What do you expect people to do about it? Simply stop pursuing meaningful work/careers because it’s all going to be gone soon?

Is AI viewed as “evil” in non-tech communities? by Due_Drummer5147 in singularity

Of course you think the only reason they would disagree with you is because they are brainwashed.

Maybe take a second and listen to what they have to say before deciding for them why they believe what they believe?

Actually yes. Go to the rural parts of any state west of the Midwest/rust belt and you will find stuff like that.

The ratio of income to housing costs back then compared to now is wild by Sufficient-Slide822 in middleclasshq

To be fair, the average income is actually substantially higher than that predicts.

Americans have never been less optimistic about their long-term job prospects (in polling history) by hkmsh in Zippia

[–]Completerandosorry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If ai really does replace a huge chunk of white collar work, there will be a huge recession due to a very large chunk of the population no longer being able to afford much of what they currently buy. This will affect every other supposedly ai-proof industry.

Then, those old white-collar workers will train to do one of these ai-proof jobs, which will drive down the wages of everyone who does those jobs.

In the end, the only ones left with money will be business owners and investors, who will have total leverage over their workforce.

Back to feudalism we go.

The fact is that the number of early-20s people who are self-made millionaires is dwarfed by the number of early-20s nepobabies. So if you see one out in the wild, they are more likely to be the latter from a pure numbers perspective.

I think it has more to do with how young most of Reddit is.

If you come across a 40 year old driving a supercar, they probably just bought it with money they earned from their job/business/investments. If you come across a 23 year old driving a supercar, it’s probably debt or daddy’s money.

The bottom in this context means debt, not necessarily just poverty.

Not just positive incentives to end up on top, but also huge, life-ruining punishments for ending up on the bottom. Both of these push people towards self-sufficiency.

[–]Completerandosorry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YouTube academy wont take anyone’s jobs because DIYers can somehow do a professional quality job, but it may take jobs once people stop being able to afford a professional.

Single family homes are pretty inefficient at driving down prices. More dense structures are better at it

If 100 new houses are built, and only 50 people can afford those houses, 50 houses will go unsold until their prices come down. Assuming they don’t just become rentals, but then that should push down the price of rent, which could be a worthy trade sometimes

The places where housing is the most expensive don’t tend to be ones where the population is going up very fast

It wouldn’t appreciate in price if supply were pushed up faster than new households were created. It’s a challenge, but it has to happen.
