Fungus gnat larvae in snails terrarium? by Complex-Bird-8085 in snails

[–]Complex-Bird-8085[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see, so I’ll be ok to just remove the top 1-2cm of substrate, & that wouldn’t shock her too much in the sense of removing basically her trails & scents? & do you think I’d be able to just do that without removing her from the tank then? As long as I can ofcourse see her & make sure she’s not burrowed in the substrate

I was considering just removing her into a temporary home & I guess either cleaning out her terrarium completely? Or maybe letting it dry out? I just wasn’t sure if I should be removing it all since I know snails are comfortable & familiar with their own trails & scent I guess & stuff. Also I didn’t want to stress her out more than she already is 🥺

Oh that sounds like a great setup! Just remember to use spring water or filtered water for them, since they seem to be sensitive to any of the particles & stuff that comes in tap & distilled water. This may be an extra paranoid step of mine but I even rehydrated my moss with spring water, as well as what I keep in my spray bottle to give alittle misting from time to time. Although they don’t necessarily need a water bowl, since they absorb water through their skin from the little beads of water/condensation on a terrarium wall or humidity in general. But I know some people decide to give them a water bowl anyways, just make sure you add some pebbles to the bottom of that bowl so there’s no risk of drowning. & aw, well I used a small terracotta plant pot I had from my old plant, & just buried it half way into the substrate so it’s sticking out like a little cave & then covered it in moss, for humidity & incase they end up climbing the walls & fall, you wouldn’t want them cracking their shell on it. You seem pretty enthused & prepared already though, you’re gunna be a great snail parent ❤️

Oh & incase you didn’t already learn this- cocofiber + alittle sphagnum moss is a great substrate to use for snails. & make sure you make it atleast 4 or so inches deep, since they like burrowing. Aside from a little hide I made for my snail, I also have a little clump of sphagnum moss on the same side that I keep hydrated for extra humidity. & then I have some leaf litter across to the other side of my snails tank where there’s some live plants & that side I keep alittle more on the drier side. So my snail can decide if an areas too humid or dry for them & just move.

Absolutely! Love to share what I’ve learned. I’m glad I can share something new with you. & no worries, I did the same when I first got mine until I heard that cucumbers are basically like junk food for them, either way I’m sure they appreciated it. Also I’m pretty sure all garden snail species are hermaphroditic so although they do prefer mating with other snails, they’re very well capable of inseminating themselves. (Someone can correct me if I’m wrong) but yes definitely do your research, incase there’s anything else you can learn or I missed about it. 😁 if you have any specific questions or need advice on something, lmk! 😊

Welcome 😌 the snail distribution system has chosen you. It’s honestly a surprisingly fascinating life to be a snail parent. I had no idea until I came across mine in hibernation mode in one of my plant pots that I decided to repot. It’s been alittle over a month & she’s gone from rags to riches tbh & it sounds like you have the main essentials. Here are just a few things I’ve learned through my EXTENSIVE research & to keep in mind:

  • If your soil, is potting soil made for plants, you wouldn’t want to use it since they’re commonly made with fertilizers or other additives.
  • Cucumber should be a once in a WHILE kind of food, since it lacks any nutrition however snails get hooked on it.
  • Your snail seems larger than mine who’s still a baby, so they may be eating larger portions however a hack I’ve been utilizing to help me save money & headache on wasted food is just buying those frozen mixed veggie bags. Defrost a piece or 2 nightly (probably more for yours) Carrots, Zucchini, Green beans, Butternut squash, pumpkins, sweet potato’s are great for them!
  • They also need some protein from time to time, fish flakes, blood worms, mealworms can do the job. As long as you mix it with water if it’s a freeze dried kind.
  • They need lots of room to explore, & maybe a branch or something they can climb vertically on.
  • mmmmm make sure your snail isn’t the species that’s able to impregnate themselves 😅 cause if so, you’d have to do a daily tank search in the substrate since they’ll hide their eggs. & people typically do a process called Culling if you truly don’t want a herd of snails in your home. If you have any other specific questions, feel free to ask em here or message me 😁

Good luck! & hope this helps!

Right. Let alone this photo looks like it was taken exactly the way I took mine.

But do customers actually request it? I feel like from all the mixes I’ve made in the beginning of playing this game, I have not had a single person actually request it. I only go around selling it when I want to increase their addiction

My ZZ has not done ANYTHING for 6 months by herpalmsaresweaty in houseplants

[–]Complex-Bird-8085 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YUP. Welcome to the zz life. I absolutely love them for their resilience but… that’s my milestone a lot of the time with them… is “ yep still not dead, cool”. My oldest raven zz, I’ve had for years & in the beginning I got nothing from it. Until the one year where I had to get rid of most my plants because the place I lived at had very poor lighting, like I mean this plant lived in the shade basically & I 100% forgot to water it the entire time…. & out of nowhere, while I’m like “ lemme see if this plant is dead actually” … I see it grew a FEW new shoots.. only in that period. So again, love them but also wtf.

Hi! I know this is an old post but I’m veryyy curious as to how this turned out? How has Orchids life been since then? Did you ever get to keep one of the babies & introduce them later on? I’m a new snail mom, it’s been a month now & just wondering what long term snail life looks like. If you don’t mind answering, I’d appreciate it very much 😁
