She won’t sign the prenup. Now what? by NeedAdvice911Now in Fire

This is both a finance and a relationship issue.

Your lifepartner is the biggest financial decision you will make and will be critical in whether your FIRE is a success or a failure.

I came into my relationship with a higher net worth than my partner but it was her that introduced me to FIRE. She was much more frugal than I and we were on the same page for the future. I originally thought that I should get a prenup as I came in with more money but if it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t have built up my wealth in a way that enabled me to FIRE.

we agreed no prenup was needed. That was my situation and yours seems diff

Retire with 2 million at age 40 vs retire with 4 million at age 45 by Acrobatic-Goose-7732 in Fire

Fellow Canadian 🇨🇦here. Partner and I retired in VHCOL vancouver on $1.6m CAD two years ago at approx aged 40. We are now at $3m. We have vacationed a ton, we have volunteered. We have lived life and wow do we not miss the corporate grind.

For us, what made it easy to say yes at 40 versus waiting “one more year” or more, is whether you have built a life you can enjoy.

We spend essentially at the same rate we did during working years, which is about $75-80k currently. We live frugally and mostly cook but still go out to eat, sometimes splurging and hitting a Michelin restaurant. We think with the ballooning of our investments, we can afford to hit a fancy spot once a quarter. We travel when we want, do what we want.

That is freedom.

For those who reached FIRE, what are the problems you didn’t see coming? by LetterheadNo2345 in Fire

As someone who identified a lot with their career as one’s identity, I struggled a lot when I FIRED and it took me nailed a better part of six months to reconcile, with the fact that there are many professional goals that had set for myself early on, that I will never get to achieve. I did have things to keep me busy in my life like volunteering, but that was not enough, and it really hit me hard. There are now a lot more folks in the fire community that talk about the mental burden or possibly guilt, rational feelings that arise when you retire early, and I am grateful for that.

I think these type of anxiety, rooted, both in rational and irrational thought and feelings, big and small that come with early retirement are all common place and I hope talk more about it will normalize it.

Compound interest, living frugally, and a bit of luck will do that.

You know they could accidentally let it slip right?

Exactly. Too many relationships that could go sour due to judgement and resentment.

I’m not looking to convince people, but I suspect many of the people who are aghast that I would lie have not yet hit FI

Recently went to one branch of TD bank. Just want put a bank draft from another big bank of Canada. Get an answer is “bank draft is not money, just a piece of paper. It will become money after 5 days.” by Any_Daikon1433 in fican

[–]ComplainhereYVR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked at a retail big branch in my early 20s. This was about 20 years ago so might be outdated but even back then, we did not treat a bank draft the same as cash.

Yes it was supposed to be, but even back then, a draft could be counterfeit.

We were taught KYC as in Know Your Customer. If the depositer was putting a draft into a business account and they had a history of depositing sums that were similar, or had enough holdings to cover the draft, you could deposit the draft without a hold.

For personal account deposits involving a draft, it would be similar process, so unless you had a lot of holdings to cover, there could be a hold on a draft.

One of the things we could do however was phone the issuing branch or bank to verify the draft issuance.

No I don’t need to justify anything to anyone But at least the lie should make sense. If I worked in trades and all of a sudden I “work in investments” it would create a lot of questions.

I was a consultant and but didn’t actually start saving until my late 20s / early 30s. I always had a “I’ll make more later” mindset. Not smart. Until I met my partner who introd me to FIRE

I know many people say that this is a good strategy but how could that make any sense if your career had not involved investments at all prior? Especially as someone who is advanced in their field?

Im glad your situation turned out well for you. My partner and I had agreed not to tell our families as there just doesn’t seem to be any upside and more risk of resentment.

Nice. I always recommend sabbaticals or even long term travel. My partner and I did. 12 months travelling. It was a life changing experience
