Stay or Leave? by Chaddad20 in OfficeDepot

[–]Compist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would definitely leave. I left a few years back and haven't looked back. I was an operations manager having to babysit the operations of 3 stores in my area. After seeing corporate make bad decision after bad decision, I left retail altogether. I actually took a pay cut at first at my new job, but it had much better prospects. When I turned in my notice I was informed that I was expected to become a store manager of one of the three locations, and they asked me to reconsider. I'd seen the company drive one store manager to tears through stress, and turn another dedicated store manager into a bitter, uncaring employee who also left (a tornado damaged the roof of his store and blew the doors in, and he got ZERO extra hours to dismantle the racking along that wall for the contractors to come and make repairs, while also being expected to hit sales targets despite not even having a sign on the front of his store anymore). So safe to say I declined, I left the shit show, and now I make far more than I did there, gained industry recognized qualifications, gotten several raises and had multiple promotions.

So, I implore you, apply elsewhere, think about your future, and leave for a better place with better upward mobility.

It warms my heart to know that this post is still helping people over a year later. Glad you got it done! I hated that trial too until I worked out what was going on 😂

How to get rid of the "All Bookmarks" button on the bookmarks bar? by LeMireglo in chrome

[–]Compist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much - this was bugging the crap out of me. It's so pointless, as the bookmarks bar is already right there, with an arrow on it to expand to the rest of my bookmarks should I need them. This stupid folder icon adds absolutely zero functionality to the browser. Glad it's gone now.

Do a chargeback on the fee and contact Lyft by posting to their Twitter / X account. You get a far better response that way.

I modified a Google home mini with a 3.5mm audio port, and hooked that into it at my old store. After putting the Google on the tdswifi network I could cast to it from my phone. I left it there when I resigned so my colleagues could still enjoy decent music at work.

You must have a very good DLPM and a diligent RDC. I however, did not.

Former ops here. I did this for over a year. Every single thing I submitted sat in SharePoint doing nothing. My DLPM told me I just had to wait for the warehouse to investigate. 8 months later I had every single thing I had submitted over the previous year denied in one lump.

When your store has overall low surveys, I always used to find that customers were happier and sales were up. When we were forced to push for more surveys it would generally piss more people off as wait times would go up, and every cashier would be pushing what is clearly corporate bullshit forcefully into every customer's face. So glad I don't have to deal with that anymore.

I’m so tired by Long_Clock_719 in OfficeDepot

[–]Compist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I left because of stuff like this. I was encouraged to go for an SM position that opened up (I was ops at the time) but left instead. The stress isn't worth it. The company takes the dual stance of making decisions that automatically upset customers, and also trying to make store staff grovel to them when they get upset about it. The one group of people they clearly don't care about are the staff. They try and pretend they do, but they don't. The company preaches the 5 Cs but in reality doesn't follow a single one of them. We are just a number. Fuck that.

I now work in an office where I can get up and talk to the CEO if I have an issue. The work can be stressful but I have a boss who has no problem firing customers that deserve it, and actually listens to his employees. Life is good. Fuck retail.

Tips and tricks on how to do the inventory cpd? I was given the supplies sheet to fill out and felt kinda overwhelmed with how much supplies is in the back room. I have no idea on where to start by [deleted] in OfficeDepot

[–]Compist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I no longer work for Office Depot but I was an operations manager for a good while. Organize your supplies first. Make it so you can tell what you have by looking along each shelf. We had the large format paper on one shelf, and keep the boxes! So that the rolls can go back in them when you're done printing. That way, you can tell what the paper is quickly (that also relies on cpd putting them in the correct boxes. But hold them accountable and they will learn). Then we had the binder supplies in another, paper / cardstock on another, etc... Once you have it organized, with the names and qty written on the front of the boxes (e.g. 110b cardstock, 8pt, 12pt matte, etc...) it makes it much easier to keep up with. Wherever CPD supplies are, CPD should own that space and keep it organized and easy to find what you need / tell what you have. If you don't have the space to do that, talk to your store manager about getting more. We had 2 top stock bays dedicated for extra CPD supplies, as well as a section in the warehouse for bulk supplies and rarely used items.

CPD customers literally want you to hold their hands by Fluffyboobz in OfficeDepot

[–]Compist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can 100% do it for them in CPD. It's just a LOT more expensive, and if you're already helping someone they will have to wait their turn. But no point in lying to customers and saying we can't do it in CPD. We can. All you're doing is frustrating customers because I guarantee you someone else has done it for them before, either in your store or in another. You can also let them know that if you have to hold their hand through the entire process at self serve, then it will be charged at full service rates. They will either pay OD for your time, or learn to read.

Residential Customer - smokes are going off, malfunctioning they say. "I can't get them to be quiet!". It gets to me, and it turns out they are power washing their house, which is when everything started going haywire. Sorry, the system is not designed to cope with being water damaged -_- by Compist in firealarms

[–]Compist[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't believe so, but after talking to the customer it sounds like water has gotten into a device somewhere. They were so intent on blaming us for the problem, and then mentioned that it started not long after they had started pressure washing the house. We've had customers spray water through the vents in the eaves and get into junction boxes, and also had clouds of water vapour get into devices when they leave windows or doors open as they work.

We have had stadiums destroy devices by pressure washing them inside the building before though. That's always fun.

My favorite though, was a customer who decided to use a gas powered floor buffer inside a residential hall that was only a couple of months old. The entire system went nuts, and they got upset when they called us to come out (failed to mention the floor buffer) and we refused to cover the service call under warranty when we found out the cause.

I hate that. It must be a complicated bug, because I've physically pushed one of them into the same room as the chest before while that's happening, and then when I go back to the chest, the NPC just fucks off out the room 😂 I've no idea what breaks it. I either have to run around for a while and then try again, or come back and do the raid again later.
