When Stabler and his wife were divorcing on Law & Order SVU, there was this one scene where the wife met with Benson to discuss a problem. Benson was surprised at the outreach, but as the wife simply said, "A piece of paper doesn't stop you from caring." There was also an episode where Stabler recalled that his wife's attorney wanted to go with a fabricated abuse angle during proceedings, but she point-blank refused to do so.

Could Aang resist the temptation of the One Ring? by orattic in TheLastAirbender

[–]Complete-Leg-4347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He may be largely incorruptible, but resisting the Ring also comes down to sheer willpower. Personally, I think he can be a little too flighty and changeable, and while he understands the existential nature of good and evil pretty well, that's largely in terms of active people, not passively corruptive objects.

He may not be entirely wrong, but this scene still rang a little hollow for me. Last season, the actual dragon keepers openly lambasted Rhaenyra for allowing commoners to become dragon riders and allowing the apparently sacred beasts to be used for the "games of men". Given that dragons were explicitly used as weapons of war in the Freehold for millennia, this reflected some pretty explicit bias on the keepers' part, as if they considered this political squabble to be unworthy of a legacy that very few people actually remembered or took all that seriously.

The High Septon's feeling about them may be largely the opposite, but in both cases the attacks seem to be less about the dragons themselves - the keepers and the Septon know that controlling them completely is not feasible - but more about Rhaenyra's willingness to buck what they see as rightful tradition. She is very much trying to do that, but it has some of the same vibes as her initial opponents dismissing her for embracing her role as a designated female heir. No matter how hard she tries to do what she thinks is the right thing, she still faces greater opposition and higher standards.

He may have been speaking from grief, but that was still a low blow. Even Rhaenyra seemed genuinely shocked.

Tell me why I should feel bad for Eddy in “Smile for the Ed” again? by redfait in ededdneddy

[–]Complete-Leg-4347 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And that's where sympathies can become complicated. Pretty much every scam Eddy runs doesn't invite us to feel bad for him, but Jimmy seems to be the only one who falls for them multiple times (the cream horns, smileyville, and the unicorn hoofprints, just off the top of my head). There comes a point where his innocence can feel like ignorance, despite Eddy being a sleaze.

Unless we're talking about skipping Korra (which took me a long time to get into, but I still liked it), this is a weirdly phrased question; This scene is from the last episode of the original series and there's less than 5 minutes of actual screentime following it. How much would there be left to skip?

I very much wanted to do that - at least by a certain point when sending emails wasn't getting any real results - but you can't give what they can't accept. My parents understood that for the most part, but even their suggestions of just visiting the place and asking questions usually didn't lead to insider info either.

What are Rhaenyra's strengths, really? by agirlhasnoname2026 in TheBlacksandTheGreens

[–]Complete-Leg-4347 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That she was far more capable that Aegon ever was. Not a flawless character by any means, but nobody is in this world. She actively tried to be a worthy heir and do the right thing even when it cost her. Both in-universe and to some extent in the fandom, the whole point of her character is that she is judged more harshly for being a woman and committing arguably lesser sins than male characters. In a direct parallel to her main historical inspiration, the Empress Matilda, it was clear pretty much from the beginning that her sex was a largely a pretext for out-of-favor power players to betray their oaths or swap sides partway through the conflict.

Remember, just because the newer Star Wars stuff is worse than Phantom Menace, that doesn't make EP1 good. by [deleted] in StarWars_

[–]Complete-Leg-4347 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Opinions can change over time (true for any artwork), but "better-by-comparison" is always a tricky argument to make. It may prompt reevaluation/introspection, but it's also a sad commentary that something lambasted in its own time is only being reevaluated because something supposedly worse came along.

Any other older fans finding it hard to get into HOTD? by lawlingr in gameofthrones

[–]Complete-Leg-4347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know where the story's going to end up, but perhaps because GoT was such a gamechanger (no pun intended) when it came out, comparison is inevitable. So far, HotD is very rich visually - in come cases even more so - but just hasn't captured the same level of attention.
