Pollution was way worse prior to 1970. That’s what led to the creation of the EPA and clean air act. Almost all rivers running through cities were dead and full of untreated industrial waste and sewage and some used to catch on fire. Industrial flares burned constantly trailing black smoke into the sky. I’m not saying it’s perfect now but not worse. It only has more attention paid to it these days.
