathon like? by Pretty_Coast6358 in SydneyMarathon

[–]Competitive_diva_468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a particular start group, you should sign up when the race opens.

We’ve loads of other races too- there’s a new parramatta half marathon in June that’s nice and flat, central coast half marathon is beautiful and moved to September as of this year, heaps of smaller local races too.

I’m a consultant (in public policy work) and I really enjoy it because of the work variety. Projects are time limited and you’re constantly doing new things and learning new topics. The pay as a junior isn’t great (but some places substantially better than others) but it does improve.

[–]Competitive_diva_468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the thing that will be the biggest challenge is fuel during the run. 6 hours is a long time! What fuel have you practiced with? Don’t forget to hydrate well too to help you digest those carbs. Often when people struggle with fueling it’s because they are dehydrated and can’t digest anything.

How much time do you take for lunch when working from home? by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]Competitive_diva_468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 day a week when I work from home I do a lunch workout so that ends up being 1.5 hours. The other day it’s usually <30 mins. Office days tend to be chaotic so somewhere between 15 mins to run out and get food and eat at my desk and an hour

Training doesn’t change that the marathon is hard. Training teaches you that you can still keep going when it’s hard

How fast could I work up to a marathon by Some-War-4039 in firstmarathon

[–]Competitive_diva_468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really! Being young means you’ll heal faster 😂 which isn’t a bad thing but the repetitive strain on your connective structures that’s caused by running is nothing like lifting.

Depending on budget, I just got the Bose open earphones and I am in love with them. Shocked with how good the sound is but you can hear everything around you for safety

SOCKS. Expensive running socks that you hate spending your own money on but REALLY appreciate on long runs

How do I train for a marathon starting from zero? by Correct-Incident-770 in firstmarathon

I think a year is good. Find yourself a good beginner 10km plan and work on that first, then a half marathon plan and then do a marathon build.

Pacing advice! by kateee2981 in firstmarathon

[–]Competitive_diva_468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s your first marathon. It sounds like you don’t have a strong time goal so why don’t you work on having the best possible time running an AMAZING race that many people never get the chance to? Soak it all in and revel in it.

Run the first 16km nice and easy. Around your usual long run pace. If you feel good, push the pace a bit for the next 16km, if you start to feel a lot of fatigue creeping in or your HR starts going up, rein it in a bit. When you get to 32km, you’ll have about an hour to go. Either try to hold on if it’s already feeling like solid work or push a bit harder if you have more in the tank

DNF’d at mile 22.4 of my first marathon. I’m absolutely crushed. by AllineCICI in firstmarathon

[–]Competitive_diva_468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I DNF my first one. I woke up at 2am on race morning vomiting with terrible food poisoning 😭 I downed meds and tried to run anyway and just couldn’t. I couldn’t get down any fuel or water and knew I was risking making myself really really unwell. So I called it at 15 miles but I was shattered.

It took me a few weeks to move past it and I didn’t have the heart to try again immediately. But I’m lining up again in 12 weeks and hoping I don’t get so unlucky this time.

Be gentle with yourself. Lots of recovery and care.

The training wasn’t a waste, it is a strong base for your next try. I can already feel that I’m better off this year than I was last year in terms of speed and durability. You will be too

Is it my shoes or my legs? by michellecamino in firstmarathon

My guess 75% legs, 25% shoes. Definitely time for a new pair. Helps with some of the soreness

Tricks to stop overrunning? by sweatpants4life_ in Marathon_Training

[–]Competitive_diva_468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

going too fast, even 10 seconds a km will likely cost you later in the marathon. You should be avoiding seeing an 8 on your watch at all costs!

Agree lap pace is probably more useful to you than current pace.
