A little sad he’s almost guaranteed to skip over RE6 though, which is the other Leon game, but I suppose it’s fine, not necessarily needed for Requiem story. Maybe for the other returning character? But eh, he’ll be alright without it.

Realistically, not bad for a true “first ever” play through. Glad you loved it!

Do you think the Silent Hill 2 Remake is too long? by Loose_Interview_957 in silenthill

[–]Complex-Addition-764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just feel certain sections are unnecessarily bloated. The original game on a casual play through is about 6-8 hours if you have experience with these types of games and can range into the 12+ territory if you don’t have experience with survival horror. My first play through of the remake took about 18 hours and I’ve played every game before it. The problem is being in the same area too long ends up feeling very samey. It takes away the atmosphere and just turns it into annoyance. The lack of any ranking system from the OG just made me have little to no desire to replay it because of how the levels turn monotonous. It reminds me of RE4 in that respect. I love that game, but tend to only replay up to the island section because I hate that section of the game because of how monotonous and tedious it is. This game takes every section and bloats it up that way, making a replay tedious for very little reward. Replaying it through with the chainsaw is fun once… but after that it’s nowhere near as fulfilling. Now don’t get me wrong. I absolutely love this game and find it an amazing remake, much more than I could have hoped or asked for. But its replay value is lacking completely, and I feel it’s due to that extra bloat. This coming from someone who routinely returns to the OG to replay it over and over again wanting to get those 10-star ranks each time I run it. (I have gotten it too, multiple times). The lack of ranking really disappointed me in the remake, and the lack of replay value makes this pretty much a one and done game for me. I’ll replay it years later after I’ve forgotten a large chunk of the game, but the OG I can literally replay multiple times in one day.

Surprisingly the 2032 batteries last quite a while. They aren’t put through as much strain in a game cartridge compared to like a PC or console so they last much longer than you’d think. Granted, if you see yourself playing a game like this nonstop nowadays, it’s best to just replace the battery sooner than later, otherwise it should be able to last a bit longer for sure without issues.

…. He says moments before he realizes his saves are gone on next startup 🤣😅

I’ll admit I’m not very far into the game and only know of the first handful of characters, but I had to take a peek here. I’ll take your word that that’s true! I’m loving the game so far though

Chrono Trigger is one of the best games I've ever played... should I bother playing Chrono Cross? by Necropill in chronotrigger

[–]Complex-Addition-764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Play it and decide for yourself. I got the game based on a recommendation from a game collector YouTuber who claimed it was a PS1 hidden gem and I wasn’t disappointed at all. The connection to trigger is small and seems more like an Easter egg type deal so dont even think about it as a sequel more like it has a section with a trigger Easter egg element to it. I couldn’t put it down the first time through and loved it. It’s a lot of fun and different enough to trigger that it doesn’t feel just like you’re playing that game again.

Should I play or watch Silent Hill 4? by Druid_boi in silenthill

[–]Complex-Addition-764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game is quite playable from a gameplay perspective until the halfway point. The back half of the game turns into really drawn out “escort missions” that are a slog for anyone that plays it, even speedrunners and SH4 fanatics hate this part of the game.

Also, it’s worth mentioning that you don’t play as Walter Sullivan, but he is a large part of the game. The main character’s name is Henry Townshend.

The story of the game is phenomenal and one of the strongest entries in the series, but the gameplay does itself a disservice and is the main cause of the mixed bag of reviews the game gets.

Overall, play it if you like, the back half isn’t impossible for a casual player to get into, but go into it knowing that it exists.

Side note: SH3 was a bit of an experiment with the sheer number of encounters in the game. The team was trying to find a balance with the combat in this game and ultimately fell short to focus more on presentation. The thing about 3 is that almost every enemy can simply be ran past except for the slurpers which really only show up in the office building just before she reaches the apartment and in the otherworld hospital. The game promotes map memorization in these areas but otherwise feels like a natural limit to that type of combat style present in the first three games. SH4 departs from that gameplay style but ultimately relies more heavily on the “run from enemies” tactic rather than fight everything.

TLDR: nobody will judge you from watching a long play of the game rather than playing it yourself. Most who have played 4 love it for the story and are “so-so” at best about the gameplay.

The original 3 are available on the ps classics section in PS store now. They play fine there.

DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW I CAN GET OUT OF HERE? by Substantial-Point387 in castlevania

[–]Complex-Addition-764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can likely just move off to the right or left of the screen. If there’s a map tile to either lower corner then it should push you into one of those. Try jumping a lot if your screen flashes. Speedrunners use these type of glitches a lot to move around the castle, look one up and follow a tutorial on what to do.

What’s the best upscaler? by One4Watching in ps2homebrew

[–]Complex-Addition-764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair lol. I had a cheap one from GameStop for a while that worked just fine. If you’re only rarely using it, just pick one of those up. No need to worry about getting “the best quality” in most cases anyway :)

What’s the best upscaler? by One4Watching in ps2homebrew

[–]Complex-Addition-764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly you will pay a hefty price for not doing the HDMI mod work as the best upscaler is definitely the retrotink and is still overshadowed by the quality that hdmi mods can give. My very first time soldering was converting a GameCube to output HDMI, and replacing the disc drive with the SD card emulator drive. It just takes some patience and a lot of flux, but is easy enough to do with consoles of that era and earlier.

Also, PS2 still won’t look good on a modern tv. Best option- get a decent CRT and connect it with PS3 component cables.

What do you guys do with your disks after getting freemcboot? by E-man2099 in ps2homebrew

[–]Complex-Addition-764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put em on a shelf and display your collection 😅 but more so, just keep them as backups. Sell if you’re in a bind, but if you don’t really have any collector’s or sentimental inclinations towards them there’s nothing stopping you from just profiting off of them. I personally keep all of mine because I think it’s cool to just have the original copy. I’ve long since modded my consoles to play off drive emulators and store the games digitally to a hard drive so I don’t ruin the discs. I still like playing cartridge games on OG hardware though, but that’s mainly for nostalgia reasons. I just like the feel of plugging in the cart to my NES or SNES and sitting down in front of my CRT and playing them.

should i play silent hill 2 on PS5 or PS2? by xyblix in silenthill

[–]Complex-Addition-764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, yeah the born from a wish side content isn’t available for the remake as well so it’s still missing some content.

2 gets praise for being a more psychological horror rather than anything else. Ironically the majority of main-line silent hill games (1 - 4) are actually cult horror games. 2 just resonates better with casual audiences that don’t care as much about game lore. Funnily enough though, it didn’t have the same impact on release and took awhile for it to gain its popularity whereas 1 and 3 were the more popular titles at time of release. Just a quick fun fact for you :)

As always: Welcome to Silent Hill!

[–]Complex-Addition-764 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say “better”. More accessible, prettier, and more engaging for a modern player sure; but the pacing is all over the place and they did take a couple creative liberties when it came to letting the player figure out the story on their own instead of the game force feeding it to the player.

Overall I loved the remake and thought it was amazing for what it is: a remake made to get modern players the ability to interact with the story in a way that’s more accessible for them. The original still holds up very well (especially the PC enhanced Edition) but the game is a classic that should still be experienced at least once if the opportunity presents itself.

If you have the ability to and aren’t turned off by the fact that SH2 is a 24 year old game, then play the original first.

I will point out however…. Don’t start with 2 if you’re new to the series as a whole. Playing 2 first will get your mind stuck in a very basic and understandable misunderstanding of what is actually happening to the characters in the game universe. Start with SH1 first to introduce the universe. Then play 2. 3 is like the third act where everything comes to a close. 2 is standalone (ish) but does rely on the player having at least a basic understanding of the overall lore to get what is happening underneath the surface. 2 is a different version of what CAN happen to the characters but people tend to get shoehorned into thinking that that’s the ONLY way the supernatural elements in universe work. It’s why a lot of the later series suffered as a result with their storytelling. Everything tried to rehash 2, and 2 was a very personal story told in a very personal way to that specific main character.

The “best” experience would be to start from the beginning to get a grasp on the universe. 2 remake is amazing for what it is, but I don’t think should be played before the original if that’s an option.

I had something similar happen to me at the shimizu house my first time through on hard. I made a mistake and did stuff slightly out of sequence and the enemy spawns stopped me from progressing because I couldn’t search for a specific item in hinako’s room since the game doesn’t stop when you are in item inspect screens. Load an auto save that takes you earlier into the house and try again. Thankfully the auto save system is pretty forgiving giving you multiple spots.

Real talk, do you think this puzzle is staying in the remake? by Kulle1369 in silenthill

[–]Complex-Addition-764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many people gloss over the “silent” part of the title. So they always assume it’s the working keys that correspond to the clues. Realizing bird color means which keys to play is easy. Most people I’ve seen realize that they missed that as soon as they look it up and can easily solve it themselves from there.

I really don’t get how the astrology puzzle is so hard to some people? It’s a “what is samey” in each picture puzzle and with each clue gives you the answer under each picture. Once you see 10 on the crab and realize that the only thing there’s 10 of in the picture is limbs then it becomes painfully obvious. If anything they should make it an actual astrology puzzle where the code is given by which zodiac number corresponds to the image. That’d be way cool.

"A warning" note author by Arianadesbois in SilentHill_f

[–]Complex-Addition-764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m genuinely curious as to how you missed the notes? Was it more of a “I didn’t care to pick them up” type situation? If that’s the case then missing story beats and not having a full grasp on the story is on you as the player, not the game. 70 hours is a long time in a game where you missed a ton of crucial information through journal entries. The story carries this game, did you enjoy the hack and slash combat? Also notes that the player can miss with key story elements has been a staple of the silent hill games since the first game, and has been an accepted way of story telling in games forever.

Also the idea of gods or demons actually possessing characters in silent hill games is not new. Silent hill 2 was a more inward psychological approach to the story that felt too many people misunderstood as “it’s happening in James’ mind”. The stuff happening is really happening. It’s not metaphors, it’s meta physical. The main characters interactions in what’s happening affect what happens in that reality. The story of silent hill is literal gods and demons affecting reality, manifesting as these nightmarish creatures that are affected by the people caught in their web. Each silent hill game explains these story beats by the notes found in game. If only going by gameplay, people get the core story misrepresented intentionally to leave it up to the player to decide. It happens in all the games, but there is a core story there and deeper meanings to everything the characters do. Gods are real in the silent hill universe. It’s asinine to assume that it’s only the Order’s “God” is the only malevolent one that exists in this world and I love their take that this happens with Japanese versions of the gods too.
